Jamie, I liked this... the ending more than anything! You definitely left me wanting to see more.

Thoughts... I think it started out kind of slow. Really good shots, but something was amiss. The minister's wireless was getting signal drift or something.

Great job!

Re: [JC/DV] Trailer from first full HD wedding [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey Jerome,
Thanks for the comments. I know about the preacher. Im not sure if its drift or some of the artificial livining that I had to do to his audio.. :-( He had a robe with the little gold scarf (LOL) thing that wraps around his neck. When I put it on him I asked if he was done positiong everything so I put the mics on the little gold scarf as it was the best place to connect it with good placement. Well obviously he pulled it to where it shifted the mics more towards the side of his neck instead of on/near his chest. The audio is there but since the location shifted it was more "bassy" and I had to liven it to make it sound decent.. The livining unfortunately "enhanced" all of the noise also.. Marianna (my wife) thought that I had said it didnt matter what the preacher sounded like in her microphone as she always monitors the grooms mic and since she thought that she let the mic run extremely hot the entire time the preacher was talking so there was no backup that was any better than this feed.. Wev'e talked and I told her that it doesnt matter what the preacher sounds like "during the vows" as long as the couple is audible!! Oh well, you live you learn...

About the pace, I wanted the beginning to be slower. The grooms words tied in with the ending and I didnt want to many distractions so his words could hopefully sink in more, because if they did then the ending should have even more of an impact!!

Thanks for looking and for the comments. Im assuming the soundtrack didnt rub you the wrong way??

Re: [jplayer] Trailer from first full HD wedding [In reply to] Can't Post

Great work. Actually, I really like the intro. I felt the audio clip of the groom brought me into the story and the preacher's comments were great plus your shots were superb. Great use of ambient audio and the music is perfect for this couple. Great shot of everyone standing at the beggining of the ceremony - I couldn't see any of your shooters.

If I were to dig for feedback, I'd say that I would have liked to have seen more movement on a few of your static shots. For example, the shot with the brides back to you (1:42) - it would have been nice to be very slowly zooming in or out. I also would have slowed down the groom walking in (1:51) as it seemed a little abrupt to me and I would have cut out the two "um"s while the groom was talking during the intro.

Once again, great work.

Re: [David Perry] Trailer from first full HD wedding [In reply to] Can't Post

Jerome,
I actually cut the clip just short of her not only opening the doors but also waving her hand that wasnt tugging at the door telling the preacher to have the people stand up. She was REALLY nice and not your typical church lady but she also wanted everything to be just right. She was funny!!!

Hey David,
Thanks a ton. My wife and I were the only shooters, I was in the pew "camouflaged in" with the people and my wife was in the back part of the balcony just out of view of that camera!!
BTW... I dont know if you remember but we exchanged emails earlier last year and you mailed me a demo disc of yours. I finally got a decent demo for our stuff so PM me your address I could send it to and I will shoot one off in the mail to you.
Your stuff still looks as good as ever!! :-)

Re: [jplayer] Trailer from first full HD wedding [In reply to] Can't Post

James, I'm gonna be a bit more critical, just because I have seen so many dramatic trailers that are really great, but yours fell a little short. I wold say it's mainly in your shot selection and not the editing and filming styles. So he's the list of things that I didn't like. The rest of the video is awesome unless I haven't listed it, so I don't want you to think i'm a negative Nelly.

1. I thought the dress shot was way too long. You should have either cut it in half or shown another part of the dress - like the back or front detail.

2. I really can't even tell what the second shot is. It might be a chandelier, but even then I have to question why this has anything to do with the wedding. It's not even being used as creative obstruction here because there's nothing going on behind it.

3. There is a shot of a pole with some leave attached to it with a bow and some kind piece of wood with something stapled to it. The couple might know what this is but the average viewer will not. I always assume that the bride will be showing the video to people who haven't attended the wedding, so I think the shot needs to be defined as to it's importance, like a close-up of what is on the board.

4. The shot right after that of the carriage was not as smooth as it could be. If using FCP you can smooth that out.

5. The shot showing the empty room from behind the palm tress bothers me because it's not showing anything except the palm tree. The next shots are of the center pieces and cake, so maybe a shot of the table setting would have been a better choice.

6. The shots outside the building are unnecessary for a trailer, I think. For the main video they would obviously work as establishing shots but are really useless filler.

7. There is a shot of the bride getting her make-up done and the make-up artists leans over and completely blocks the shot. Again, I think for a longer piece it would be okay, but for short trailer i question why you would use this when I'm sure you have many more great shots of the bride getting make-up done.

I hope I explained myself properly and didn't seem like I was trying to be a jerk. Just wanted to give a fair and honest critique.

Re: [Kenneth] Trailer from first full HD wedding [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey Kenneth,

Thanks of the critique.

2. I really can't even tell what the second shot is. It might be a chandelier, but even then I have to question why this has anything to do with the wedding. It's not even being used as creative obstruction here because there's nothing going on behind it.

Actually your dead on the money. Its a chandelier. Their wedding was centered around an upscale hotel in Charleston (prep, guest staying, Reception) that is actually a part of a mall. One of the defining
characteristics of the location is the chandelier that hangs in the middle of the grand staircase... This is it.. So it did have something to do with it. And well, I just liked it!! LOL

As you could tell in the following shot the church was being worked on. The sign on the pole is only a construction permit so you didnt miss anything!! HE HE

4. The shot right after that of the carriage was not as smooth as it could be. If using FCP you can smooth that out.
I honestly didnt think it was bad?? Oh well... I didnt want to slow it down anymore as it would have looked awkward with the cars going by in super slowmo. I dont have FCP so if you can do some other kind of smoothing without slow mo I wouldnt even begin to know how to do that!!

5. The shot showing the empty room from behind the palm tress bothers me because it's not showing anything except the palm tree. The next shots are of the center pieces and cake, so maybe a shot of the table setting would have been a better choice.
I can see your point their!!!

6. The shots outside the building are unnecessary for a trailer, I think. For the main video they would obviously work as establishing shots but are really useless filler.
I used those to hopefully loop you back around to that point in the day that I "shifted" back to after the small reception segment.

7. There is a shot of the bride getting her make-up done and the make-up artists leans over and completely blocks the shot. Again, I think for a longer piece it would be okay, but for short trailer i question why you would use this when I'm sure you have many more great shots of the bride getting make-up done.
I guess thats a personal preference but I thought it added dimension to the shot... I can see where you are coming from though.

Thanks again.

Re: [jplayer] Trailer from first full HD wedding [In reply to] Can't Post

Overall well done! I loved how you ended it right as the people rise prior to the brides precession- brilliant timing.

Pros:
-Good use of ambient audio; I like how you used the music as "part" of the audio rather than "THE" audio
- Beautiful imagery, especially the shots during the bride's makeup
- Good detail shots, and some nice moving ones. I like the ones with more subtle movement with the acception of the truck shot of the dress behind the flowers- great shot!
- Loved your use of spoken audio as well, particularly when you matched it with the grooms closeup profile
- Great establishing shots!

Cons:
- I felt the opening shot needed more brevity
- Some of the shots were a bit obligitory; in that I mean a shot just for the sake of a shot. A better example is your shot at 0:20 of the chandaler....and at 0:33. I could be wrong but the chandaler didn't have any particular signifigance to the wedding...and the shot at 0:33 was a well composed shot but your focus was on the foreground which looked like a coke bottle and straps from a purse. Maybe frame up the bride below the chandaler, and frame something signifigant in the forground of the other shot.
- The sequence of some of your shots didn't make sense or flow to me. For example: You have the groomsmen walk out then cut away to a candle then back to the groom. Another example is the first shots you show of them during there first dance- then you cut away to a reveal around a plant that wasn't revealing anything- followed by a cutaway to a candle/centerpiece. To my eyes/mind/logic these didn't feel right. Great shots but maybe better used in a different sequence.

Thanks for sharing!

PS I Am Legend has a great soundtrack, very sound for wedding usage IMHO. I've had a track I've been waiting to use for a while now.
