Steadicam Can't Post

Wondering if anybody out here has used the Merlin Steadicam and their thoughts on it -- pros - cons?
Or is there another steadicam that would be easier to use. Does the vest help a great deal?

I'd suggest you do a search by using the "search posts" button in the upper right of this screen. This topic is talking about at least 3 times a month.
Search words like:

Glidecam

smooth shooter

Certainly check the search function....

I have the Merlin, use it with a Z1, V1, etc without accessories - it can't accept a ton of weight.
GC4000 - I've rigged it up with some crazy stuff and works great.

They both work very well but do take some time go get used to.

The Merlin or any stabilizer is not a necessity and may not make you any more money, but does add a little something to your videos. I've been using the Merlin for about a year now. It's fairly easy to get set up and balanced the first time and real easy to keep in balance. I use it with VX2100's without any accessories and 750 battery. What I really like is the way you can pop the cam off to go handheld and then pop it back on in a matter of a few seconds. I use it mostly for the 3 dances (with a second cam on a tripod) and the cake cutting. You can get some really cool walking shots of the B&G. I also like to walk down the center aisle with the church empty, add voice over of the pastor, looks and sounds real nice.

Good Luck,
Tim

Does anyone use a vest mounted stabilizer such as the Glidecam X-10 for wedding receptions? I just use a tripod, with its legs usually folded in, but like the idea of carrying the weight instead of lifting it with my arms all the time. I currently use an old Steadicam Jr, but don't care for it, especially with a heavier camera. The adjustment plate also has some free play in it which throws things out of balance.

I love using my Steadicam for the first dance as well. Its incredible when you get a 360degree walkaround shot of the couple (zoomed in on their faces, which makes the move more difficult). I can get their faces for the first minute using one camera on a short tripod, then quickly switch to the Merlin camera (which is resting on the Steadistand) for the 360 shot, then back to the tripod for the remainder of the song. I have a third camera getting a wide shot from a high tripod.

The Merlin is not perfect, though. I had to put thick tape on part of it so the clamp would stay tight. I have to rebalance it constantly all day (though it is very easy to do). The tripod adapter plate that they give you does technically work with any tripod quick release plate, but it is not stable, since it has only one point of contact with the camera (the tripod mounting thread on the bottom of the camera). Unlike a tripod, though, the adapter plate provides only about 1.5 inches of contact, which allows the camera to wobble fore and aft when mounted on a tripod. I often will raise my smaller tripod up in the air to get dancing footage over people's heads. In order to do that safely I have to remove the Steadicam from the camera and replace it with the tripod adapter plate.

Here is a short raw clip of the 360 shot I got this past weekend:

looks good. But maybe it's me . . . that really looks obtrusive and in-your-face. I can imagine what the guests are thinking. Totally not my style. Unsure

What you saw (17 seconds) was all I shot from that close (about 6-8 feet away, using the zoom to get in closer). I always tell the couple and the photog that I'm going to do this. The first minute of the dance is the most emotional, so I wait til that first minute is over before I move in. From the time I leave the perimeter to the time I return is about 30 seconds (it takes a few seconds to get the camera to and from the stand and ready to go). For most of the song I'm way out of the way. Communication and brevity are vital.

Re: [JackHutchinson] Steadicam [In reply to] Can't Post

Jack I had the same problem and that's why I don't use it anymore. It seems like the metal is a soft metal that easily gets indented and won't hold anymore. Two smalls strips of electrical tape on the plate does work but I shouldn't have to do that with a $800 piece of equipment.

And you are correct about the balancing. You can balance it for a shot, set it down on a table and it will be off balance again when you pick it up. How does that happen?

The tripod adapter plate has to be mounted to the back of the quick release plate or it interferes with the thumb clamp that locks the camera to the adapter. Such a pain.

For $800 I was expecting it to be better built. I give the Merlin 2 thumbs down and is now just sitting in the corner collecting dust.

"And you are correct about the balancing. You can balance it for a shot, set it down on a table and it will be off balance again when you pick it up. How does that happen?" I have noticed this too. Most of the time it's the arm the weights are mounted to gets pushed back a little, I just have to push it back down and it's back in balance.

"The tripod adapter plate has to be mounted to the back of the quick release plate or it interferes with the thumb clamp that locks the camera to the adapter. Such a pain." If I'm understanding this right, the thumb clamp can be adjusted to where it doesn't interfere with the plate. I have the tripod plate mounted to the camera just as I do on all my cameras with no problems when snapped onto the Merlin. The price is too high, maybe $300 to $400 at the most.Unsure

Re: [JackHutchinson] Steadicam [In reply to] Can't Post

I have experienced the same thing....it never retains its balance!

The big problem I have with it is that it is never really steady...either it is bobbing gently up and down or it is wondering left to right or right to left. If there is any wind, forget it! I am using it with a Canon HV30 and Canon's heavy wide angle digital lens converter. I also use the heaviest battery I can find and the Canon shot gun mike on top. This should be enough weight for decent stability but I still have difficulty with this equipment even after months of practicising!

Re: [greytail] Steadicam [In reply to] Can't Post

I've been using mine with a VX2100 with the heaviest battery, Canon wide angle lense and a shotgun mic. With that much weight (I use all the full-sized weights) I am able to get stable shots. With a smaller cam that is hard to do. I do have to adjust it many times during the day, but the process is so easy and fast it is second nature now.

Overall I am pleased with the Merlin, as it does allow me to do mostly hand-held shots for the prep and formals, and then an occasional flying shot at a moment's notice. No other stabilizer gives me that flexibility.

Forget it!. Picked a Merlin up from B&H about a year ago and it is such a nuisance to balance every time I use it that I am selling it.

No good for my FX1 as I can only hold it for a short while and every time I dismount and remount it needs balancing just as I get ( or miss!) the shot.

Look for something else.

I love the Steddiepod because it balances so quickly and can also be used as a monopod.

Hi,

I was checking out the STEDDIEPOD... looks pretty good and easy to use. Can I ask what cameras you are using it with? Which one did you buy.. the standard or with the fluid head?

Thanks Cathy

ps: wonder if they ship to Australia? :)
