Tragic wedding update Can't Post

I am sorry to report that the groom's father did not survive. I spoke with the bride's parents last night, and the gentleman lasted about 1 hour after they got him to the hospital.
I think I will go with his terrific toast to the newlyweds at the end of the video, and as the guests are applauding his toast...fade to white.

Think how important these last minutes of their father will be to them. Your sensitivity will be very much appreciated.

I don't mean to ask this to sound greedy or inconsiderate, but if something like this does happen, unless you get paid upfront, is there any special way to deal with that issue in the time of greif, or do you want an extended period of time before finishing the video and contacing them? Obviously the reception gets cut short, so what do you do?

Re: Tragic wedding update [In reply to] Can't Post

In my case, the father of the Bride voluntarily told me he would take care of the balance due, WITHOUT any prompting from me. If he hadn't done that, I would edit the video, and after an appropriate amount of time, approach either the B&G, or her parents. I will be sending sympathy cards to the B&G and his mother.
Since the B&G live in Fresno (I'm in Phoenix) the finished video will be mailed to them. I plan on including a short letter expressing my feelings of sorrow at what happened, and that I fully understand if they do not wish to view it right away. After time has a chance to heal their hearts, I would hope that they view the video and remember his father in the best light...celebrating their marriage together.

That would be an very classy way to handle it, Marshall. And maybe at the end of credits, one of those "Dedicated in Memory of..." with his picture? Or not?

Hmmmm yes this happened to me a few months ago except the groom's best man was killed two weeks after the wedding in a car accident.I had a few beers with these guys after the wedding so it was a difficult edit...hope you get through it OK.

I don't think so, Kim. This is, after all, a wedding video and is intended to be a chronicle of their nuptials...a celebration. Just a simple re-cap of his father's toast to them and a fade-to-white is as elegant an ending as I can think of.
