I've already designated Dave to be my assistant to carry my tripod bags and dollies.

You better be nice if you want him to keep referring you.

Yes! Dave has referred a few clients to me and the usual reaction is that they see what I have to offer, they look at my prices and then they tell me I don't value my time and they have no respect for me and they hang up right in my ear. So I think I can get by without his referrals. Wink

Why don't you do like I do and just tell them "no" when they ask about raw footage.

I did that once but felt the way I handled it wasn't right, plus I picked up a sales tip somewhere that any "no" answer should be accompanied by an alternative. Since then I've tried to find out why people are asking for raw footage, because that can be a chore to watch. I'm happy to give people lots of minimally edited footage but not the original raw footage, so that's the direction I try to steer potential customers.

That was completely off base, Bruce. I pay my sister. LOL

That's how he's going to undercut you. Now you'll have to make her work for free to keep up.

If another videographer came up to you and gave you some crazy theory as to why your price structure was ruining his business, would you care at all? Or would you care about feeding yourl ovely wife and beautiful children first?

The way I see it... The first one to the dumpster for dinner loses, the one who sends him there wins. Cool

.....I seriously doubt Dave goes through a whole day and even has one thought about me and how I am affecting his business. We're going after 2 completely different demographics...

LaughLaughLaugh That's my thoughts. I've had the local video big-shot email me, blaming me for him not being able to charge more for his videos, saying that I need to raise my prices. What a complete ignorance of how the free market economy works. Laugh If I'm stealing your customers because I charge $799, and you charge 5 times more than me, it simply means your product SUCKS BALLS for the price compared to mine. I'll gladly undercut my video buddies if it means I can pay the rent and get some food. It's called capitalism...and hunger. Cool

Customers pay you exactly what you're worth, when you do this as a full time business.

It's also a matter of supply and demand. My children occasionally demand food, so I must supply it to them.

I don't like to sell raw footage for many of the reason mentioned here. If they ask about it I mark that on the contract and when editing I make sure I leave in all of the chicken dance and everything else. I make it as long as possible for the raw footage people.

Hell, that's the shining piece of my final edit - followed by the hokey-pokey. SlySly

When I sell it, I just chuck all the original tapes into a bag and seal it. I'm not even sure I rewind them. And I've always wondered how long they watch the 80 minute balcony cam before they realize it ain't movin'. Wink
