Reliable DVD-Rs?? Can't Post

Ok, I know this topic has been thrashed to death...but...
Can anyone recommend VERY RELIABLE DVDR blanks (no branding labels) for use in set top DVD players??
I bought some of those "unbranded Maxell" phonies from Meritline and Insite Technology and am STILL sorting that mess out....The real thing is very expensive (although I am going to bite the bullet and get some).....would liek to find a cheaper alternative that works WELL.....
Anyone?

One thing you might want to check is for DVD-R updates from the manufacturer (although disc quality is still important). I buy from cd-dvd-supplies.com, and although not perfect, for some strange reason my recordings become more reliable with the firmware updates to my Pioneer DVD burner... :)
I know that most DVD burners have multiple updates to the firmware to increase burning reliability and reading performance as well.

Hmmm...I dunno.
When I used bradned Mitsui and Maxells, they play perfectly in my settops...all of them....
When I sue cheap media, I get disks that playback fine on teh PC and in my APex dvd player, but HORRIBLE performance on teh otehr decks......
Seems to me that the quality issue is a big one, and these fake Maxells I was sold are junk just buy looking at them....
Will check out the latest firmwares though....I dont like to tinker with hose unless I know someothing is due to that....you can scrap a piece of hardware monkeying with those too much.

Be ALL [In reply to] Can't Post

I have had no compatiblity problems with
BeAll disc sold at meritline.com
2 of the 50 turned out to be coasters, but
I wonder if it was my drive needing a firmware
upgrade, or the fact that I had pre-labeled
them.
Anyway, the 48 that burned are very reliable.
They even play on my mother-in-law's cheapie
cyberhome dvd player.
I have also had no problems with TDK... but
those were bought at Circuit City and were more
expensive.

True...I don't like messing with the firmware that much, either. I checked out updates for my particular model of DVD burner, though, and when every single one of them (several in several weeks) states that it improves burning reliability...well, I hate to burn coasters.
And, true again...not all discs are created equal.
This is the statement that I received from cd-dvd-supplies after inquiring about it. The response was received within a few hours of the initial inquiry, which is quite good:
===================================================
Thanks for your business, we really do appreciate it. These are basically burning, not playing issues. The problems you describe are very common when most DVD-R writers are burning new 4x-1x discs... IF they have not been upgraded with the latest "bug fixes" (new firmware patches) from their manufacturers, released within the last month or two in most cases, see links below. Even very new burners generally need new firmware to work dependably with 4x-1x discs.
To correct and improve these burning problems, Sony, Pioneer, NEC, and dozens of other DVD writer manufacturers have release several new firmware upgrades over the last few weeks, sometimes two or three releases over that short period! These upgrades do several things for the burner, including improving its ability to burn many different brands of 4x-1x discs more reliably, and then those discs will play in more DVD players with significantly fewer problems.
Once upgraded, your DVD burner will probably work very well with our high quality 4x-1x DVD-R professional grade discs, just as other customers have experienced. Please go to this page below to download the latest firmware upgrades for your burner...
For Sony combination DVD-RW/+RW burners...
http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/software_dwn.htm
For other brands of combination DVD-RW/+RW burners...
http://www.dvdrw.com/productupgradeportal/index_en.html
For Pioneer DVR-105/104/103 or A05/A04/A03...

For other brands of DVD-RW burners...
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Firmware/LatestFirmwareUpdates.asp
Apple Mac G4 Superdrives do not work well with most 4x-1x discs at this time, and Apple has not made firmware upgrades for their OEM Superdrives. We recommend using only our 2x Ultra "famous brand" DVD-R or our 1x bulk DVD-R products for those systems, until Apple releases new firmware as have the other manufacturers.
Thousands of our customers have used these firmware upgrades and solved their disc burning and playback problems.
Unfortunately, we cannot release the factory which makes any of our bulk products. This has been our bulk generic product policy since 1981, when we first introduced bulk diskettes into the industry. Bulk non-branded products are made to our standards, and tested to meet those standards, and then guaranteed by us instead of being guaranteed by their factories. From time to time, we may change a provider of a particular product as market conditions and product improvements dictate.
However, the symptoms you describe above closely resemble the problems of a poorly performing DVD burner, not disc. The burner is not error-checking and adjusting itself during the writing process, even though it appears to be doing the burning alright. Many brands and models of DVD burners exhibit these kinds of problems in burning discs... meaning that some brands of discs they burn with no apparent errors do not play well in DVD players, and sometimes do not even appear to burn well.
Hope that information helps.

My current fave is Fujifilm
($99 for a 50 count spindle @ Best Buy)
Highly realible with no coasters yet. I formerly used Verbatim, but switched to Fuji when I couldn't find any one time. The same company makes them, Mitsuibishi Chemical.

I think we are saying the same thing but talking about two different issues....
The quote from your source indicates you were having burning issues.....So far, my Pioneer has never rejected ANY cheap disk.....its the playback on settops that is the issue for me.
If the burner were not properly checking for errors, I doubt that the Maxell disks would play perfectly, which is the case.
Good info though.....I may check for firmware for mine, just to test.....By the way, your source also states that "Apple has no firmware updates for their superdrives".....This isnt quite true...while apple may not, Pioneer does....the 104 superdrive is the same exact drive as the Ao4, etc.....Not sure if Pioneer has Apple versions of the firmware or not...but APple users could theoretically slap their superdrive into a PC, update it that way and then back into their Apple...
