I'll show you mine	Can't Post

I'm sure this has come up before, but I never thought of it until I saw a recent post. Are there some people that post here and don't show their work here or even give us a link to their website?
I guess if the discussion is only about gear or business that wouldn't matter too much but when the conversation turns to aesthetics, it seems that if you are willing to engage in that kind of dialogue, you should be willing to show your work. I even think work in progress is helpful to discuss.

If I were king of the forums here is what I think we should do: We should all post at least one full wedding video to someplace like vimeo.com where we would all be able to check out, comment on and learn from each others work. I think a full video would be more helpful than just a trailer or highlight. Although, I enjoy watching those as well.
Those people worried about others stealing their ideas would have to "get over themselves". That may be an oversimpification of what might be a reasonable business practice. I understand that but if Jones, Watson, Aubert and Elliot can post their work, then we all can.

The other half of that deal is that we should find time (me included), to watch others work or at least some of it, and take the time to give feedback. There are people who already regularly do that. I feel guilty that I am not one who actively does. I am trying to work on that.

I hope I don't come across as either whiny or condescending. I have tons of respect for the people here. There are a lot of very kind and talented people that have helped me a lot. I am very grateful.

What are your thoughts?

Hey Bill speaking of which I'm getting ready to post my first FULL edit for the forum public to see. It's my first "true" short-form wedding with a total run time of 24 minutes.

I'm not sure if I'll post it pre or post CC though. Not sure that it matters really so long as people understand the reason the colors aren't optimal in the non-CC'd version.

Hi Glen,
I can't wait to see it. When do you think you will post it. I would think you would be fine to post it pre-CC. People have been OK about it when I've posted work in progress.

Possibly sunday night. If so it'll definitely be pre-CC. It's not really a documentary edit per-say. It's more of a hybrid 60/40 with the majority being more cinematic.

PS I look forward to seeing your edit as well. Always an inspiration to me.

Thanks Dave.

I have never seen a non-wedding event video and have had people ask me about doing them. I like the way you approached this video. It has great energy and emotion. More than I would think a birthday party would have.
Was that the final product the client received?

I can't get a full clip uploaded to vimeo. They have a weekly file limit of 500mb and this one is 425mb.............. Mad

Thanks! I CC basically when I feel like it. Sometimes I'm editing a certain section and having it not CC'd annoys me so I'll stop and do it right then. Other times I'll blaze through an edit and won't CC until the end.

Interesting. I color correct the master clips before I start chopping them up so the CC is consistent through most of it.

Do you do each clip with a different CC or do you do one clip and then copy and paste onto the rest?

I do that for corporate production where I have complete control of the lighting. For weddings, however, we're such run and gun and the lighting situation is always changing that I wouldn't feel comfortable laying down a CC over all the footage. I copy and paste a CC over multiple clips if they are from the same lighting situation, otherwise I adjust each clip. For instance, all the footage from the first dance is from the same lighting so I'll probably use the same CC on all those clips. Same thing for the ceremony. When you get into outdoor footage, or even indoors like a bridal prep I don't usually do that. The lighting in those situations is always changing.

Here is a recent film in it's entirety. It's about an hour long so I understand if you can't screen it in one sitting. It's not quite as romantic as some that I have done but I think it's a nice story. I really enjoyed working on it.

Hey bill,

I watched the video you posted last night and this is what I thought:

I felt that the editing was very good, well cut and fantastic use of audio. As always, you do a good job telling the story of the family and couple. Where I think it fell short was in the length. I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but it was hard to watch the full hour. Not because the editing was bad or the shot selection was poor, but it felt like it took forever to get going. If I remember correctly, it was about 30 minutes in when you finally got to the ceremony. I feel like you should really cut that down to about 10 or 15 minutes in. Of course this presents problems with telling the story but I really think you could shorten the entire edit by at least 15 minutes. While there is no doubt in my mind that the family totally loved that video, as an outsider it was difficult to stay focused. This is actually something I have been struggling with. As an artist I want to make the best videos possible. However, there are a lot of shots and audio that I leave in the edit that are not very artistic but instead mean something to the client and the client alone. I think it's a fine balance we have to walk. Providing a very well edited and cutting edge video but at the same time leaving in things that he client will truly cherish even if they may not make sense or be watchable to others.

BTW, that bride looks like a totally different person during her interview than on her wedding day. I want to say its the hair style. Very interesting.

Seriously, Thanks so much for watching it. It's never easy finding that much time to watch someone else's work. I appreciate your taking the time.
As a general rule, I usually try to get the bride down the aisle within 10 or 15 minutes. But, because this was a Jewish wedding I didn't want to structure it that way. The signing of the contract and the veil lifting part were very important so I held off on the chuppah part of it.
It was definitely slower and less romantic than my other ones.
That being said, I am still comfortable with a relatively slow-to-evolve structure because I keep in mind that the audience is the family and they will watch a little more patiently and would like to see more. If I were to broadcast this piece, I probably would get it down to a 30.
It's something I struggle with all the time. Along with the fact that the stories may not always be all that compelling to outsiders but to the family and future generations it probably would be.

Sorry for the delay in getting my full edit up. I just stopped by a friends house to borrow a PD-170 to use as a pass-though device out to my production monitor. I sold all my SD equipment and found I had no way to get the video out to external monitor because of it. lol

Plan on doing the CC'ing tonight and hopefully the encode + upload & post tonight, if not by tomorrow night.

I still have yet to watch your edit but I plan on watching it today.

There used to be a lot of clip posting on these boards. Guess people lost interest in montages and viewing them.
I also mailed out quite a few full DVDs for free to anyone that asked us and picked up the postage. After a few people didn't even acknowledge that they received it with a quick simple note like "thanks...I got it" ... I stopped bothering.
