Poll: DVD-R/+R/-RW/+RW incompatibility survey... Can't Post

Hi all,
With the prospect of demos on DVD I was just curious to find out what others are seeing in terms of responses from clients that their DVD is skipping, not being recognized, or stalling. If you've had these complaints please offer as much information that you feel is necessary, like DVD-R recording device, program, media, bitrate and importantly: what was the brand and even model number of the DVD player that was having problems playing the disc.
Recently I've had two clients Toshibas (one 1800 and one 2800) say that their discs skip and stall and return to the menu. Redoing the DVDs on Maxell media rather than Verbatim solved the problem luckily. I use iDVD3...

Re: Poll: DVD-R/+R/-RW/+RW incompatibility survey... Can't Post

Hi everybody,
I am to the point where I only create DVD's...I have not had a request for a VHS
tape in quite a while.
In my experience, here is what I've found:
-Apple DVD-R's have been the most compatible (for me) in set top players.
I've tried many other brands, and had problems with all of them. When a client
returns a DVD, and I burn it on an Apple disc, it always seems to work. Of
course, the Apple disc comes with the Apple logo, etc.
-I've only had one person (with a Magnavox DVD player) who couldn't play a
DVD with a label. The label made the disc skip around. Not back to the menu,
but it made it stutter.
-The bitrate at which the DVD is encoded can effect compatibility with DVD
players. The iDVD encoder incodes video at a high rate...and I don't even know
how it encodes the audio... This is why I purchased BitVice. Bitvice allows
better qualtiy than the current Quicktime encoder at a MUCH lower bitrate.
Some DVD players do not do well with high bit rates.
I am SO looking forward to the release (any day now) of Bitvice 1.3, and the
new Apple encoder. They are both supposed to be awesome...and I think they
will improve compatibility with set top dvd players.
BTW...When I get a new client, I ask them what type of DVD player they have,
then I goto http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers and check out what types of
DVD media are compatible with their player.
Take care...

I made the mistake of using memorex dvd-r media from Best Buy. I had a client complain that the DVD skipped after playing for a while. I do not know what player it was, but she said she had recently purchased it. Also, my folks have a JVC all in one DVD player/stereo system that they purchased only 6 months ago. It would play about 5 minutes of the memorex DVD before it skips. I put the same project on an apple dvd and it played perfectly... We have had good luck with Apple dvd-r and Maxell dvd-r. We haven't been gutsy enough to try for a cheaper brand.
Sorry I can't be more specific about DVD players. It is scary and frustrating to work around the compatability issue. Especially with our recent hopes to send out all our demos on DVD. I still like the idea that someone on this forum suggested about including a free DVD player with every wedding package!! :) At least that way you are guaranteed to avoid compatability issues!

Do you buy the 4.7 gig or 3.95 gig, and also, do you get the Apple DVD-R for authoring? or just for General use?
Also, do you record at 2x or only 1x?
I read an article written last year by Ralph LaBarge on DVD compatibilty. He found these brands to be most compatible:
DVD-R for Authoring (3.95GB)
Mitsui (98%)
Pioneer (98%)
Ridata (98%)
TDK (96%)
Verbatim (90%)
DVD-R for Authoring (4.7GB)
Maxell (76%)
Mitsui (69%)
Pioneer (65%)
Ridata (69%)
Ritek (71%)
Taiyo Yuden (63%)
TDK (67%)
Verbatim (59%)
DVD-R for General (4.7GB)
Apple (73%)
CD-Recordable.com (45%)
Imation (71%)
Maxell (80%)
Memorex (59%)
Mitsui (73%)
Panasonic (69%)
Pioneer (58%)
Ridata (69%)
Ritek (51%)
Sony (76%)
TDK (76%)
Verbatim (69%)
Vivastar (63%)
He also says: "The best value in recordable DVD media right now, in my opinion, is from Apple Computer. Apple sells DVD-R for General media on its own Web site (www.apple.com) for $24.95 for a five-pack. This is by far the cheapest price I have seen for any of the media brands on my recommended list. What about Dell DVD+R drives (a bit off subject)? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hopefully this isn't too far off subject...there's a decent deal on some Dell computers right now,...so I'm looking into upgrading my terribly slow computer...or an additional $80 i can add the Dell 4x DVD+R/+RW drive...does anyone have any experience with these? How well they work,...any known issues with them? Is the drive actually manufactured by someone else? (i.e. pioneer, sony, etc...?) Thanks!

Re: Poll: DVD-R/+R/-RW/+RW incompatibility survey... [In reply to] Can't Post

There was a huge compatibility survey done last summer du DV magazine that covered all the bases as far as DVDR goes...Maxell was found to be like 82% compatible...the highest of all....
DVDRW is the LEAST compatible, with DVD-RW being the least compatible.

I am using a Pioneer S104 (oem A04), DVDWorkshop to compile the DVDs and Nero to burn them.....been burning mostly at 1x for safety but did a few at 2x with fine results so far....I have heard that 1x is best vs 2x in SOME cases.
My Apex 1500 player plays EVERYTHING even if the disc is bad....good for a customer to have, not so good to test on on my end....swear that this player would play a disk made out of cardboard and the tracks written in crayon...<grin>
My Toshiba plays Maxell branded and unbranded DVD-R and Mitsui Gold branded and unbranded DVD-R flawlessly.....chokes on all DVD-RW regardless of brand....wont even read it.
My Panasonic SADK1 entertainment system plays Maxell branded and unbranded DVD-R and Mitsui Gold branded and unbranded DVD-R flawlessly.....chokes on all DVD-RW...wont even read it.
I also have an older Samsung that used to choke on ALL DVD media although I havent tested the Maxell or Mitusi on it yet....

AT the time this was true....but that was almost a year ago....Maxell branded media can be had for $24 for 10......in stacks of 50, Maxell inkjet printables can be had for $2.85 each....

Re: What about Dell DVD+R drives (a bit off subject)? [In reply to] Can't Post

I've got a relatively new (2.4Gig P4) Dell with the DVD +R/+RW drive. So far we've had great successes with burns. 100% as a matter of fact, as long as the player on the other end is somewhat of a late model.
The actual drive is made by NEC (I just had to crack open the CPU to find out...; )
We've been using Hewlett-Packard +RW media and Memorex.
Combining all that with the Main Concept Mpeg2 codec out of Vegas....we're really happy with our productions.
