Show your guy prep (clips) Can't Post

Guys before the ceremony - not always a place where you want to get stuck for 3 hours. There might be two or three funny moments that occur that are appropriate enough to include in the final product.

Apart from the groom opening a gift from his bride, or the groomsmen opening their gifts, there's rarely an extended piece of action comparable to the bride getting into her dress or her father seeing her for the first time or a number of other moments that happen with the ladies. It's mostly burps and chuckles.

I find guys to be a cutaway to the action happening with the girls. Interested to hear about and to see how y'all include the fellas before the ceremony. I'm always in need inspiration in that department (and I don't want to go to the golf course!)

Here's a short piece of guy prep (feb. 21 entry) that demonstrates how much time (out of a 20 to 30 minute product) I typically give to the men.

jones

p.s. clarification. in the blog post (aimed at brides), I say there's never a shortage of good stuff from the guys - whether or not it's appropriate is an entirely different matter!

If you're using a second shooter for the guys, I've shot the groom, on his cellphone, calling his bride on her cell, and then do a split-screen on the edit to hear both halves of the conversation. That's sort of "cheating", I guess, because it's not strictly guy preps, but it makes for a fun segment. You have to frame it carefully...have your guycam frame him in one half of the viewfinder, and frame the bride in the other half while shooting so when you edit them together, they fill the screen with a split down the middle.

Another idea I've had is to make a music video of the guys using ZZ Top's "Sharp Dressed Man". Bring the song to play during the guys getting ready so they can move to the beat. Include the men doing the ZZ Top "pointing the finger" move and edit to the beat of the song.

Just a couple of ideas....FWIW.

Don't often do the guys getting ready. I like to shoot them, waist up in the shower, then shaving, cufflinks, etc.

Howard - do you use an underwater housing or a plastic bag to keep your camera dry while you are in the shower? Wink

Dave - I don't get in the shower with them. I'll leave that for the more adventurous female videographers. Laugh

Waist up? Well then, I guess you can still claim "unobtrusive coverage."

Is there something wrong, with a guy in the shower from the waist up? Do your Grooms tend to be wimps or prudes?

Hmmm as a groom, I just don't know if I'd be comfortable as I'm scrubbing my naughty bits looking out through the shower door and seeing your mug and a tally light.

Hi Dave

I suppose it is a question of who you are dealing with and which part of the world you live in. In December 2000, we were shooting a wedding at a country venue. We were staying overnight at the same hotel as the bride & groom. They asked for footage of the groom getting ready. When the time came, he was having a swim and wasn't going to hurry that. I got shots of him in the pool - upper torso and all.

Right now, I have footage waiting for editing. There are some shots of the groom in the hotel bathroom, shaving in front of the mirror. There was steam everywhere. The best man was taking a shower right next to him. I suggested that I get some footage of that. They cheerfully slid open the shower door and I got a couple of seconds - soapsuds and steam everywhere. No "nasties" in sight. That shot will be a highlight of the groom prep.

There are some grooms who just wouldn't do it.

Cheers

Re: [jones] Show your guy prep (clips) [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Chris,

This is a great topic. While I agree that not as much happens with the guys, we generally have Groom Prep, that is when the bride books enough time to cover prep. It's up to us, as the creative artist, to make sure the guys are prepresented in some form or fashion. Sure, all of the groomsmen generally don't watch and get teary eyed as the groom puts on his tux, but that is no reason to ignore the guys. You did a good job with your groom prep clip.

I have one Prep from our old site that shows the guys.

We also have two Preps on our new site that show a fair amount of the guys. Watch the 1st and 3rd clips under the "preparations" icon and you'll see what I mean.

Hal also sells a training DVD series and one of the DVDs, MCT II, has a whole chapter dedicated to how to shoot Groom Prep.

Hi Howard,

Thanks. The couple from last weeks wedding are in South Africa right now. They were going to do a non hunting safari for a few days and spend about 2 weeks in South Africa. I told them I have some gorgeous calendars from South Africa and the views are incredible!

Here's one of mine. It's mostly the photo session that they did on the day of the wedding that took place where they all went to college.
It's mixed in with Justin's rehearsal dinner speech. Rehearsal dinners are golden for wedding video audio.
