Great article Laura! This came to me a couple of years ago when I delivered a video to a couple and there were nit-picky comments. Throughout the whole process I got the feeling that something else was wrong. I had my wife view the highlight and she immediately pointed out the choker close-up as unflattering. As a male, I thought it was a killer shot. Little did I know it was killing the final product. I replaced it without telling the couple and they were delighted.

Great stuff guys.

Got a chance to read your 35 article Dan. I would be interested in hearing what aspects in particular you feel make the Letus extreme superior to the brevis + flip? You mentioned that you felt the letus was the best unit but didn't really mention why, so I would be curious to know.

Re: [StillMotion] Laura and Boz event dv articles [In reply to] Can't Post

Stephen specifically told me not to get into "why this is better than others" discussion in the article so I didn't get to into it.

But I thought we had this conversation before. You basically called the FE a piece of crap so I told you why I thought the LEX was better and you never responded.

For starters, to get the Brevis to flip the image you have to pay another $500 right? That puts the unit close to $1500. I said the LEX was the best unit out there under $1500 and i stand by that. Its $1200 and it:

- Best in light loss at only half a stop.
- Best edge to edge sharpness
-Image already flipped without need for module
- no vignetting at all
- extremely quiet motor

And more .

The build quality, which used to be its shortcoming is now its strong suit. Its built very solidly now.

Re: [Daniel] Laura and Boz event dv articles [In reply to] Can't Post

Sorry Dan, I never caught your reply before.

I do believe that the build quality on the Letus leaves a lot to be desired but I don't think many would argue that. They have come a long way with the new one, but hot glue on the internals. You probably haven't seen the Lets XL versions for Canon XL cams but they actually have used lenses glued to the font of them as a relay lens and require a shim to operate properly.

I must say, more than anything I am a mostly disgusted with the support from the Letus. When I emailed Quyen about my adapter falling in half, being brand new, and broke a $2k piece of glass he couldn't care less. I asked to have the unit replaced- which was a no go, then I tried to have it fixed, which he also refused, and basically told me to fix it myself. I am sure you would agree that customer service like that leaves a lot to be desired.

Would you mind sending me the articles or what not that shows the resolutions test and light loss comparison? I am not saying it isn't true by any means, I would just enjoy seeing it as every 35 adapter maker claims to have the best for several different reasons.

Either way, the tools do the same thing essentially and it is more what you do with it and what your comfortable with, which I'm sure you would agree with. I was just curious while you liked the Letus so much more as I don't know of any other supporters as strong as you.

Thanks for the detailed reply.

Re: [StillMotion] Laura and Boz event dv articles [In reply to] Can't Post

Patrick, you keep talking about your experience with Letus long before the release of the Extreme. Things have changed drastically in a short time and none of your issues really apply anymore. They are a lot more than just two brothers jury-rigging stuff in their garage like they used to be.

I have received nothing but the best support from them in the last year.

As far as supporters, there are plenty of people loving this unit:

http://www.philipbloom.co.uk/...loom/Letus_35mm.html

http://ryanewalters.235studios.com/..._Adapter_Review.html

Bloom is the most unbiased as he has used every one of the adapters and now is using the Letus EX almost primarily.

That speaks a lot in favor of the Letus

Let me also say that I know the Brevis is a damn good adapter and i do not believe the LEx is "superior" per se' my point has always been that the LEX is the best bang for your buck.

Hey Dan,

Thanks for taking a look! I appreciate your story. We've all been guilty of sacrificing our subjects for the benefit of a technically awesome or artistic shot. When I write I speak from experience! Re: [Daniel] Laura and Boz event dv articles [In reply to] Can't Post

Nice article, Daniel.

I just had a question about something in your article:

Quote
If you are someone like me who primarily shoots handheld, focusing can be a challenge because you basically have to put your video camera in full auto and use your 35mm lenses to set exposure and pull focus.

I don't have a 35mm adapter (yet) but don't you have to put your camera in full manual, not auto? Otherwise, you'd get focus hunting, etc, no?

Also, regarding switching back and forth between your "Letus cam" and non-letus cam, what do you do with the camera you aren't using at the time? Do you carry both around with you everywhere you go and place one down somewhere, or do you do like photogs, and have it strapped to your side with a camera strap or something?

I love the 35mm look but am concerned about the logistics of using one during a wedding day shoot when things can be so spontaneous.

Anyways, thanks for the look into 35mm adapters.

Yeah, i should have been more clear there. I wasn't talking literally "Auto" like we normally use the term, but more in terms of like "auto pilot" meaning you don't really use it to pull focus or set exposure. You set it and then let it go and use the 35mm lenses to do everything.

Sorry for confusion.

I carried my other camera in a bag and just set it down and had the two cams out in the bridal prep room or ceremony.

Call me or PM if you want more specific info Peter.

Great article, Laura! Awesome info that I think a lot of people forget about. One other thing I would add is not to shoot until the bride has makeup on. Most women don't want that this-is-what-I-looked-like-when-I-rolled-out-of-bed-this-morning shot in their video. :)

I'm still considering the mini version since using this with the FX1 and my whimpy girl arms is probably not very realistic!

Oh my gosh, you are soooo right, girl! I actually thought about this... unfortunately after I submitted the article. Unsure

Fantastic advice and I'm so glad you brought it up, it needed to be said!

For the bride who's not a glowing natural beauty before make-up, there are ways to get around this problem by shooting "teaser" shots of her getting her make-up done, which tell the story, without showing her face.

Thanks for checking out the article. Smile

Getting a 35mm adapter is a very tempting road!

But there is more additional costs than just buying the adapter.

For one, you must buy SLR lenses so that you can use the adapter. You can find old manual lenses from the pre-digital era for relatively cheap on ebay. You'll also likely want lenses of several focal lengths so you can vary your shots.

Also, having an adapter and lens mounted to the front of your camera will put your camera off balance and put more strain on the camcorder's filter threads. So you will probably want to get a camera support like the rails you see in the article:
.

While lenses are really inexpensive, (I got a 50mm f1.4 and a 28mm f2.8 for about $25 each on ebay), rail supports are hecka expensive, running at least $200 and much higher.

Anyways, the images from a 35mm adapter speak for themselves and you can't simulate the look very well any other way. Just know that it's easy to get carried away because this tool opens up a whole new world of artistic opportunities.

I'm still in the researching stage for a 35mm adapter but it can get expensive. At least, now you're better prepared for it Wink

Re: [Peter Chung] Laura and Boz event dv articles [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks, Peter. I've actually been prepared for it for about two years. It's been on my wish list for a long time. The combination of a Canon HV20 and the mini Letus Extreme might be a better solution for me. Unless I start lifting some serious weights! LOL!! I do concur that the images obtained can't be beat and it's now pretty much a must-have.

Laura, maybe becasue i am getting a little tired of your snide remarks like this?

You ask for help or answers to things that are right there if you just make a little effort yourself. (I actually answer the EXACT SAME question to Peter in this thread!)

Maybe I am "busy busy" too and don't have time to cater to your every whimsical inquiry.

How dare you accuse me of not being helpful because i wont rewrite my article for you in the post. (Or copy and paste my Camera Selling info for you 3-4 times in PMs!) I know that quite a few people on VU in just the last week would beg to differ with you about my willingness to help people.
