Sony VX/PD CCD problem - purple screen - think I'm afflicted Can't Post

Hi all.

This is about that problem that Sony was fixing under
warranty, where the LCD and recording get a magenta
or purple cast. Didn't someone here have that recently?
(Did a search but couldn't find the recent posts ... wasn't
following it real close at the time.)

What I'm having is screen and recording having purple
cast and horizontal lines running through. Also, body
seems to be vibrating a bit.

Has anyone had similar symptoms?
For anyone who has had this problem, could you relay
your experience with this? What exact symptoms did the
problem appear as for you? What did you do for repair?
Is it a CCD problem? A circuit board problem? Or????

I remember the post you are talking about. Can't find it straight away though. We had the same issue quite some time ago on a pd-150. Can't remember any vibration though. The problem is the CCD block. It is a known manufacturer issue. Sony Business repaired ours free of charge although it was out of warranty by that time. I just phoned their service department and explained that all of the sudden during recording 'purple clouds' started appearing on the lcd, and they were also present on the recording. I told them I tried different tapes and batteries as well.
However, I do remember someone saying that they no longer repair it for free. There was also a list circulating that had the serial numbers of the cameras that could develop the issue. Any serial outside that range would not be regarded as a manufacturer fault.

Brack...it's the same problem I had.

Go to the sony site and search CCD Problem recall. I'm sure you'll find it easily.

If memory serves... that "free" CCD fix expired last October (??). I've got 3 VX's with no problems but always wonder when I'll be next.

Give Sony a call... maybe they'll feel generous now that they have a monpoloy on the universe. Sly

Here's the info, posted in the VU Sony forum.

But the recall expired last October...

I had it happen to a VX2100 of mine. Took it out of the case at the beginning of the day and everything was purple. I thought the white balance had gone hay-wire. I got it in under the recall which, as others have said, ended. It was actually a case-action suit which forced a recall.

You might call the number but being Sony they will probably tell you that you are out of luck.

Hey,

Happened to me in 2004. Intermittent problem. I'd turn it on and get a green image. After a few shoots it stayed green. I don't think Sony had the repair offer at the time or maybe I didn't know about it. I sent it to Macie and it turned out to be a loose connection in somewhere in the lens assembly, which was loose. That was back when I used a wide angle lens with a tight bayonet mount and taking it on and off all day had loosened the lens. I switched to a threaded lens and they've stayed tight.

Hi, Jeff.

Did you send yours in for repair? How long did it take? Do you
know what was replaced?

I did send it in for repair. They completely replaced the ccd and cleaned the heads for free.

It really went quick, like a couple of weeks maybe 10 days. Not bad.

Yeah, I've read that the free fix under recall expired in October '07.
I'm a little peeved because if it's a faulty part they put in there
then they should stand behind it better than that. I read where
Sony made these same faulty parts for other companies and those
other companies do not have any deadline beyond which they will no
longer fix the problem for free.

That's unbelievable to me too... here's a known faulty part, but you won't repair it unless it goes bad by a certain date. It will make me seriously consider another manufacturer when I go HD.

It was a class action lawsuit that got them to fix the part in the first place. They may have done nothing if it wasn't for that. The court ordered them to repair the part through Oct 07.

I totally agree with you but they are big business where money is everything.

Does anyone know the details on the fix? Is it just one of the
CCDs that is replaced? Or all three?

And rightly so, I think, you should look around. I know I will.

I think some videogs are slavishly devoted to Sony for HD just because
they've had good luck with VXs in the past. I would certainly
have a look at Canon and Panasonic once there is demand
for HD. Maybe even check out JVC.
