Laptop drive 5400 vs 7200 Can't Post

I'm configuring a 17" MBP to order this afternoon- the only config step I'm torn on is the HD.

The options are a 250gig 5400rpm drive or a 200 gig 7200 rpm drive.

I'm leaning towards the smaller faster drive but how are the differences between 5400 and 7200 in real world application?

TIA

This always stumps me too.

Barefeats to the rescue!

Bookmark that website dude. SO valuable!

BTW- I went with the 7200 because there is an advantage for video related reads and writes which is crucial for SDEs.

I need every extra second.

Its sort of a catch-22. If you want to use the internal for media you want it to be as big as possible. But as Barefeats says:

3. If you work on audio or video where large blocks are captured or played back, the 7200rpm internal drive of the MacBook has a clear advantage over the stock 5400rpm internal drive.

I have my MPB's 320gb 5400 rpm internals partitioned so I can have two events worth of media plus an OS volume. I chose convenience over transfer rate, though for anything except uncompressed I don't see it making any difference.

Thanks for the speedy replies guys- much appreciated.

Jeez...I'm STILL torn. Flip a coin perhaps?

Will the 5400 rpm cause HDV to play back choppy or simply slow down render times a bit. In other words, is it enough of a performance hit to affect "Editing" performance?

Choppy or bad playback. Get the faster drive, period.

I had a work laptop with a 5400rpm drive in it and had delays on everything from application startup to bootup. When I took it to them to complain they just swapped out the hard drive - transferred everything over - and I was AMAZED at the difference the drive speed made. It was like having a new computer.

Done- placed my order about 15 minutes ago:

17" MBP
2.5GHz Core 2 Duo
2 gigs of ram
200 gig 7200 rpm HD
8x Dual Layer Superdrive (wish it was BR-R)
17" High-res Glossy Screen *pimp* Cool

Epson R280 printer FREE (after rebate) ...sure hope this burns DVDs like the ol' R200 and doesn't eat 1/8th your ink on every start up like Bob A encountered with one of the newer Epson Printers. Unsure

Keep in mind that not all drives are created equal. Some of the new 5400rpm drives are actually very comparable to 7200rpms drives. The 320gig that Joel has in his is one of these. It's certainly close enough that you would notice the increased disc space more than performance.

...in this case, bigger is still better.

I do have a 5400rpm 120gb Fujitsu in a MacBook that is slow but I don't think its because of the platter speed. These new 320 5400 WD's are much snappier and nearly twice the sustained rate.

I bought an ink caddy from Reliant for my R200 and R220. I asked David (owner?) about the R280 and he said they're working on a system for that printer. Shouldn't be long.

I also beleive Bob A. ammended his orginal R280 "ink sucking" complaint to say it wasn't that bad. (Can't find the thread though). Doesn't matter anyway as we don't have a lot of "economical" choices when it comes to DVD printing.

Hope your MBP kicks ass. My new DELL quad is rendering footage so fast I'm actually getting something done these days.

Certainly.

Some of the 5400 drives in the 100-160 range are rather sluggish. Any of the new drives (250gig or better) spin really well.

Personally, I am holding out for the 500gig from Samsung. Can't wait for that kind of space.

Inspiron 530 desktop. Great price. I think they're having a fire sale over there - must be moving inventory for newer stuff. The XPS was nicer but had too many bells and whistles I'd never use so I basically downgraded and added two 1TB seagate barracudas instead.

The dual 22" monitors are a nice bonus and saved me the expense of an optometrist as well. Laugh

A laptop like Don is asking about doesn't make sense for me as I don't need the mobiiity. I used to use one but by the time I added all the expansion ports, external drives, sound system, etc... it was basically a dead end desktop unit with all the inherent limitations.

That's what mine does right now. It's probably those bootleg ebay cartridges which I'm trying to suck dry before installing the caddy.

If you can get the 320GB (5400rpm) Western Digital it actually came out faster in tests than the 7200 rpm drives...

I saw this thread a little late, but this is an issue for me. I recently bought a Dell Vostro with 2 HDs, both 5400. My HDV playback IS choppy and not acceptable. I'm trying to decide if I should sell that laptop or just upgrade the 2nd HD to a 7200. What do you think gl?

What are the specs of the laptop? The HD might be a contributer but, it may not be the only issue.

Hi Jeff,

This is definitely not related to the platter speed. Even when completely filled even the slowest internal 5400rpm drive will put out nearly 30 MB/sec. HDV is only 3.5 MB/sec. Its the processing power needed to decode and playback the compression ratio of HDV that is the bottleneck.

Thanks Joel. See the specs I just posted to GL. Seems like that would be enough processing to me. But apparently not.

Yeah, you may need to replace your HD then. The rest of the specs should be fine.

Any suggestions on what to look for in the HD other than the 7200??
