Repetitive strain injury ( RSI) and editing Can't Post

Have been troubled by severe hand strain in last few months which extends upto the elbow and sometimes keeps me awake at night. A Doctor has identified it is tendinitus and a physiotherapist has now explained that it is RSI from regular use of the mouse to edit - any other uses of the hand have been ruled out....

This strain is also apparently well known to typists and the remedy - apart from abandoning editing (not) - is apparently to

1. get my ergonomics right when facing the monitor
2. Having a mouse pad under the wrist
3. Wear a brace around the hand to keep the hand level and not bent
4. Use ice cubes on the inflamed arm during the day
5. Change the mouse to another one so that new muscles are used
6. certain exercises
7. Drink plenty of Vodka or beer to cheer myself up

I am tempted to rely simply on Number 7

If any of you guys have suffered the same ailment and have had some success please let me know.

Wow. I have never experienced that. Crazy.

I use one of those extra large mouse pads and one of those wrist support things that is filled with jelly, like Stretch Armstrong.

A few years ago I started feeling some RSI type of symptoms. I switched from a mouse to a track ball and it's been great. I use the Kensington Expert Mouse.

I am going through a muscle problem as well in the elbow, but not brought on by computer use, amazingly, and am also going through therapy (physiotherapy, which entails readjustment (resetting) of the muscle).
One thing that your didn't mention is taking Ibuprofen (ADVIL and such) is also a very good idea to shrink the inflammation.

OUCH...

I had something similar, but in the elbow ... don't remember the clinical name, but the English translation was tennis elbow. Apparently, sanding walls that had wallpaper paste grit on them can cause it too... LOL

Ice 20 on 20 off, anti inflammatory drugs, and a lot of don't do this because it hurts and 6 months later I was good as a Sony, I mean gold.

I have to say.. #7 does sound good.

I always work with a high desktop. It keeps my wrists in natural limp position. No injuries to date, and I log many computer hours.

I have known several editors who had fairly severe RSI. Switching from a mouse to a Wacom tablet and pen pretty much eliminated the RSI.

I've got an off-and-on-again soreness in the index finger (aka pointer
finger) that's from clicking the mouse. It gets worse when I'm
heavy editing. I've thought about switching the functions of
the mouse keys so that my middle finger takes over more of the
action.

Hey Brack

The moment it affect the index finger and you may find yourself unconsciously rubbing it then it's apparently the muscles in the upper forearm that are under stress and getting inflamed. I ignored it for too long

I was experiencing the same sort of symptoms but much much worse. I was found to have a torn tendon and require surgery. I have been in intense pain for a few months now. It definitely affects the time I can spend editing. In fact it has gotten so bad, I need help in getting dressed, brushing my hair and anything involving my right arm. Forget sleeping in bed. Lying flat puts my shoulder at such an angle that I am in agony all night long. They have given me pain meds that is one step below morphine. It HELPS with the pain but doesn't eliminate it. But it makes me so drowsy all the time I can't do much of anything. They have national health care here in the UK so I will have it all taken care of, but the wheels of the system turn slowly.

Re: [ivey] Repetitive strain injury ( RSI) and editing [In reply to] Can't Post

A while back I had a nerve problem that caused pain, swelling, and
weakness in my whole right arm. (It was a problem originating
in the upper back and neck area of the spine that radiated all down
the arm.) I normally operate the mouse with the right hand and,
for a few months till the condition improved, I had to operate the
mouse with the left hand. So, switching hands can be done if
the situation calls for. It helps to use a "universal mouse"
(i.e. one that's not specifically designed for left- or right-hand
usage). Windows has an option to switch the operation of the left and
right mouse keys so that what is normally a left-click can be
changed to a right-click. This might help the switch of using the
mouse with one hand to using it with the other.

Hey Lisa

Are you making a connection between your work editing and the symptons you have?

Re: [Godfrey] Repetitive strain injury ( RSI) and editing [In reply to] Can't Post

No, There is a tear in the tendon in my shoulder that is the cause of the pain. However, there are nerves involved which affect my whole arm and hand. So when I do certain things, like use a mouse, I have increased pain. Once the tear is repaired and I go through therapy to regain use of my arm, I should be good as ever.

Try having an arm problem AND having to go out shooting events,
carrying around a tripod with a camera and light on it for a 12-hour
day.

No thanks. I'm REALLY glad that I am no longer shooting. I just wouldn't be able to do it. I get such intense stabbing pains sometimes that it drops me to my knees. I often wonder how I would be able to cope if I were still shooting. I'm sorry that you have to go through that.

I recommend switching to a trackball as it minimizes wrist action as well as flat out changes the over all movements you use. I even switch up the style of trackball I use going between a Logitech Marble Mouse and Logitech wireless Optical TrackMan and a no longer sold Microsoft trackball.

I have never used one, but the Kensington units usually get good reviews also.

Ditto here on using a trackball, specifically the Logitech Trackman Marble Mouse: http://www.amazon.com/...G/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

This has made a huge difference for me in being able to work long hours on all kinds of computer projects with minimal wrist strain, as you only move your fingertips rather than your whole wrist. Takes a little getting used to at first, but try one for a few weeks and I'll bet much of your current pain will go away (worked for me a few years ago and I never use a regular mouse any more if I can help it).

Re: [Tim Kennelly] Repetitive strain injury ( RSI) and editing [In reply to] Can't Post

The Kensington Track Ball is the only thing I have used for years now. I am sure they are much better than a regular mouse. I can't even use one of those. But even the trackball can't eliminate all the pain if it is bad enough. I have bad days and then I have real bad days. On those real bad days, it's almost tortuous to do tedious repetitive movements of the trackball such as color correcting lots of clips. Typing is not so bad though. Surgery is scheduled next week. Hopefully after a few weeks of therapy, I'll be back to normal.
