First wedding EX1 Can't Post

I shot my first wedding yesterday using our EX1 and was amazed at the low light ability. Very dimly lit reception hall, no on camera light, no gain...amazing footage of first dance using Glidecam X-10. Settings, 1080i/35 mbps, no grain, no artifacts. I truely hope that more clients will opt for an HD wedding shoot so that I will use this camera more regularly for this type of work. The 1/2" sensors clearly show the double size difference vs the 1/3" of our Z1U and DVX100s in the same conditions. I will highly reccomend the EX1 to anyone who is considering an HD purchase.
Best, Craig

Could you post some stills or maybe a short clip?

Craig did you have any "rolling shutter issues". I shot a birthday party the other day and I saw some "issues" but they are certainly not noticeable unless you scrub frame by frame. I am concerned about an abundance of flashes.

I viewed the footage last evening on a sony 46inch Bravia in 1080i and while there wer many flashes going off, I did not notice any objectionable issues regarding the rolling shutter. In fact the footage seemed quite fluid like. One thing I did notice was the absolute lack of motion artifacts with the EX1 as opposed to that which I experience with the Z1U in HDV when used with the Smooth Shooter. That being, the compression needed and hit encountered when the entire image is changing on a frame by frame basis as opposed to a lock down shot with just the subject moving.
I will post a grab tomorrow but can't post a video clip as the groom was a celebrity and I can't show any faces.

Hi Craig, Did you capture the wedding in HQ 1080 60i or HQ 1080 30P. Second question is what platform did you edit with?

Thanks,

Lou K.

Hi Lou, The footage was shot in 1080i so I could easily intercut with other interlaced footage. I was intending to use this footage for test purposes only as I had 2 other cameras (DVX100's +3db gain) in SD on sticks covering the formal dances as well. When I saw how good the footage from the EX1 was, I will now intercut that, down-rezed in FCP6 with the SD footage.
I do have several HD weddings coming up in the months ahead which I will shoot with the EX1 and our Z1U. Again, in 1080i.
I'll post a still from the shoot later today.
Best, Craig

Hey Craig, Were you using the HQ 1080i setting or Sp 1080i setting. Whenever I shot in HQ 1080i I would then have to convert the footage to Progressive scan MPEG2 for the DVD.

Cheers,

Hi Lou, This is a grab from the clip. Note very low noise in picture. The light was very, very low...hence the flatness. They wanted no additional lights.

FCP6 doesn't seem to have any problems with the conversion going to SD DVD.

Looks Nice in Low light. When I was in Philly about a month ago, at a dark reception I noticed that the footage from the EX1 looked much better than the Canon A1.

Since you aren't showing any faces you could at least tell us who it is. Don't leave us hanging the way Chris Jones did.

Lou, one more thing...I did not use the Sony WA adapter as it is a bit heavy, but I have balanced it fine on the Gildecam, so I know that it works. It does require using the larger Sony battery for counter balance, so the entire weight goes up all the way around. It's a fine lens, and I will use it for it's zoom through abilities on sticjks or hand held.
I am getting the .06x Schneider WA when it comes out in early April for use with the Glidecam. It is much lighter.
So actually, that is why this footage was slated to be test footage because there was no room to move away from the bride and groom other than what is shown in the pix.
Best, Craig

do mean 0db gain?
no light with a dark reception?
id love to see the footage. i thought all cams need some light. maybe your receptions aren't as dark ours in NY. can you post clips, i gotta see it to belive it. i shot 6db with on camera light and side light assistant, i think i can go to 3db but odb might be too low plus i would definelty need the light regardless.
