Still debating on new pc nle.... What do you guys think? Can't Post

I for the past 2-3 months have been saving for a new nle to keep @ home away from the office I work in.
Currently using the Canopus Storm2, 2.4ghzp4,1gig ram,duel monitors..etc...
This is what I wanted to do. I wanted to use either a FWHD to bring footage from work to home to work on or to add a hd sled to my pc @ work and the new pc @ home... Either way I wouldn't need to buy an expensive dv deck for home and all camera originals stay in the office....
The PC I'm looking to buy is a Dell thanks to the high rec's from people on this board:-)
But when I load it all up with "what I need and then some" It's preety costly..PLUS the Canopus 2 for a grand total of over 4500...
2 lcd screens, 1 gig ram, p4 3.00 800mhzfsb, Yes I know expensive and big time... I'm willing ot pay for the latest b/c It will last and earn me much more than a sub par system bought now will last for a few years to come....
On paper it works.... People I know.. It works for them as well...
But I'm 22 years old... Girlfriend has her own place... More than hal fthe week I crash @ her place... My PC would be useless to me If I had a tower when I'm 2 her place...
So should I look into a high powered laptop and go with a totally seperate program such as Vegas Video 4?
I would also buy a FW HD to store video files on while I work on the projects... I would injest and output footage from work... SOOOOOOOO I would bring the laptop with me to work as needed and I could work off the laptop @ home.... @ the girls house... @ vacation... ANYWHERE.

BTW The laptop would end up costing me anywhere from 200 more or less dollars as compared to the tower with all the hardware I would include on it...(the lcd's are what are going to keep the tower price high...obviously.)
I'm not big on the thought of the macs.... I feel the are very pricey and even though fcp4 is supposed to be phenominal... I have 2 friends with macs and both have had nothing but problems....(only one has the matrox board in it....)
SO I would say i'm staying away from the mac towers and laptops....

I know it sounds like you want the latest and greatest, but thats what is killing you in the wallet.
I love Canopus, but look at the Storm specs, and you will see that you don't need a 3 ghz processor with 800 fsB and Hyperthreading. Its overkill. Go to dell and play with the customizations, and you will see that you can drop to a 2.4 P4, and cut $300 + right there alone. Same thing with the monitors. Sure LCD's are cool, but if your tight on cash, go pick up a couple of 17" CRT's for $200 and roll with it.
I'd bet that you could get a system totally up to Storm specs for $500-$600. Add and extra stick of Ram on your own for $50, an A/V hard drive and a firewire enclosure for $200, and a couple of monitors for $200. That's about $1100 for you CPU, and $900 for the Storm card, you should be able to build that system, perfectly fitting your needs for less than 2 grand.
Is it as cool as what you were talking about, NO, but its way cheaper and you can still afford to take your girlfriend out to a nice dinner from time to time.

Mike:
The girlfriend is high maintainance.... Thats another story.... LOL.
True about the 3.0 800fsb proc... But in my room I'm tight on space... So a smaller desk for a few lcd's is what I'd need to accomplish... If I hadn't bought that 36 gallon salt water aquarium 3 months ago then I'd have more room for crt's....
I've been playing with the idea of the 2.8 proc as well...
Also for overkill.... I was about to buy an Alienware PC.. but the bad customer service part scared me...
I know I can have a pc built for about 3k with everything I want as well... Friend built his father a 2.4 p4 canopus2 storm and it's running great....
The real problem is that we have to many options... Where is the old comodore 64 when you need it most???? Or atleast a Tandy?

I CAN say that this combination is working great for me. I have Vegas running very nicely on a laptop. I edited one program at the park a couple weeks ago.

I don't know...I put together a dual Athlon 2200+, 1gb RAM, 120MB hard drive, Firewire, USB1/USB2, GeForce4TI, Pioneer 4x DVD-R/RW in a good case for around $1900 bucks, then threw in a 19" and 17" monitor and the system runs pretty snappy for me. And I know that prices have dropped some since then (of course).
I use Premier for the NLE stuff, and Combustion for a lot of the post stuff, and the dual processors help quite a bit. I'm looking at Vegas and Avid, but haven't really had the chance to check them out much. And when the processor prices drop, I can drop in a couple 2800+ or faster chips for a couple hundred bucks total.
I don't use any of the extra video hardware...just grab everything with firewire. Maybe in the future I'll get a really good OpenGL card for the Combustion (Particle effect create black holes in computers...suck the life out of them), but what I have works good for now.
Just pick a system that you are comfortable with. If you need to add on or tweak it later, go ahead.

don't overlook the hyperthreading ability of the 3.06 processers, though.
