Sending audio to house system for video projection... Can't Post

Hi all,
I'm looking for some advice on how to successfully send a line level/2 x RCA output from a VX2000 into a wall mounted Mic level input from the overhead PA system of a reception hall. When I do Photo Montage presentations with a video projector and I run into a situation that I can't use the DJ's or Band's PA I need to hook into the house system. I realize I have to attenuate the signal, but after investing in $300 in adapters, cables and a mixing board I still get a high pitched whine or buzz when I attempt to do this. Anyone have an equipment list that works???
Thanks,

Is the podium or house mike still on when you show the video? It could be picking up from the speakers, creating feedback.

Hi Joel,
This is actually an issue I deal with at my day job. I am the head of the video department for a company that installs sound systems and lcd proectors in churches. There are buzzing issues all the time in churches, and 9 times out of 10 it's a ground hum problem. When the electric phases get mixed, you can get a buzzing noise. Every effort is made to keep the sound system on a different line than the video, but the second you connect a vcr to both the projector AND the sound system, you've "married" the two lines together. [ I think I explained that right :) ]
The answer is to go as passive as possible. RAPCO (www.rapco.com) makes a battery powered "tape deck interface" for $30ish I believe, and another for around $60 with volume controls. It keeps the electricity from becoming an issue.
I hope that helps at least a little.

That's exactly what happened Sunday. I tested the audio system (VX2000 to mixer to Mic input of house system) and it sounded great. But when I plugged in and powered up the projector I got a horrible buzz. I was able to minimize it by plugging the projector into a different outlet but it was still there and annoying...

It does, totally. I have the option to go with battery power on the Samson mixer I have and I can go battery powered with the VX2000 instead of plugging it in. Do you think that would help? Or is the "tape deck interface" for the projector? Sorry for my ignorance. Audio is the weak link in my productions at all levels....

Check out this transformer. It is expensive but will take care of 90 percent of the hum problems. Get an xlr male to rca female adapter attach one end to your camera, the other to this transformer and voila. Check out the link and it should take you directly to a company called sescom.
Good luck.

easy fix [In reply to] Can't Post

I mentioned the Rapco device as a solution for going from line in to low-z mic output, which you may have already had an adapter for that. If you did need something like that though, it's the way to go because it's battery powered. The more devices you have on an electrical phase, the harder it will be to pinpoint where the problems are. But that doesn't even seem to be the problem.
This is the simple cost effective way (based on what you've told me) to solve your problem:
Buy a three-prong to two-prong plug adapter. They aren't more than a few bucks. Stick it on the end of your projector plug. This will eliminate the projector's ground line from going into the wall. The hum should stop. And yes, run the vx2000 and the mixer off of batteries if you can. It will save you from having multiple points to troubleshoot from.
Also, here's a little troubleshooting guideline:
-If you hear a "whine," it's an attenuation problem.
-If you hear a "hum," it's a grounding problem. And if you listen hard enough you can actually hear the cycles in the hum!

For many years regardless of the unbalanced feed I've used an old 200M Shure XLR mixer for complete control of level. It has switchable rca in to match impedence to house system. An attenuator will reduce hiZ to lowZ but won't change impedence. I now use a Pioneer 7000 DVD R-W as my feed deck. Last saturday did another ceremony on the end job...love the feedback on these.

Joel,
Buy a direct box which has a ground lift switch and signal attenuation switch on it. It will allow you to isolate the ground and attenuate your line level to mic level. They normally have a 1/4" phono jack input and a XLR male output. Carvin has one with both for a reasonable price.
You will also need a balanced cable(s) with XLR connectors to run from the direct box to the house sound system.
Actually, you really need a mixer too so you can adjust the volume going to the house sound system since often they have their volume set for their house mic and will not allow you to change the volume. Some facilities will allow access to their mixer where you can adjust your volume but most will not.
