Are there some people that post here and don't show their work here or even give us a link to their website?

There used to be a lot of clip posting on these boards. Guess people lost interest in montages and viewing them.
I also mailed out quite a few full DVDs for free to anyone that asked us and picked up the postage. After a few people didn't even acknowledge that they received it with a quick simple note like "thanks...I got it" ... I stopped bothering.

Brian as a general rule of thumb I've found that's how most clients are. Heck, even when they recieve their OWN video it's a toss up whether they contact you to thank you or not even when they are estatic about it. I wouldn't take it personally or use it as a reason to stop sending videos out.

To me even if they don't ultimately book me, my work is circulating out there. I've even considered making 2 versions of each wedding this season. One I deliver to the client and one that is a duplicate but has my web address and phone number cylcling occasionally at the bottom of the screen during the length of the program.

Re: [Jenn M] I'll show you mine [In reply to] Can't Post

Brian,

Thanks for your honest answer, I suspected that that might be one of the reasons people don't post, but you voiced it well.

I understand how that can be frustrating. I have run into that as well on the boards and, as Glen said, with clients also.
I understand that people are just busy.

I think that the thing is now it's just so easy to throw something on vimeo.com, that it's worth it to me to give it a shot even if only one person sees it.
My video has had 37 views since I posted it and only one comment. I attribute that to the fact that people may be too busy or even just didn't like it and would prefer to not hurt anybody's feelings.
Either way, it's fine with me. I'm thick-skinned and at least I made an impression and maybe did my part.
Thanks for the post.

Bill

Darrell fantastic work. Great use of audio voiceovers.

And of course fantastic Blidecam work. I really loved the Glidecam shot walking along side the car while the bride rode away. Great use of the limo to create a sense of movement.

Loved it.

Thanks Michael! Yeah the shot with the bride sitting in the vehicle could have gone 2 different ways. I was debating jumping in the car like the photographer did but I decided to get a shot from the outside. I liked how it turned out.

Darrell,

I also like the way you included the natural, ambient audio throughout the edit. Just the right mix of music and voices. Your camera work is so smooth and doesn't draw attention to itself. Instead my attention was on the subject(s)...what's in the frame, not how the frame was gliding around.

I hope that makes sense. Great work.

I am glad you didn't jump in the car. I thought that ruined what was an awesome shot. Photog could have got that shot while that car was standing still.

Seriously though, great work Darrell.

So far Darrell and Dave have stepped up. Glen's is on the way.

Thanks Bill! I'm glad you described how you watched the video, that's exactly what I am trying to do with my editing. Glad you liked it!

Re: [billgaff] I'll show you mine [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Bill,

I watched your full one hour sample yesterday inbetween editing. It was really hard to tear myself away from watching it. I have to say that I really enjoyed it ALOT. Actually I really thought it could even go onto TV as a documentry about Jewish weddings. I disagree with Darrell with shortening it down.. well it could be done but like you said this was not a typical wedding it had so many important Jewish customs that were important to catch and the way in which you put it together it was truly very well done. I loved the interviews throughout the whole thing and this really told the story and supports your business name "humanstory" and your slogan about how you only tell true stories. I'm guessing you did these interviews after the event? Was it an additional charge onto their package or do you just do this for all your weddings? Did you set out the questions to ask?

The music you used was perfect and incorporating the natural ambient music with interviews over the top was definately a huge part of me loving it. I actually loved the music selection better than well known songs that require a licence to use which surprised me and has definately given me a fresh outlook on what music to use. Can I ask where you obtained the classical music pieces?

Loved how you filmed the children at eye level coming down the isle. I thought that it was a shame that we couldn't hear the blessing that the father gave but if you didn't know it was going to happen then he would not have been miced.. but maybe even an interview section after this with the father going over what he said would have been good. After the blessing slow-mo would have worked well I thought for the clapping as they were walking away etc to give it that more dreamy effect and show the passing of the other events... just a personal view point.

There was probably some jerky footage in some clips that as the editor I would have kept out of it or cut back but again that is my personal view point.

I am one of those people listed that has not posted any of my work on video university due to the fact that i am in Australia and we are not blessed with large website spaces as in the USA and i know that people would flood my website looking at my work and then it would be unavailable to my clients. While Howard has offered me his space to view my work I would still want my buiness name/logo on it so it would have the same effect. I have shared my website address with a couple of people on videouniversity that could vouch for seeing my work. (Howard Neil, GM Elliott, Rodjeeja - hope I spelt these correctly otherwise I will be in trouble).

Anyway... I really enjoyed this peace and feel that what you produced is really in a different sort of league to most. It didn't have all those fancy slow pans and zooms or anything amazingly creative but it was the simple way in which it was filmed, documented and edited that really made this piece shine for me. Very inspirational.

Cathy

Re: [cathya] I'll show you mine [In reply to] Can't Post

Cathy,

Thanks for taking the time to watch. I know it's hard to find an hour after we have been working all day on our own weddings.

Her parents were interviewed before and the couple and the grooms parents were interviewed the following Sunday. All interviews are an extra charge, not because they take long to shoot but because they take long to edit. Most people just go with the couple's interview. I spend a little time preparing the questions ahead of time.

Most of the music was from the band. The rest was from a film score. I don't remember which one. I an check if you like.
I am trying to come up with good solutions to not use copywrighted music, but thats a challenge.

I tried to get dad to wear a mic but he is a very private person. The music was too loud to use the audio as well.

I am surprised that I didn't have more jerky footage in the film. I really suck as a shooter. I am going to improve on that this year. But for now, content always wins out over style even when it makes me look bad. Which happens all the time.

I understand that it is not possible for everyone to post films online. I hope that people don't think I am being negative and take this thread in the spirit of sharing that it was meant. I know a lot of good people have shared quite a bit and I certainly have benefitted from their posts.

Thanks for the post Cathy. Take care.

Re: [billgaff] I'll show you mine [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks Bill for responding. Don't be too hard on yourself with your filming.. I know just being a 2nd camera how hard it is free hand to stay steady at important times let alone being the main cameraman.

When people look at other peoples work I'm sure we all could find things they we would do different but really filming a wedding is a one off event and sometimes we get bumped or have to move quickly to get the shots and like you said content is far more important and I totally agree. In a wedding we did recently my husband (main filmer) was quite unsteady for some unexpected entrance speeches that he was not prepared for (he usually fims on a tripod for speeches however, these were just sprung on him). To top it off his lapel mic had been taken off a place where it was put and it was dangling around wildly making him increasingly frustrated - hence the unsteady footage. However, the father of the bride was talking and it was his only speech so I had to keep the footage in. So I understand completely here.

In Australia you can buy a license so you can use copyrighted music with your video productions but after seeing your music selection I think I actually liked it better... much for professional so I think you are onto a good thing. If you do happen to find the music source I'd love to know.

There was plently of steady footage just in some cases the jerky stuff could have been minimalised and covered up by cutting the clip short and slow-moing if you had to.. just a suggestion... I do it all the time to cover our tracks and it works well.

All the best

Cathy

Ill play.. [In reply to] Can't Post

I know I posted one a while back but here is another one..

This one was a different and challenging one for us.

The couple are an actor/actress couple and used to seeing themselves on TV so when they came in for the consultation they were under the impression that they wanted something very RAW just AB rolled. I showed them something like it and then showed them our normal work and they ended up going with the more expensive more heavily edited version..
There were a few stipulations though that made the shoot difficult.. There was to be at NO time that anyone including guest and family members were made to feel like they were ACTING.. No staged shots. No interviews etc.. They also opted for us not to do ANY prep and we also were not contracted to cover the actual exit which I usually do staged shots for fake endings....
Since they are actors... I also kind of felt a little pressure as to what they would or would not like as I anticipate them being much more opinionated than our typical customers from an editing visual standpoint...
The church was also the most difficult lighting we have ever worked under. I used my FX7 as a wide shot and even at 18db, full wide, iris wide open and the picture was still barely useable. On our 2100's and pd170 we were between 9 - 12db for the whole ceremony!!

Anyway... Here it is...
http://www.south-carolina-wedding-videos.com/..._Allison_wedding.php The whole thing is right at 28min...

Re:Here's Mine [In reply to] Can't Post

I finished this edit some time ago.
This is a rehearsal and part of the dinner.
You know, there is nothing especially earth shattering about it.
I recently submitted a few other films for competitions in my local association (My fingers are crossed on those...) but I keep on being drawn back to this segment as something that best represents me as a person and artist and what I hope to cultivate moving forward.

I also have been simultaneously taking still portraits at rehearsals - in this case, just the dinner to develop my photo chops - here is what went down that evening as well:

I welcome feedback/constructive criticism on the sequence.

James,
Thanks for posting. Your cut has a great sense of time and place. I like it a lot.
Love the use of nat sound and very nice imagery. If I had shot that wedding, my DVX would have made it look like garbage. Love those Sonys for low light.
Wish you hadn't mentioned they were actors. I Kept feeling like she was "performing" for the vows and I wondered if I would have felt that way if I didn't know what she did for a living.
Kudos for stepping up and posting. This is the real work that we do. This is what we should show more often. At least to each other.
Take care.

Whit,
Thanks to you my new goal for 2008 is: Tape more rehearsal days!
I have a couple booked but I am going to try and do more. They are really, really great days to capture on camera.
None of the formality of the wedding day but all of the fun and emotion.
I can't begin to tell you how much this clip opened my eyes to the possibiblities of rehearsal days. I loved the way you cut the sequence.
Thanks for posting.
Take care.
Bill
