Mini Disc player question Can't Post

I am using a wireless mic system with my VX-2000 with great results recording the groom, bride, and pastor but I need a mini disc recorder to record the music (singing and etc). Will this system need a wireless mic and if there is a soundboard, can I plug directly into it? When using a mic with the mini disc, where do u place it? As always, thanks for any help!

I use the minidisc primarily instead of a wireless. If the church has a soundboard, you can take a feed straight out of the soundboard into either line in or mic in of the MD. Great sound, just bring a variety of cables. Seems the most common I have run into is RCA to 1/8th, although 1/4" to 1/8" or XLR to 1/8" is possible as well. Just sync it in post with your video and your set.
Ive never used the MD for ambient sound. The lav mic I use is pretty useless except for catching the vows, minister, etc.

Hi, are these usually mono feeds or stereo? Do you record in mono or stereo on the md?
Thanks

The cable that you use to go into the MiniDisc (the Y adaptor RCA to 1/8") is stereo, however, you get longer recording time in Mono on the player, and if the signal is not panned left or right, then recording mono is just fine. If you're receiving a mono signal, it makes no difference if the cable is stereo. And if all you have is not a Y adaptor, but a one sided RCA to mono 1/8", plug it into the left output. (That's the mono standard). Even if you record mono on the MD, it still outputs 2 channels (just the same signal on each channel). The way you can tell if a cable is stereo or mono is if it has 2 black stripes or one. (2 is stereo)

Thanks Dan, very informative! Could you tell me if the Y-cable is male or female on the RCA end?
Thanks again,
Thom

Re: Mini Disc player question [In reply to] Can't Post

It's male on both ends. one white male RCA, one red male RCA, and then the male 1/8th with 2 black stripes. Plug the 1/8th into your mic or line input, and plug the RCAs into the tape output of the board.
Or, for playback, you can plus the 1/8th into the earphone jack, and the RCAs in the Tape In of any board. Cheers, Dan Holden
