Video 09 - What do you think of this type of seminar? Can't Post

Okay, so I can't say anything as to when Video09 will be, but it should be announced this week. All I will say is that it's an interesting change and the location may seem quite good for many and the room prices aren't bad, either. Cheaper online than with the 4EG discount, and there's a closeby affiliate with suites for almost the same price...

but anyway...

Whether or not anyone reading this post knows my background or not, would anyone have interest if I conducted a seminar pertaining to the aspects of properly running a business with regards to and focusing on topics such as:
---------------

> INSURANCE options and specifics with regards to what should and should not be covered

> Types of BUSINESS OPTIONS and what might work better than others (LLC, SCORP, etc.)

> CONTRACTS...what should and should not be included and how they can and cannot protect those parties involved

> SALES TAXES and business fees per state...what should and should not be done

> How to PROPERLY RUN A BUSINESS compared to thinking someone knows how to run a business

>>>Since contracts are such an integral element of what we do, it can be broken down into the following categories:

Social event contracts......corporate contracts.....broadcast contracts......waivers and exclusions......

I'm willing to help if those in charge are willing to provide the opportunity, so we'll see what happens. I think it's a welcome change from many of the other seminars dealing with shot styles, fluff, and so forth...they're nice, but we are running a business, aren't we????

Marshall you have some good ideas. It would be great to see more business related topics covered. The same old same old is getting very old.

Turn in a proposal for this and see what happens. There is a procedure for proposals that require you filling out on-line forms. Business seminars are the most requested and the least attented. Unsure Go figure, like you said the fluff and wild shots seminars are always well attented. Kind of like going to see a action movie as opposed to going to see a serious drama that could change your way of thinking about something. It's easier on the eyes and mind to see the action movie. Crazy I hope you get a seminar someday - then we will know your name. Wink

Why its glimmer of course!

It doesn't matter your real name. At Video08, I had several people calling me JC, JCDV, and monkey boy. Tongue

It sounds like Philip Hinkle's round table discussion that only had about 6 people show up for. It had great information convered and yes, I think a seminar of this type would be good and beneficial. Just be prepared for many off the wall questions to continually pop up... oh, and often repeated questions. Wink (I think you might know what I'm talking about.)

I think it is an incredible idea as many videographers don't know the business side very well. I have thought this kind of thing needed to be covered since my first convention. I would maybe throw in some accounting principles as well.

Now my word of caution. Be prepared for one of the lowest attended sessions at the convention. Many need to hear what you are thinking of but few will commit to sitting in. My case in point. At Video08 we had all these great roundtable discussions about all kinds of stuff. They were meant to be interactive and allow people to get involved in the discussion. I hosted one called The Business of Doing Business....Sheila Orsi hosted one at the same time about "The Condition of our Industry" or something where discussion was held about how to get a higher profile for our industry. You can guess where the attendees went. Sheila had standing room only, my business roundtable had about 8 people sitting there. I was happy though cause we were able to cover a few topics like sales use taxes that a few attendees didn't know about and they had lightbulb moments where they realized they needed to change some of the business practices. At least I feel I really helped someone.

I was just hoping someone would come to mine.....you know Sheila is so charasmatic. Smile

Just be prepared for a small turnout but don't be discouraged by it. Someone will learn what they need from it.

If he lived in Wisconsin he would be Mayor McCheese. We know Cali makes lots of cheese but the best cheese still comes from WI. Since he is in Cali it would be more like Mayor McHollywood. Smile

Why would Jerome get offended being called monkey boy anyway....Heck, I get called Frogman all the time. Tongue. Sometime if someone really respects me I get called Mr. Frogman. At one wedding where the people in the church were very proper and formal I got called Brother Frogman and my wife was Sister Frogman. SlySlySly Those names never bother me.
