Edius Anyone Can't Post

Anyone heard anything good or bad about Canopus' new editing software that is shipping in May? Have any of you ordered it, or are you planning to???
It looks sweet, but it's scary to jump on a new program that no one has used before. The intro price is right!

Re: Edius Anyone Can't Post

Hi Rick,
I think I'm going to wait until other editors buy it and give their reviews, especially on the Canopus Forum where it looks like lots of editors have already pre-ordered theirs.

Of course you know you must have a Storm card to run it and Windows XP is the only thing certified at this moment. I sure hope they soon release a laptop solution. I love Storm Edit but it can't do mulitiple cameras and I hate having to use Premiere for that.

Re: Edius Anyone [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey Colman,
We always shoot 2 cameras, use minidiscs and I edit everything in Canopus Storm2.
I can't stand Premiere either and only use it to seperate audio sometimes and on rare occations for fast motion.
Are you aware that you can put Cam2 on the AV Insert and use Lumakey filter to disolve back and forth? If you click the enable button under lumakey settings (in/out) it will dissolve. If you want to dip to color use blend effects to go out to black (solid color). Another trick to seperate audio is to put the clip with the audio you want to keep on AV track, use P in P and make the image transparency 0. This keeps the audio up and hides the image completely.
If you want to see both angles while editing use a small P in P box on AV track and then turn it off later before copying it out.
I'm sure you may be aware of these and may not want to bother with it but I find it much better than dealing with Premiere.
I can't wait for Edius to eliminate some of these annoying steps.

Yeah but I use three cameras.
One of my systems is getting upgraded to Storm 2 tomorrow! Do you ever use the white balance in Storm 2 and have you found it helpful?

Re: Edius Anyone [In reply to] Can't Post

I can see where 3 cams can be tough to edit. You have to get more creative there.
The 'white balance' is worth the upgrade alone.
I had to download an additional patch (from Canopus site) that allowed me to adjust the white and black seperately instead of just using auto.
This white balance is AWESOME. We used mixed cameras Sony/Canon and it really works! It enhances the blacks and whites without altering flesh tones. You can tweek it also if you want a little more red or whatever.
It does effect real-time playback if used with multiple filters. We have to copy it out as a seperate .AVI and then bring it back in.
No more green slow-motion and softfocus!

Looks like a decent product. Without getting into the "my NLE is better than yours" mentality, it kinda looks like Canopus made another version of Vegas.

I use the white balance filter very often. Even if a shot doesn't look like it needs it, use the manual pickers and see what a difference it makes. The waveform monitor and vectorscope really help out as well.
Between than and the color correction filter (which also have the scopes), you can do some amazing things.
I am also awaiting the new Edius package. Some of the features are very cool...

Re: Vectorscopes [In reply to] Can't Post

While we're talking about the vectorscopes, can anyone point me to something that tells me, in plain English, how to use 'em? I've read the Storm manuals, I've read other stuff on the web but it just hasn't 'clicked' yet.
And a little more on topic, I'll be getting Edius the day it's released. Can't wait to get away from Premiere...

Re: Vectorscopes [In reply to] Can't Post

I just kind of figured the vectorscopes out, so I'm no expert on the subject. I do understand a great deal about color theory, so that might have helped out a bit.
Do people here really hate Premiere that much? I actually think it's great for what it does. I have been able to do what I wanted to do with it. Since I got the DVStorm2, I have actually used Premiere exclusively, and didn't need to use After Effects up until the current project I have (not a wedding).
But I will admit, Edius looks far superior, and I have the hardware to support it so I am definately going to explore that avenue!

I use Premiere exclusively and love it. Once the learning curve is over and you learn a few tricks and shortcuts it is pretty quick and agile (in my opinion). Since I am not in a position to switch editing platforms with my season about to kick off I will remain a happy user. Perhaps I will look into something elso in the offseason or when I upgrade my entire system next time. If you read some Premiere forums and get tips and tricks from other users it is pretty quick to do lots of stuff.
Still happy with Premiere (for now)

Re: Premiere vs Edius (and others) [In reply to] Can't Post

I think maybe I got spoiled by starting out editing with Vegas Video. Then you come to Premiere and suddenly you can only put transitions between clips on one track, then you look for the master audio bus so you can just drop a compressor/limiter over the entire stereo mix, then it chokes on the WMV file you want to insert in the corner of the main video, then it crashes or randomly renders parts of my photo montage as solid black, or... well the list goes on.
I'd estimate that I spend 25% of my editing time working around Premiere issues rather than editing but it's my only real option if I want to use the DVStorm2 card in my computer.
To me, Edius looks to have a lot of the features I miss about Vegas while still letting me do everything in real-time. It's my Storm cards last chance to stay off the scrap heap as, if I don't like Edius, I have a feeling I'll be heading back to Vegas Video as my editing tool of choice.
