Couple's retrospective is more video than photos... Can't Post

I knew it would start happening - I just got my first "photo montage" materials that is more home video than pictures. Both families had video cameras when the bride and groom were growing up and want to incorporate that more than pictures. I have told them that I didn't know how much more time it would take as compared to just pictures so I couldn't determine a cost difference. They gave me 8 VHS tapes with a log sheet of where the shots are they want me to use. Any one have experience with this situation?

I had one of my past brides that wanted to do a video montage of all the footage they shot of their twins girls (10-12 MiniDV tapes), which would then be shown at their 2nd birthday party. I too wasn't sure what I would charge, because I didn't know how long it would take. Like you, I had them screen the footage beforehand and write down the clips they wanted to use.

The trouble was that the time code would always change because they had gaps in the MiniDV footage, so 9:07 might show up a few times on the same tape. After figuring out that it was going to be too big a project, I simply bailed on it. Hated to do so, but it was back when I was buried under a huge wedding backlog, and I just didn't have the time to handle it.

I have this situation all the time!
I insist on the client being present when we transfer the clips,
and they know ahead of time it is going to run $45 per clip (which includes the transfer and edit of the clip).

I do those quite often also, my latest was shown yesterday at a wedding reception as a growing up video/photo montage and SDE. It's 8 minutes long. The brides mother just handed me the tapes and told me to use what I wanted to use.

You can see it here: www.heirloomvideography.net - it's the first one in the galleries sections. If you feel you should comment on it, please send a PM as I know the quality is not worthy of an award, but the B and G and the guests loved it - that's all that matters :)

I charge $40 a minute of home video used in a photo montage.

While a small amount of decently shot home movies used strategically can add value to a photo montage it's one of those a little bit goes a long way things.

I originally looked at it as a minute would equal about twelve photos plus transitions and set the charge accordingly which I have found also keeps the amount of footage within realistic levels.

I tell them to notate timecodes, describe the desired scenes and their reason for inclusion and to have the tape parked at a point twenty seconds or so prior to the first desired clip in each tape.

David, that's great advice... Can we ask what you charge per photo as well? I know how much I charge per photo and if I can compare it to what you charge per photo then I can really figure out what my comparative price for video clips would be! :)

Yes..it is happening more and more. I give them a "per hour of tape" rate.

If they cue it up..that may be a little easier and you may give them a break in price but its still a hassle but the product is a little more rich and emotional with the video mixed in.
