My first Wedding Can't Post

I just shot my first wedding on the weekend, it was easier then I thought it would be. I missed a couple things because I hit the record button twice by accident, but it was nothing too important and when the camera shut off, I realized what I did and turned it back on and still got most of the vows. I rented a tripod but It was easier to move around without it so I ended up shooting hand held for most of it . I also got brave and tried manual shooting but did not like it . Besides, the auto features worked better and was quicker. I had some shake when I zoomed in otherwise it was as good as tv. I took the footage and added a title and edited it onto vhs. I inserted music as well. I also captured some segments on my computer and added some "wow" effects.I inserted this at the end of the tape as well as a nice frozen image with the name and date scrooling. Very proffesional looking. I used a Celine Dion song. The power of love, was a very good song to use. Feel free to use it, Its a perfect song for weddings. The bride cried when she saw it. I had it so a star wipe would wash out the screen and he appeared. I also did a shot where they both vanished behind a tree and then came back again. I added a star trex sound fx, it was "cute" she said. The clients just watched it and are very happy. Talk about easy money. 1200 dollars for 3 days of work. I think I will do this fulltime if I can find enough work. Thank you for this forum. I have learnt a lot and I am happy to now say I am a professional videographer and not an amature anymore. Also, if you are new to the buisness as well, just do your best and good things will happen
God Bless you all

Good Going! Sounds like it worked out overall. Years ago, I was asking $179 for my first wedding! So $1200 is great!

How did you make them vanish behind the tree? I tried that before with no luck. Also, what did you tell the bride when you missed part of the vows?

I just used the tripod and shot with no one there I used a shot of them walking towards it. As far as the sections I missed, I didnt say anything. She never asked.

Greg,
glad it all went so well.Just one thought, learn your manual settings back to front as there will be times when you will have to use them.

Hi Greg
Interesting post.
I'm curious. Since this was your first wedding, how did you convince someone to pay you $1200 without showing them a demo tape?

Good for you. I personaly would never pay a first time "anything" $1200. But that is just me I guess. It seems like you learned a lot. Maybe you can post a demo for us. It may help for you to get other professional opinions.

Greg, I hate burst your balloon, but shooting one wedding does not make you a professional.
You should never take the attitude that what you missed was not important.
This may sound a liilte harsh, but what you do reflexs on us all as videographers.

The differance between being a professional and an amature is the amount of pay you recieve. Prior to a month and a half ago, I never shot anything. To learn how to shoot and edit videos I watched a video and read a book. Practised shooting sunday at church. Prayed a lot and did the best I could. I am a professional and will be a member of weva this month. I have 3 more weddings coming up before Jan 1. Next year I will raise my prices and do more nle work on the jobs.
Thanks again for the support.

You sound like a hack that produces the cheesy, slipshod product that gave wedding & event videographers a reputation, in the minds of some people, on par with used car salesmen, a reputation that most of us are trying to repudiate by working hard, producing the highest quality product we can, and giving our brides & grooms great service. You may think you are a "professional" because you got paid, but you're not. Please do us all a favor and find another line of work.

Nothing to important...The vows??? are you kidding me!!
"ended up shooting hand held for most of it . I also got brave and tried manual shooting but did not like it . "
Your first wedding and you try improvising with the manual controls during the wedding and you go handheld for the majority of it. You have learned nothing but how to scam a bride. You don't know how to use your own equipment. You should be shooting manual all the time. Also I hate to ask what kind of equipment you are using.

"I had some shake when I zoomed in otherwise it was as good as tv. "
Good as tv...what are you watching you local cable station programming? You missed important shots, watched a video and read a book on videography, shot in auto (amateur) mode, and you went handheld for the whole wedding and you think you are as good as tv....come back to reality.

"Very proffesional looking."
First start on your spelling and then may be you can become a professional.
"The clients just watched it and are very happy. Talk about easy money. 1200 dollars for 3 days of work."
Either you ripped off your client or they we too nieve to see your amateurism. It is just rude, almost as rude as I am being, to comment that it was easy money.
" I think I will do this fulltime if I can find enough work. "
Hopefully not in my town

"I am a professional videographer and not an amature anymore."
You are still an amateur.
Also don't come back here until you get some humility to recognize that the majority of the videographers on this forum work tireless hours, making a living doing what we love to do, putting in countless hours honing our craft.
I'm sorry but this is how I feel. I read your post and yes you are probably so excited with your first job, getting a lot of money for it, and you call yourself a professional. Use that term loosely.
I'm angry because you are another weekend warrior who feels that this profession is sooo easy...just wait...just wait.

Re: My first Wedding [In reply to] Can't Post

I must say that I am very surprised at the amount you received for your first wedding. I hope that if you get any literature made to advertise, that you seriously consider a proofreader. In every single one of your posts, there are blatant spelling errors. As much as some typos are forgiven in this forum, and that yes, this is a video forum, not an English class, I must say that proper spelling of very basic words such as "amateur" which you spelled "amature" every time, and "received" which you spelled "recieved", as well as "proffesional" which is funny because, I must say, if you can't spell it, you're not it. Several things you said in your post also surprised me such as you letting us "feel free to use" The Power of Love, and your tasty use of the star wipe. Ever watch the Simpsons? Homer's first little editing "suite" and all he uses is the star wipe... Kindof cheesy. Any way, unless I can see some samples of your editing, I feel pretty comfortable saying that you have much to learn (considering your first bold statement "it was easier then I thought it would be.") Most of us would state that if it's too easy, you're not doing it right. At first I thought this was a bogus post, considering all the mistakes you said you made, and your confidence in yourself at how "easy" this job is and that you'll start doing this full-time, not to mention all the spelling errors. If you are for real, wow. But seriously, double check your spelling. I think people (myself included) would take what you have to say more seriously. And yes, getting paid for something does make you a pro, by definition only.
Hopefully your work reflects more than the fact that someone paid you for it. Hopefully it shows that you put effort into all areas. And if you're not striving to improve, quit. This industry does not need a know-it-all 1 wedding pro over-charging for god-knows-what. You may call yourself a salesperson, but some would even say con-man. Unless they were friends of yours, in which case, disregard this post. Also, your email addie is @hotmal.com every time (intentional??).

No Greg it's not the money and of course Celine is'nt the perfect song.

This has to be fake [In reply to] Can't Post

I read and re-read this post and I think it has to be a fake. Someone just playing around. I really can't believe in good faith that this could be real. He hits on every negitive and sterotypical point that we are always talking about with weekend warriors. It has to be fake.
What troubles me is the ones that congratulated him and encouraged him. How can we strive to better ourselves and our profession as long as we enable and put up with this type of behavior. Can we stop people like this? Absolutley not. But to encourage and congratulate? C'mon people, we are supposed to be raising the bar, not lowering it.
Yes, we all start somewhere, but not like this.
.......it is fake right?

Kudos to those of you for telling Greg like it is. Last time I spoke honestly, I was called arrogant and an elitist. I guess there are some individuals who can't handle the truth.
I am not jealous in the least that he made $1200 on his first wedding. I'm more upset that he would charge that much with no experience and not feel guilty about literally stealing the bride and groom's money.
And by the way Greg, nothing is "as easy" as it seems.
Another weekend warrior strikes again, and I'm sure there are more out there.

: time to leave....i'm boiling over...

Re: This has to be fake [In reply to] Can't Post

You are one of the people I learnt from on this forum. I thought you where new as well which makes your post all that more dificult to take. I think your work is good and I thank you for sharing it so people like me can learn and grow. I hope to raise the bar as well and I feel I did a good job for my client.
God Bless you Eric
Greg

: I read and re-read this post and I think it has to be a fake. Someone just playing around. I really can't believe in good faith that this could be real. He hits on every negitive and sterotypical point that we are always talking about with weekend warriors. It has to be fake.
: What troubles me is the ones that congratulated him and encouraged him. How can we strive to better ourselves and our profession as long as we enable and put up with this type of behavior. Can we stop people like this? Absolutley not. But to encourage and congratulate? C'mon people, we are supposed to be raising the bar, not lowering it.
: Yes, we all start somewhere, but not like this.
: .......it is fake right?
