Raw Footage Can't Post

I know this subject has been discussed before, but here goes again.
If you sell or give the raw footage to a client, do you
go through it and listen to the audio?
I'm not talking about the audio levels, but perhaps
what the photog or yourself or a guest were saying while the camera was in record.
Not intentionally talking about anything in particular but perhaps the photog walked up and made a comment about the bride/groom/family etc.
Know what I mean?
Thank you,
Terry T.

Terry,
I don't, or ever will give away raw footage....if folks don't like it they can go somewhere else...but...was I to do this I would definitely!! listen to all the audio...one could get themselves or others into a whole lot of trouble. I've even picked up guests on the odd ocassion biitching about so and so.
Makes editing interesting though:-)

Re: Raw Footage [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for responding Paul.
I have 7 raw footage tapes of a Hindu wedding that the
bride wants the raw footage.
I haven't even edited it yet.
Her photographer was constantly whining about this and
that (bride and groom and customs)
to Joe and I while we were recording.
We'd make faces or even tell him we're in record,
but being a photographer I"m assuming he's not focused
on audio :-)
She'll just have to wait for the edited version,
I simply can't sit through 14 hours of raw footage.

Re: Raw Footage [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Terry,
I was horrified when I realized what was on the raw footage I'd given to a couple. A couple of times I white balanced by pointing the camera at the bride's dress. Not an uncommon thing. Unfortunately it's was the chest area. It was with a DSR-300, which allowed you to set the WB while the tape was running. So it looks like on the video that I've got this nice, steady 5 second shots of her chest. Yikes!

I've got a wedding I'm shooting for a Hollywood film editor. Talk about pressure. He's going to edit it. I'll be extra careful about what I say.

Re: Raw Footage [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Terry;
95 % of the weddings I do are Hindu and Muslim. 99% of the time they want RAW footage. Sometimes they even want the actual video to be 4 hrs long.... :(
I try avoiding giving out the RAW footage as in the past it has hurt our business. But when a client complains that the final video will take 3 months to finish and they want something to send back home with the family. That is where I tell them sure I'll give you RAW footage but I'll do a first pass edit. It takes me 4 to 6 weeks to get them a first pass edit.
First pass edit basically cleans out all the junk they should not here or see, and also all the bad camera shots, etc... Then that clean version I give to the clients as a RAW footage.
Also now my project is setup for second pass editing with music/ transitions and effects.
To summarize the above, I don’t give out RAW, RAW footage. I always clean it up and then give it to the client.

Ahmed: how much do you charge for your first-pass edit?
Thanks,
David

You've GOT to make him put a link here when he's finished.

Dont bother with the trivial .. I just burn the best cuts and these people have no conception of what ya gets. Had a groom last night refer to a piece of cake during cake cutting as an 8" whatever...low expectations of course. While I could go another inch and a half easy as well as a few others in the room , I decided to negate the comment. Just be prudent .
