French Flag attachment Can't Post

Most of my weddings are on the beach with very bright sun. I found that a French Flag really helps cut down the wash out of color in the lens from glare.
I really didn't want to lug a matte box around when all I really needed was the top flag so I added this one to my Z1U and EX1. It also works well on our DVX 100s and really any rigid sunshade that has a flat top mounting surface.

Of course a circular polarizer doesn't hurt either.

Hi, Craig.

I've been looking for a reasonably-priced french flag.

How is that shoe attached to the hood?

And is the flag designed to be attached to a shoe?
Or is that some type of mod you made?

Glad you liked it Lou....works great.
Brackish...there were no modifications made to the flag other that one flag/shoe was a snug fit into the shoe. I'm not certain if the shoe specs were off or the flag. I'm taking about a paint thinkness off so i just filed the flag shoe attchement down a few hundred thousandths. Yes, the flag is made for a standard shoe mount. The Lindhal shoe was attached to the sun shade with ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate, which is typically sold under trademarks Superglue and Krazy Glue. The reason I chose super glue over epoxy was beacuse both surfaces were absloutely smooth hence yielding the best possible bond. You could also use high tack double-sided tape.
Note: when you mount the shoe, fold the flag completely closed over the sun shade to locate the proper position for the shoe, front to back. This way you can fully close the flag over the shade when not in use.
Dominic...The flag and support are aluminum construction as is the shoe attachment. Yes,there is always cardboard or black wrap, but we have quite a bit of wind here and that wasn't an option.
Hope this helps, Craig

Hi Craig,

Very clever design.

Most of the French flags I've used have a clamp that clamps to the handle and then an articulated and adjustable arm that holds the flag. More pieces to design and build and more expense. Yours is simpler.

I might consider screwing your bracket to the matt box rather than gluing it.

Good job and thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the compliment Hal. It does the trick for a resonable price.

Hey Craig, Just got those french flags from India. Can't wait to test them out. Also that Matthews M25 Tripod you recommended is awesome.

Thanks,

Lou, I'd be curious to hear how they go for you. Are they made
of metal or plastic?

Hey Brack, There made of aluminum. They're painted black and look goog. All I gotta get now is the cold shoe attachments at B&H.

Exactly! They are made out of aluminum not plastic like some. They are also coming out with a new mattebox made for the EX1 and other 16:9 cameras. Their quality is very good and shipping is very fast as you can see. So far they are working very well on the EX1 and Z1U as mounted.
