Tell me what to buy.........................before I throw in the towel. Can't Post

Hi,
After feeling like my brain is dripping with an overload of information, some (or most) of which I probably don't need, I am at a point where I basically just feel like saying "Forget it". But, that's not going to get me anywhere. SO, here's what I need. I already have my wireless mic system ordered and I want to get a minidisc recorder to record at weddings and receptions (background or backup). Can somebody just recommend a brand AND model number that they have been using that works fine for this need. I am looking at spending no more then $150-170 for this. I went to MINIDISC.ORG and got lost in the info there. I trust my colleague's input here. Please tell me which one to buy. Thanks,
Eric

Sony does not make them anymore, but you can find them on e-bay ... Sony MZ-R50. They are very rugged and simple to use. I have no idea what they will sell for. Unless you are only using a line input to the MD you will also need a mic. I use a Sony T-145. I doubt that you can get the MD and mic for under $150, but who knows ... you might get lucky.

I've been using the Sony MZ-R70 for weddings etc. for two years now and have no complaints. It has everything you need and little you don't. So it's easy and efficient.
Honestly I think if you just take the leap and get one in your price range you will be glad you did. Try to get something without too many extras as you don't want to have to fiddle to much with it in the field.
Cheers,
James

hit a pawn shop [In reply to] Can't Post

hit pawn shops in your area, they are a gold mine for things like that.
I use a sony mzr70. really small and works great. Just make sure for a fact its recording before you put it in his jacket!!!!
I got mine as an open item at best buy for around 75 bucks. Dont worry about the "PC link". its a gimmick. nothing more than a usb sound card. All you need is the recorder.
I did find one at a pawn shop one day with loads of discs with it. they wanted about 80 bucks for it. Didnt have the money, came back on payday, 2 days later, it was gone. He said they sold it for about 45 bucks. Pretty upsetting. Could have bought it for that. Always talk them down.

I too use the Sony MZ-R70. I found a mic set-up that works great with this recorder if you want to get a good stereo spread of the organ music and background noise. Perhaps it wouldn’t be the best backup for a failed wireless mic, I haven’t had to use it for that yet. Also puts you over budget.
Basically it is two tiny mics that are on a 5 foot zip cord. You can pull the two wires apart and place the mics 5-10 feet away from each other and hide the recorder somewhere in between. Hang them on either side of the podium or the alter, or somewhere near front and center.
I bought this mic from Giant Squid Audio Lab at an eBay auction for $60.Below is a link to a picture of this mic. BTW: I am not endorsing this company. It's just that this mic has worked very well for me and I don't regret the MZ-R70 or this mic.
Good luck.

Scott,
The Sonys look good, but don't they have that end search "feature" that requires you to hit end search before recording so's you don't record over anything that's there previously? I'm thinking of getting an MD too, so I'm interested.

To be honest I really don't know. I only use my MDs for weddings and always erase the disk before each use. Heck, I don't even know if I've still got a manual that would tell me the answer to that one.
I also have a newer Sony model, but it's got so much garbage on it and I find it difficult to get it to do what I want. The older model is very straight forward and for me, much easier to use in a wedding ceremony. I've now relegated it to second string. If I HAVE to have one more audio source then that's what I'll use.
