Remote Pan Tilt heads Can't Post

I've been thinking about a remote pan/tilt head to use on a 3rd camera. It's really a back-up and I don't plan on constant adjustment during a ceremony but it would be nice to move the camera just enough to get proper framing.
Since I'm thinking about putting it on the opposite side of the church, I will need some sort of remote control. Well here is the real question; I've been looking at the Bescor 101 and the Sunpak 200. The cost is about the same but the Bescor uses a hard-wire control while the Sunpac has a wireless IR control. Anyone have experience with either of these? I'll either use it with a TRV 900 or VX2000.

Re: Remote Pan Tilt heads Can't Post

I've been thinking of the same thing and those two pan and tilt heads are the ONLY two in a reasonable price range, from there it goes into thousands of dollars...
I've seen the Bescor in operation in a theatre where they tape the show and they ran wires with an led on the end and taped it to the infared input of the camera so they could control the zoom. The pan and tilt, of course, is wired.
The Sunpak uses infared as the remote control. My proplem with infared is reliability and distance. If you try to use infared remote control in a building lighted only by florsent lights it won't work as the florsent lights interfere with the infared transmission!
Still I'm thinking of using the sunpak and a infared repeater to get the distance I need. I already use a Elite Video Long Distance runner to get my video signal back to my location where I have the mixer.

Re: Remote Pan Tilt heads [In reply to] Can't Post

I've used both and neither works well. The bescor requires an unruly wire, and the sunpak needs some sort of wireless link as the IR is on the front and may not work if blocked. I'm currently using the bescor as it seems to be more reliable. Frezzi makes a really nice system for about $30,000 ... amazing! Keep in mind that you will need a monitor to see what is on the camera and a zoom controller like the varizoom or whatever to control the camera functions. When you add it up it's $800-$1000.

Rader Engineering puts all this together in a package sold as the "Rader Remote Cam", and it costs about $2K. Varizoom has a similar package, at about $3-4K.

You wouldn't have a URL for Rader Engineering would you??
Thanks,
Phil

Yes, but it's not much of a website...just a placeholder for their address and phone number. They'll send you some hard copy literature if you ask, though. Try here: http://www.radervideo.com

Keep in mind that you're going to have to run a cable anyway in order to monitor your third camera. You might as well use the Bescor and tie the two cables together. Whey take a chance on IR?
I have an older unit that has the remote control wired into the box, but the guy that made it is out of business. I purchased mine when my son played high school soccer. I built a crane for my tripod and mounted the camera on top. I was the envy of all the parents ... simply known as "that camera guy." ;-)

Re: Remote Pan Tilt heads [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the reply Scott!
I'm leaning toward the Bescor for the reason you gave - I have to run a monitor wire anyway. I have a 5" TV that can run on batteries if I don't have AC power and I bought an audio cable (RCA ends) to feed it from the camera. 72 feet of wire and it works great. My VX 2000 has an IR receiver on the front and back so, I can use the Sony remote unit that comes with the camera for fine tuning the zoom. It seems to work within 40' to 50'.
I also understand "that camera guy". I coached hockey and baseball for 16 years but now that my youngest son is playing on a high school teams, I've turned into the "video guy". Can't remember all the hockey, baseball and track highlight tapes I've done. Lots of hours taping and editing but having those memories on tape...PRICELESS!
Thanks
Jim
