Re: Name this song, please [In reply to] Can't Post

It's a well known classical piece. Heard it a thousand times with a huge chorus and full orchestra. Famous composer...darn it, I know this but the brain cells won't fire!

Bill Mitchell

With what I could make out and hear ....it sounds like Handel's "Messiah".

It's called "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee" written by Henry Van Dyke in 1907. (I was a church music major in college!) I might be a newbie with videography, but I'm a pro with church music.

They're probably both right [In reply to] Can't Post

I dont know hymns, but maybe Velma can answer this question:
By any chance were some hymns inspired by classical melodies? The sample I heard was EXACTLY the same as "Ode to Joy".

Bill Mitchell

"Cant touch this" by MC Hammer. I have used this song too many times in my weddings that I am sick to death of it. If I hear it one more time as a first dance I am going to puke.

They are both right. (I remember playing this on the French Horn, many years ago)
From this link: http://www.elhsband.org/Showband/2002/joy.htm
"Joyful, Joyful ...(Based on "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's 9th Symphony)
Joyful, Joyful is an ebullient interpretation of Beethoven's Hymn of Joy from the Finale of his Ninth Symphony, inspired by Friedrich Schiller's poem Ode to Joy. The text for this hymn was written by Henry van Dyke."
"Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee
Author --Henry Jackson van Dyke, 1852-1933
Music --Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827
Tune Name --"Hymn of Joy"
'But the fruit of the Spirit is love, JOY . . .' Galatians 5:22
This hymn is generally considered by hymnologists to be one of the most joyous expressions of hymn lyrics in the English language

A song by many names..... [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks to all who cjimed in here. It seems this song may have different names. The one I was able to find it under was "Joyfull, Joyfull, we adore thee" so thatnks to the one who contributed that. Actually, I was able to find at least 10 different versions of this song done in all different formats. I ended up getting exactly what I needed plus more.
Thanks again,
Eric Miozzi

BINGO, Bill...many hymns are inspired by classical melodies. But Eric didn't ask for the classical piece. He asked for the "church song."
