: Who here belongs to WEVA and should I consider joining?
I have recently joined WEVA, after considering it for some time. Whilst there initially appears to be no obvious reason to become a member, unless you plan on taking advantage of their expo's, forums, newsletter etc, what finally persuaded me was what I found reading a couple of wedding magazines and reference books. A surprising number of publications aimed directly at brides recommended that before signing up with a videographer check to see if they belong to any associations and mention WEVA as an example! They also suggested checking out the WEVA web site for local members. Whilst belonging to WEVA does not automatically guarantee that the member can shoot a wedding video worth a damn, it does add some credibility to your company and can help guide business your way. One high end package generated by the association will have more than paid the $160 annual membership!

Re: WEVA? [In reply to] Can't Post

It couldn't hurt by joining, lots of forums and information. But the yearly membership cost is relatively high. Also, brides couldn't care less if you're a member or not. Especially when they go to the WEVA website and see that they themselves can be a member instantly with a credit card.
There's so much information on the internet, and plenty of workshops and road shows, that membership in WEVA doesn't seem worth it.

If you attend the Expos, it is worth it because you get room discounts but you can view a lot of equipment and samples on-line now.
Another advantage is that you can pay $25 or so to enter your own work and possibly win an award. You can then say "Award winning video" on your site. (-;

I've been shooting events for years and joined WEVA last year, attended the Vegas expo for the first time and thought it was a very worthwhile event. There is much to learn from others no matter what level your work is currently. For the money spent on air, hotel and food, I believe I made that back easily with work directly attributed to knowledge gained at WEVA.

Re: WEVA? [In reply to] Can't Post

I can honestly say that we would not be where we are today without the opportunities that WEVA has given at the Expos.
Sure, you can view demos on line and email back and forth, but there's nothing like setting in on an awesome workshop presented by a leading videographer. Do you remember when Loi Banh redesigned that web site last week, just for relaxation. He can do more relaxing than I can do working. Well he presented at least two workshops at last years Expo.
Does buying a 3CCD DV camera make a you better shooter? No, all it does is give you a tool to shoot better video, but it is not a magic wand. It's the same thing with the WEVA Expo. It gives you the tools to make better video and better money, but at the end of the day it's up to you what you do with those tools.
We have received two referrals from WEVA members that are not in my market. Those two referrals put $6600 in my pocket. If it wasn't for WEVA we probably wouldn't have received those referrals.

Re: WEVA? [In reply to] Can't Post

haven't joined yet either but will sometime this year. went to weva last year for a company i worked with. it was overpowering the knowledge and experience that was networking around. the seminars were great, i especially enjoyed the edit work where the same footage was given to 5 different editors. all different styles. there is usually at least 2 seminars every hour that i would try to make. the trade show itself is a wealth of information from the vendors. in the backlot, which is really the open area in front of the seminar rooms, there are tv's set up that run continuously allowing people to watch different weddings and events. not going this year as will be working on my business but will go every other year. it's great to meet people you have been writing to on the boards. one couple even got married there this past year.
good luck

Re: Until they change membership... [In reply to] Can't Post

I am not joining. 3 reasons why:
1) I get FANTASTIC ideas, help, etc. right here in this forum! Thanks Hal!!
2) I don't need WEVA for refferals. There are plenty of other avenues to explore.
3) 12 year old Timmy with an 8mm can join and say he is a professional and have that useless logo on his site.
Sure, I may pay more at the Expo but so what?

www.videoawards.com [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Brian,
I've seen work that was submitted that didn't win a WEVA award that should have (not mine - never entered). I've also seen award winning work that did not impress me. Some was downright poor in my opinion. If you want to have 'award winning' on your material this is a good option:
www.videoawards.com
$40 will get you in. There are approximately 2500 entrants every year. This year 8% of the entries got honorable mention, 16% got an Award of Disinction, and 12% got an Award of Excellence. I think those percentages are too high, but at least it separates you from your competiton. Thats 36% that get recognition. But it's also 64% that doesn't...

Re: www.videoawards.com [In reply to] Can't Post

So true! I was being a little fasicious when mentioning having to pay a fee to submit your own work for some clicky group to judge and give you an award from an organization that bride's could care less about.
I wonder how many videographer who claim to be award-winning have really won them from an organization.
If I give my wife an award, wouldn't that qualify her as an award winner? (-:
Anyway, I've never submitted anything either yet the rewards we wish to receive are:
-being able to pay the mortgage
-being able to buy dog food for our pug, our boston terrier & ourselves.
-receiving an occassional "Thank you" letter in the mail from a happy bride
-having the phone line crap out just before a picky bride or groom calls us requesting to have their video re-edited for free.
These are the greatest awards we could ever hope for.

I don't know about you but buying dog food for ourselves is not a high priority type award my wife and I want to achieve.
LOL.... :-)
Sorry....that one was way too easy. I am usually the one saying something silly like that.

Hi Ron,
: $40.00 entry fee helps who the most?????????? ?WEVA

Having 'award winning videography' on your site and literature means something for people that are looking to hire you, in my opinion, but Brian's right - there should be some evidence of the nature of the award, like a link to the site that gave the award and what it means. Also, when I won the Excellence award from videoawards.com this year I was able to submit a press release to the major newspapers and it was published. That's $40 well spent....

This is weird but when I click on a message by SALcalled "quick tip" under Doug G's topic "Forum Issue: View resolution?" I get Joel's message from a different topic. "videoawards.com"
How is that happening?

I've noticed that several times happening in some of the threads. Some of the messages jump to other threads. I thought it was just my computer or something.

hmm let me try again [In reply to] Can't Post

don't know what happened but here is my quick tip again.
if you have a mouse with scrolling wheel and windows explorer. You can press ctrl and your scroll your mouse wheel to either enlarge text or make it smaller.
I use to change the text size without knowing it all the time. I always thought my computer was bugging out but it was my fault all the time.
This only works on sites not using dynamic html. Regular text can be manipulated using this tip.
