Portable audio recorder options? Can't Post

I'm wondering what's available now for audio recorders.
(The recorder I'm using now is still working okay
but the software has not been updated by the manufacturer
for the past few years and so I'm having conflicts with running
the software on newer operating systems.)

I've been keeping up somewhat on the newer recorders
but most of the folks that talk about those here are
concerned with plugging a mic directly into them and
I'm needing line-in only. Don't need to plug a mic in directly.

Physical size is not an issue. I'm looking for uncompressed
recording of 44/16, 48/16, or 48/24. And I'm looking for
levels meters.

Anything come to mind that fits the bill?

Brack, I know you have kept up on the recorder postings in the audio forum.

All of the units mentioned in there will fit the bill nicely for eternal mic, internal mic, and line in.
The best picks would be, in no particular order...
Marantz PMD620
Edirol R09 (there is a new unit Edirol R09HR, which is more refined and improved)
Tascam DR1
Sony PDM D50

Do not go with the Zoom H2. As it doesn't have great line in/mic inputs.

All of the other above mentioned are really all around the same price and quality, so all are good selections.
The Sony is cool because it is a metal body and the mic capsules can be rotated 90 or 120 degrees for pickup. It has gotten very good reviews.

The Tascam DR1 has gotten good reviews, but uses a built in rechargeable battery, while the others use replaceable AAs. So I would stay away from the DR1 as the Microtrack for this reason. Too much of a headache.

The PMD62o is solid inside and out, and you ahve read myself and Marks feedback on this unit.
The R09 has always been rock solid for me, but otehrs have complained about the 1/8 ports coming lose. The new R09HR has supportively fixed this issue as well as refined the body more.

Here's a link to a recorder I have:

http://www.amazon.com/Zoom-H2-Handy-Track-Recorder/dp/B000VBH2IG

The Zoom H2 records in mp3 and WAV, allows you to adjust the gain (with meters) while recording, has 4 mics for surround sound and runs on AA batteries. I have used mine for a few weddings since I got mine last fall.

One caveat is that it doesn't maintain sync with the video. As far as I know, other H2 owners have not had this problem, so hopefully mine is a fluke. But, even so, I can easily sync the audio by changing the speed.

Hope this helps.

I have a couple of R-09s. They do a great job for me. I typically use them for recording music at the ceremony, and the DJ's feed at the reception. You can record uncompressed audio at up to 48 Khz/24 bit.

Just hit the Enthusiast level with this post - cool . . .

Sorry Jack, can't recommend the H2 for trusty recording via the 1/8 mic or line in ports, just as I told Brack.
While the H2s built in mics are great to use, and really what the recorder is best suited for, the built in 1/8 mic and especially line in ports are not that great. As a matter of fact the H2s line in port is known to distort and clip. This is from testing by me and many others. It has to do with the poor on board pre amps in the Zoom product line. All in all it's a good live event recorder using the on board mics, but that's about it in my book.

This is from someone who currently uses a Zoom H2 (for built in mics only), Marantz PMD620 (for everything), Edirol R09 (for everything). And used to use Zoom H4 (still a good overall unit. great affordable XLR box), M-Audio Microtrack (good box. horrible power design), Edirol R4 (sold the H4 because I used the R4 for multi track XLR recording. Sold the R4 awaiting arrival of R-44).

Micheal,
I chose the H2 over those other units because its suits my needs better than the others. I am not that interested in Line or Mic in, I wanted those condensers and I love mine, so I have to disagree with the disagreement universally. It is a good unit but not every device is good for every use. Am I wrong?

Actually Bill, Brack was looking into a unit for Line in purposes more so than mic purposes, which is why I didn't recommend the H2.
As I said, for use of the built in condenser mics the H2 is great and is precisely what I use it for (2CH or 4CH stereo recording).

You are right that there is no one great do it all units out there. And while the H2 is a great for use of its onboard mics, that's about it in my book. But that is what I believe the H2 was designed for, to be used like a mic recorder..Hell it even looks like a mic.

It's a great little affordable box for that, but there are better OVERALL (built in mics, line in/mic in) boxes out there. That's why I have other recorders for other purposes. The only reason that I still have my R09 is because I purchased it before the PMD620 came out. I most likely will be selling my R09 soon to get another PMD620 (so I have matching units) and use that for lav mic in and line in purposes mainly. And use the H2 for its onbaord mics only as I currently do. Although I will say the Sony PDM D50 recorder in mighty tempting for everything in a small package. The onboard mics are great (although you don't get 4 channel recording like the H2) and the inputs and build quality (metal casing) rock. But of course I have a R-44 coming soon as well, so I might be dropping most of my gear and try to run with one, two recording devices tops.

At this moment in time, the drive for audio developers seem to be towards small multipurpose units like what was mentioned.
In this iPod world we now live in, I don't think that there's much of a market at this time for just a line input recorder.

As you know from the audio forum I just bought the Marantz PMD620. I wholeheartedly recommend it even just having limited experience with it. I am editing the first wedding that I have used it for and the sound is amazing.

I know you are only looking for line-in but I would recommend it because of its versatility. Then when you need to plug a mic in or just turn it on and start recording, you have the options.

I just synched a 75 minute H2 recording to a balcony cam. It matches perfectly. Even the iRiver synched up. Go figure.

My iRivers sync perfectly every time, even though they record at 44.1khz instead of 48khz. But at any setting, the H2 will not sync. It's probably the internal clock that isn't rightUnsure.

Fortunately, it doesn't take too long to adjust it in post.

Mine too.

They're amazing little creatures, considering the external mic recording capability was more of an afterthought, instead of the main focus being transferring MP3's to the unit.
