Reformatting question Can't Post

Due to several issues, I need to reinstall Windows XP on one of my computers. I have a couple of questions for those who have done this before.

This particular computer is an older model and I am unable to locate the restore discs that came with it.

1) Can I use a different copy of XP to install the OS as long as I have the original Windows XP for the original operating system? I found a tool online to help me find the XP product key. Skaro seems to work well to find the original key.

2) I have Microsoft Office 2003 on this computer that needs a reinstall. I was able to get a free, legal copy through work but I don't have the original discs. If I use Maverick to find the Office serial number, can I install a different set of Office 2003 CDs and just enter the original key.

Thanks for your help. This will be my first reinstall and I'm sure I'll have more questions.

Chris

Re: [Chris H.] Reformatting question [In reply to] Can't Post

xp should install from any cd with a valid product key, verify your licensed key is for the correct os. for example if your key is for xp pro verify your install disks are xp pro and not xp home.

xp is a bootable disc, have your computer bios set the first boot device to the cdrom drive and follow the on sreen instructions. the setup will find your current install of xp. to completely overwrite, select D to delete, followed by L to confirm and then enter to set up the fresh install in the unpartioned space. choose format ntfs quick. again these will all be on screen prompts.

the office suite will also install with a valid product key. again make sure your key matches the version/release of the install discs.

be sure to activate your sofware with microsoft. if your software is currently registered and activated it will update your information.

hope this helps
