Same Day Edit MADNESS Can't Post

Sometimes I wonder why I do these..... I run around like a madman all day long, I'm stressed out, can't think straight, did I mention I'm going crazy....lol!! In all reality they are a lot of fun and soooo worth it. I love working that hard on something and then getting to show it in front of 400 people and then have the bride balling her eyes out and telling me that the video will be her most cherished thing from her wedding day!! PRETTY COOL. I'd like to share the Same Day Edit I did this past weekend. http://vimeo.com/1484892 I got inspired by some videos I saw recently and wanted to try and get some different shots.....

Nice job and cute bride!! I like how you mixed up the shots of the bride's shoes. My only suggestion is to make sure people spit out their gum! :)

SDE's really ARE addicting, aren't they? I tell people they take one year off your life while you are working on it, but then you get two years back when you see the reaction!

It is totally blowing my mind to see how many people are doing SDEs this year. Just a few years ago there really were only a handful of us working on them, but now so many people have jumped in...it's fantastic!!

Yea I've been doing SDE's for around 3 years now and they certainly have come a long way. Funny you say the thing about taking years away. I actually have been saying that a lot lately to people. Thanks for the comment.

But the important part is that you GAIN years back (and then some!) when you show the SDE! :)

I think I do better when the couple runs behind schedule and I am in a "I don't care if I finish this stupid thing" mode. LOL

Aren't SDE's brilliant? Yeah, there's the stress and such, but the reactions are sooo worth it! Great clip, some really nice colours in there! Well done.

That's why we have Joe do the editing when we do have the opportunity to do them here. He can afford to have the years taken off his life...

Re: [Julian - CV] Same Day Edit MADNESS [In reply to] Can't Post

Looks good. Love the pacing and vibe of the whole piece. Great track you used. Very good mixture of static and moving shots with some strong compositions in there.

A couple things I noticed:
-I would watch your white balance for the preps OR do some more color work. It looked like a good amount of clips were rather orange.
-It appeared as though there were some shots were the focus was on the background not the subject. I would definitely watch out for that.
-Some of your money shots seemed to lack a little punch. The stop motion ring shot or the lights coming on, as an example, just didn't seem to have that sizzle to them to really carry you into the next clip. For the rings I would try something tighter to get in on the action and bit more. For the church shot some heavy grading while really pressing the blacks would have emphasized what was happening quite a bit.

Hope that helps.

I thought it was nice, and pretty well executed. Constructively I must say that I thought you had too many shots of similar compositions back to back and that you lifted someone else's work too much. With 3 years of SDE experience you ought to be able to get some of your own original ideas. I wouldn't be so pious to say that I wouldn't or haven't lifted someone else's creative idea but I certainly wouldn't post it publicly or if I did I would at least ask their approval or at least credit them by name.

Re: [gebbs] Same Day Edit MADNESS [In reply to] Can't Post

i thought this was great. cool shots - even if they're borrowed... and i don't doubt that they LOVED it!

one thing i'm not a huge fan of is the processional - i don't mind using it in my own edits - but i don't like showing the same camera angle for each one. looks like you did it intentionally - but i'm just not a fan of it.

other than that - i thought it was great... very cool song, great shots, nice flow, etc etc...

Thanks Ryan for the kind comments, I really appreciate it and YES they did LOVE it. The bride was in tears. As far as the processional goes... I honestly don't know why I do it that way cause I really don't like the way it looks either. I'll have to try and break the habit.

Bruceo......... I have no problem giving credit where credit is due. I just didn't even think about it in my original post. Please check out still-motion.ca CAUSE THESE GUYS ROCK!! Watching their work has really inspired me to think outside the box and try new things. Let me tell you...trying some of the shots these guys pull off isn't easy at all and I commend them for what they do. As far as asking someones approval to post on a public forum, I think not. It would be different if I actually stole a clip directly from someones video... But no one shot is copyrighted. I just simply took some very very good ideas from someone elses video (still-motion) and tried to incorporate them into my own work. I'm sure we are all guilty of that in one way or another. I'm definately trying to put my own spin on them though. But thanks for your critique.

Patrick thanks for the critique, it means a lot to me. I came across your promo recently and it really inspired me to think outside the box and try new things. I hope you didn't mind that I used a few of your ideas in the video. Sometimes it can be difficult to be 100% original. I need to learn how to be more calm on the wedding if that is even possible. Time goes by so quickly and I'm so stressed that it is hard sometimes to try new things. I must say after attempting some similar shots that you guys do. IT'S NOT EASY!!! What you guys pull off absolutely blows me away. Thanks again.
