Sony Z7U Review Can't Post

I thought it might be helpful if I posted a few random thoughts of what I think about the new Sony Z7 video camera. Keep in mind that I have not really shot a wedding with this camera. I did help a friend out and did some shooting at a Restaurant show and shot about an hour and a half of video. Overall I really really like this camera. The handheld shots are going to be more stable because of the weight and balance of this camera. Most of the controls are placed very well and easy to get to. The one control I don't understand is the audio control. I don't understand why they put a plastic door over it with a magnet, so when it gets closed it makes a click that the camera will pick up. Not sure why the door is there and it would probably be ok without the door there. Also the control knobs I think are going to be hard to adjust and see what you are doing. It feels good to hold it, although twice as heavy as my PD170. The Z7 seems to be much more manually control oriented than the 2100s and 170s. Once you switch the manual button on, you must be sure to manually control everything else on the camera, or they will make the normal auto adjustments. Found this out the hard way. I had manual iris on and made sure to manually control shutter speed, locked it on manual 60, but did not do the same for the gain. So the gain compensated for my iris adjustments and left me with mostly grainy video. I love the size of the iris adjustment and the fact that you can make adjustments in small increments. Not sure yet if I like the lcd monitor up where it is.

Now for the stuff people have been complaining about. The first thing is the rolling shutter, caused by the use of cmos sensors instead of ccds. This I feel has been blown way out of proportion and gives people that are not making the jump to HD one more reason to just wait. I do not feel this issue is going to be resolved anytime soon though, so it might be a long wait if you are thinking about cmos cameras. Next is the auto focus issue. Some people are not happy with the speed of the auto focus and think it is not only very slow, but doesn't seem to want to lock in on anything. I have to say that I have not had this issue, but I always felt that the 170s and 2100s were pretty slow as well, compared to the GL2s that I graduated from. The big issue everyone is complaining about is the play in the zoom ring when the lens is set to servo mode. Servo mode just means that the zoom motor is engaged. The amount of play on my camera is a quarter of an inch or so. Although I really don't think this is going to be a problem for me, I did call Sony and make them aware of the problem. For that much money, this is just sloppy assembly. I have been just shooting to CF card and can see no problems so far. Seems to take about 15 minutes to copy 75 minutes of video to my computer via a firewire card reader.

The low light video seems pretty good at 0 gain. I still say it is as good as the 170s, but some people will argue with that. Overall I like this camera alot and do not regret my investment. Most of the things people have been complaining about were things that I would never have thought of myself. So are they really problems then? Probably not for me. Either I am just easy to please, or I am trying to defend my big purchase.

Thanks for the thoughtful review Bruce! I think the Z7U is is going to be a very popular camera- and probably the next logical step for many wedding and event videographers transitioning from SD or upgrading from the Z1 class cams.

I'm not so sure, at least not for those that are part-time or tight-fisted like me. There is a big hole in Sony's line-up right now. There's no cmos offering with low-light at half the cost but with less features. Take away the CF reader, give it a fixed lens and you've got a camera that anybody can buy three of and get a good ROI right away. I think that camera is coming later this year.

Panasonic HMC70

This thing looks old and clunky, but looks like it's coming out at NAB. I think I found prices around $2300 to $2500 mentioned. I haven't seen anything about low light and I'm not really looking for a shoulder type camera. Still ... I like the pricing and I like the cards.

Hi Scott,

There was a good article about that Panasonic camera and AVCHD in general in the latest EventDV. Bottom line was that the bitrate of AVCHD is variable but manufacturers aren't taking advantage of the highest bitrates for the format. The AG-HMC70 has an HQ setting of 13 Mbps, which the author said compromises the image. The highest it can go is nearly double that, but no one is allowing a bitrate that high. And AVCHD editing options are still limited too.

Thanks Joel. I'll have to take a look at the article. Funny thing is ... I saw it late last night advertised on the back cover of Event DV ... totally missed the info on the inside.

And for someone like myself who couldn't care less about
an interchangeable and a cf reader - I wouldn't
use a cf reader even if I had it - how much extra is added onto
the price of the Z7? Probably a lot.

Fixed lens and only 1/4" CCD's. They've got to be kidding, right?

That looks like the one they had at Video 08. It really looked like a toy.

Of course it is more because of the flash drive and interchangeable lens. I thought that went without saying. Do you have HD now Brackish?

I would love to be able to be able to record to a flash card, but could care less about an interchangeable lens.

I believe that they have offered an SD cam that looks just
like this for quite some time. Same setup: shoulder mount
with 1/4" CCDs. I think Julie videochicke used the SD model
extensively.

That is correct. I have one of those and it is really a neat little camera that fits in a coat pocket.

You are correct Marshall. It is just the small avchd camera I have inside of a big plastic box. Reminded me of the old VHS cameras.

That camera looks like Panasonic took a body from a 1988 camcorder and stuck HD circuits in it. I saw it at WEVA/PMA in Vegas in Jan.

Panny is announcing the HMC150 at NAB as well. It will have 1/3" CCD's and a higher bitrate than 13, so it does look like it may be a winner. I can't wait to see it, because I'd like to upgrade to HD this fall (when it comes out) and avoid the CMOS rolling shutter wobble, skew and funky flash issues with the Z7.

That's o.k., but I'm still waiting for a 1/2" shoulder mount, 1080i or 1080p cam. Why do manufacturers insist on holding back on what I want, STRIKE THAT....WHAT I NEED?

It does exist - it's just gonna cost you $25,000 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/...5_XDCAM_HD_1_2_.html - it's called their HDCAM or XDCAM line and there is no way they're gonna make a version of it for $8-10K otherwise their really gonna piss of their broadcast line! That's why the EX doesnt have a tape drive, and why it never will Pirate

I agree...lose the removeable lens, xlrs and make the CF reader an add on (hell I'm fine to ditch the 30p and 24p although it would nice) if it means getting the Z7 down to about $3000 to $3500.

Hi Marshall, I think with the right shoulder support, you'd really like the EX1....I'm very impressed with mine thus far and feel that I will keep this camera for many years to come.
