Turbo Tax Business: "Pay when you file"? Can't Post

In the past I've had an accountant do the business tax but
thinking about trying Turbo Tax. I see at their site it
seems to imply you pay for the Turbo Tax program at
the time you file rather than before you start using
the program. Has anyone here tried the "pay when you
file"? I'm wondering if I can get the program and try
to do my taxes with it at no cost, but if it seems too complicated
just have the accountant do it. Is this the way it works?

Not sure about the pay when you file thing Brack, but I've used Turbotax for at least the last 7 yrs and IMO it can;t be beat for ease of use.

I'm just on a renewal program where I get the current years software in the mail when its ready - which this year was back in January. I remember reading about how you could do it all online but haven't looking into it further.

Hi, Joel.

Do you pay Turbo Tax when you receive the software? Or do you pay for
the software when you file your tax?

They have my credit card information on file and hit it when they send the package containing the CD.

I just go to my local OfficeMax store and purchase the disc each year. I've been using TurboTax for the last 6 or 7 years, and it IS very easy to use.

Hi, Marshall.

Thanks for the reply.
Now I'm wondering about the State TurboTax version they offer for
around $35. Anyone know about that? Is this a state business
tax software? Are y'all getting the TurboTax state
version along with the federal?

(On a side note, Marshall, I saw somewhere you were talking
about the church's out in your hot area that are skimpy with
the air conditioning ... reminded me of some churches around me - they're
so old they don't even have air conditioning.)

The state form is always included with the federal as a free download.

Re: [Brackish] Turbo Tax Business: "Pay when you file"? [In reply to] Can't Post

I've been using H&R Block's "Taxcut" since the year 2000.

I used to buy it off the shelf but now it just magically shows up in January every year. I pay for it once it's activated. It also comes with every state form in existence (which you pay for later). It sucks in my prior year info which I keep on hand and does most everything I need (I'm sure they all do that). Haven't used anything else before but this thing "usually" pays for itself and since I haven't been sent to prison yet I'll keep using it.

Which reminds me... what's the current date? Blush

Edit:

Just did my taxes this morning. I change my mind about this piece of crap. It didn't give one my kids the child tax credit. That's $1000 right to the refund! Do they know how much liquor this can buy!?!?

My fault. I didn't catch it in time and e-filed.

Now I have to call the bastards at H&R block tomorrow. Most likely I'll need to file a 1040X Mad

Not only that, the damn thing keeps wanting to install McAfee virus checker and a silly PDF print driver which I'll have to pay $10 to get it to work right.

Assholes...

Piece of $hit....

Into the trash heap you go.

Hi, Dan.

Well ... I just started in on the "pay when you file". You don't actually
download anything to get started. You are actually just working
on forms on their site. So far no charges to me. I suppose that comes at
the end.

I just efiled my father-in-laws tax return. Turbo Tax says it costs $17.95 to do so. That is until you get to the last send button and they want another $34.95 for some bank in Santa Barbara to handle the transaction. I understand why- it just irks the hell out of me that they don't state this charge up front.

Thanks for the warning here, Dan. Made sure to avoid the e-filing.

Hi Dan,

Check that amount again - I efiled and got charged $17.95 for state and the same amount for federal for a total credit card charge of $35.90. Is that the amount you saw? I've already had both refunds deposited in my checking account. That (the speed of the refund) and being done with it with a click were worth the fee for me. No priinting, no mailing, no signing... I do remember reading that if you wanted the fee to come out of your return there was an extra step involved and possibly an extra fee. I didn't read the details of that option carefully enough to remember it all.

RT - try TurboTax! I like the way they treat the user like a pre-schooler. They really hold your hand the whole way. After the first year it ingests the previous year's return and compares them, which is interesting and works to remind you over the years how to file for your given situation without having to go through the q and a all over again.

That's how my teenagers treat me so I'm used to it. Sly

I think I'll give 'em a whirl next year. Since I last posted in this thread I've received a penalty letter from the state asking for another $10.89. Mad So I called the state IRS to say, "huh?" and I'm still lost as to the explanation they gave me. It totally slipped through H&R Block's "Taxcut" as well.

Re: [Joel] Turbo Tax Business: "Pay when you file"? [In reply to] Can't Post

Yeah, it was the extra step in having the fee come out of the return. It really rubs me the wrong way because I once had a printing contract with Mellon Bank here in Pittsburgh. The department that provided this service for about a third of the H&R block offices gave me a ton of business. They told me that this was the most profitable product Mellon Bank ever had. The Rapid Refund, as Block called it, was essentially a loan. For two weeks on average. If you annualized the fee collected for this convenience they said it came to something like 85%. Incredible!
