I did my first BR last week and it was great. I redered a little bit along the way, but it still took a bit longer. I exported to tape, then ran the tape back in converted in the camera to an 16:9 DV timeline and it was bootiful!Laugh GO FX1's

I've got 2 FX1's and an FX7. The FX7 does'nt past muster in my opinion. The FX1's are good workhorse cams.

Well, so far I've only got the one FX1, and I'm aiming for one Z1U and another FX1. Hopefully that will do me for the next 4 or 5 years, then maybe I can get caught up with the rest of the world.

But after all the BS about how we are doomed no one is even delivering the product in HD yet!!

I delivered my first wedding video in HD a couple of years ago and more recently started offering Blu-ray, along with at least two members of our local association. I'd say those who took a conservative approach to HD have been pretty well vindicated, but some who aggressively pursued HD have also benefitted from doing so.

Either way a growing percentage of customers have widescreen TVs, so widescreen recording and delivery is becoming increasingly desirable. If there was a widescreen version of the VX2100 or PD170 that would simplify this discussion for many, and so far the closest thing we've had to that is the Sony FX1. It says a lot that four years later we're still talking about it, and it has little competition at the same price.

This was my MAIN REASON for switching to HD and the Sony FX1s (FX1s for reliability and price). I am in no rush to deliver HD DVDs yet, but did have a stong desire to start delivering true widescreen SD DVDs. Especially for my stage performances. 16:9 widescreen is so much more forgiving and suited for stage filming. That, and how great is it to film a stage show in HD, capture in HD and edit on an SD timeline. Then take your wide center camera and pan and zoom in to reframe a shot from wide to closeup.
Makes it seem like you used 3-4 cams, instead of my two cameras. Smile

I hate to keep stirring the pot, but the widescreen penetration is only at 22 to 25% at last estimate, so far.

Well then Bob, this is probably a good time to start thinking about switching over isn't it? Smile

I have thought about it.
If you recall I even ran a small poll with my customers earlier this year. Which only one person even knew what widescreen was.
But I have 8 first line cameras, 5 of them full size units. I would be pretty stupid to spend that kind of money so I could provide a product that 75% of the people would get a worse picture rather than better. Its on the way but it ain't here yet. Understand my market is not 20 something couples but primarily their parents.

As we've discussed before, what matters is the percentage of paying customers who have widescreen TVs. Where I am that's close to 100% now; have you surveyed yours to see where they're at?

To be fair, many customers may not know or care whether they'd want widescreen delivery if given a choice, but it is better suited for HD displays than standard 4:3 video.

Something to keep in mind is the digital switchover next year.
Alot of customers who might have older non digital sets, will be going out to buy new sets. And guess what, they will be widescreen. As when you walk in any Best buy, Circuit City, that's all you see. All of the older 4:3 sets are tucked away in back being phased out.

I know that people can get a free converter box for their older analog sets, but most people aren't aware of this, and will most likely upgrade their old set to watch SD footage.

I don't believe that this will cause any rush for people to upgrade to HD players and HD cable. But I think it is important to that there will be an increase in widescreen sets in the marketplace.

In the Boston market there are tons of ads about getting the govt. coupons for free or discounted converter boxes on every station. My electronics service friend has already started doing installations of boxes in homes. (for sr. citizens of course. Wait a minute, I am one of those! Shocked)

I think I will start the "Drag Bob into the New Millennium" fund so I can replace all my gear to HD and widescreen. I figure it will only cost about $70,000 to get switched over with equivalent cameras to what I have now. Care to make the initial donation?! SmileSmileSmile

If you sold your hand-held SD cameras while they're still worth something that should pay for at least one FX1 or Canon XH-A1, then just buy one more and you're good to go for a two-camera widescreen/HD shoot. But if you need more cameras than that and your customers really don't care what format their videos are in, by all means stick with SD as long as you possibly can. The FX1 and similar cameras will be waiting for you when you and your customers are ready for them... Smile

I take that's a "no" on the donation? Smile
The cameras I own have more value to me than anyone else. They work well, produce good video and make me money. No one, I mean no one has even hinted they would prefer their video in any other format than what we deliver. I will likely retire from video before I would replace everything to deliver a HD WS product. Although you gotta understand my product is CONTENT, no flash, no bang, just content. I am sitting here right this second editing 2 masters simultaneously on 4 decks (and playing on the computer), so I get a project done in less time than it would take me just to load the same footage it into an NLE. I am Jurassic Park personified. A one hour event is ready to burn in about an hour and a half, tops. So doing 2 at once makes it like 45 minutes each. As I have said before; I would rather gnaw my arm off than do wedding video - or at least the edit of them. Maybe some HD cam will become 'obsolete' and lose favor to the latest greatest model, then I might gather a few and move to WS. But most likely I will be in the 'home' before that happens. Angelic

BTW, I just received a call today and one yesterday from companies inquiring if I shoot HD. This was a cooperate gig, so the possibility is out there.
