DVD - how much footage fits & compression Can't Post

I was wondering... I have been using Premiere 6.5 to edit and Adobe MPEG encoder to to compress to dvd format. (Sonic DVDit to print DVD). My questions are, how many minutes should I be able to fit on a DVD and what are some of the settings you guys are using to acheive 1) best quality and 2) most minutes?
I have been able to fit approx 1 hour and 20 minutes using a 50 for video encoder quality (max) and a 5Mbps. Does this sound right or are there tweeks that should allow me to fit more footage on a DVD?
Thanks ahead of time to all who can help.

That sounds about right. Many people limit their DVD-Rs to 1 hour to keep quality high, but I've gone up to 1 1/2 hours without too big a hit.
One thing you can do to squeeze more onto a disk is to encode the audio as AC-3, which takes up much less space than a WAV file. However, you need the proper encoder, and your authoring software must recognize that audio format.
You can also try variable compression, rather than constant bitrate.

I've done two hours. Did it for a Graduation video. And using Vegas and DVD Architect, it looks awesome. I dont think you would notice if it was compressed less.
That was using AC-3 audio.
Max bit rate was around 5.00
I was very very surprised with the quality.

I also use Vegas+DVD Architect. A week ago, I decided to do a freebie, 2 hours and 5 min on 1 DVD. The quality was much better than I thought it would be. Others said the same. However, when I looked close, I could see occassional artifacts. I encoded Mpeg2 and AC3 Audio in Vegas, made many pages of Menus and animated thumbnails, and moving backgrounds. Ended up at about 4.6 Varible Bit Rate. Checking the bit rate indicator on the player, showed that it went as high as 6,(seldom) and as low as 3.5 at times, but mostly stayed around 4-5.
The good thing about this freebie was that they called the next day, said it was a great video, and ordered 7 more DVDs. I copied to DVD-R and DVD+R.
