: Ok, we all know the insurance benefits of a UV filter - protecting the lens from damage, cutting down on haze etc. Of course, you would be foolish not to use one in a "hostile" enviroment where debris could likely damage the lens. However does it bother anyone that in the relatively friendly confines of a wedding that you take a good lens(I've got the Fujinon on a Panasonic dvc200) and put a relatively cheap piece of glass on the front of it - diminishing its optical quality. The lens is only as good as it's weakest optical element. Thoughts? : It bothers some people. I've seen posts on the DV 500 forum over at http://www.videographersforum.com from guys who dislike cluttering up their lens with any unnecessary glass. My own preference is to buy the insurance and take the very minor quality hit. I use a good quality multicoated filter, though, not a "cheap piece of glass". Regards, Doug Graham
