Re: [chriswatson] WEVA award winners 2006 [In reply to] Can't Post

I see some outfit in Florida won five awards including gold for ceremony coverage.
No offence but according to the 3 ceremony samples they've done shown on their website (which is what's delivered to he client...right?) ...I don't get it...poor audio, unexcusable angles, bad lighting and amateur composition...I hope the ones they polished up for the CEAs are much better than what they are advertising to their clients.
I have no idea who they are...and again no offence, but I did submit one of Jenn's ceremony edits in this category and although I didn't expect it to win...based on angles, composition, audio, lighting and storytelling...I don't see how anything this company submitted beat out ALL (that would be ALL) the other entrees for Gold. FIVE AWARDS from the same company who show three same weddings on their site for all their examples. My faith in the judging of WEVA CEAs is in the toilet and I'm convinced many of the entrees get tossed aside...or they're using those same Florida voting booths that bessed us our fine President in office today. Holy crap!!! That's all I have left to say...so glad we stayed home this year and put that few thousand into photo equipment instead.

Have you tried using Kill Bill music in your videos? I'll guarantee you an award...I've got a whole box of them polished up for distribution. Cool

I agree though. (And I'm not saying my stuff is any better...just an observation. And I haven't seen the award winning work from this videographer...and am not gonna pull up his website...posting his URL seems kinda mean Brian... Tongue) But a lot of the videos I see that "wow" people with countless hours of flashy editing are usually very lacking in the basic stuff. Maybe its because I'm still learning the shooting part, and focus too much on solid cinematic style camera work, composition, etc., and am really lacking in the editing department, so I'm more critical when it comes to that....since I'm trying to nail that down first. Heck, I've edited hundreds of weddings in Vegas, and still edit in a very linear fashion, with an only basic understanding of all the features of an NLE. I don't think I'd do very well as an editor for MTV videos.

I can't remember what I was talking about now. Maybe I should cork the hooch and go to bed now...it's 5:30am. LaughLaughLaugh I just finished a reception edit!!! LaughLaugh Hiccup!!Laugh

What clips in particular are you talking about - the first ceremony clip was bad, but some of the others were half decent. They probably just started and only have a few weddings under their belt I'm guessing so their first wedding clips are kind of askew maybe???

The only thing I can think of is that they cut down the Ceremony and used VO to condense time and bedded it with music that won it for them.

If that's the case it proves to me that they a) edited it soley for competition or b) the judges didn't bother watching all the entrees.

Uhhhh ... they say they have 26 years of experience and have won other wedding gold awards such as Aegis, Marcon, and Telly.

I rule this discussion out of order...at least the direction it's taken.

We can debate the significance of the awards (i.e., whether they go to deserving videographers or hacks), but we don't hold up anyone specific for critique unless they ask for it.

I've edited Brian's post to remove the URL of the videographer mentioned. If anyone really wants to find it, they can figure it out from the CEA announcement, I'm sure.

If it is who I am thinking it is, I saw the highlights that won while I was there, and while the video was good, it certainly wasn't as good as some that I have seen posted here by some of us who got snubbed. It was astonishing what the couple paid for that video, and good for him if he is getting it.

Congrats to the VU'ers who won!

I noticed Jason (Mazzy), Mark & Trish, Mark (WOTR) and former VU'er Andrew on the list.

Ditto this. And also to the VU'ers in the GPVA. For every "head-scratcher" you question, there's a dozen more that simply make sense.

Granted, I haven't seen the winning flicks but all the winners I know about and have seen their work were deserving of the awards to say the least.

I was looking forward to entering a piece in the "Cousins that marry Cousins" category but alas, no such category exists. Crazy

Re: [Brian M] WEVA award winners 2006 [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey Brian,

Sorry you didn't get anything this year. I submitted 5 entries in 2004 that I thought were great and none of them won. Alot of it depends on the judges for that year and what they like in a wedding video so the same video you submitted this year could be gold the next so it's always the roll of the dice. One thing I found interesting is the number of new faces on the list. I didn't see alot of the "Old Guard" taking alot of awards this year compared to other years. Some ommisions that surprised me was no Blue Core Media or Silver Star Enterprises. It could be that they decided to not put in but I found it interesting none-the-less. I'm really glad to see Jason Magbauna in the winner's circle and here's hoping he does CVP?Silver Star numbers next year. he's one of the best in the business in my opinion.

I know...and that was an unfair comment about the voting...but it's just an opinion.

Yes...because my sister's husband wouldn't be over in Iraq right now while she's alone taking care of my neice and two nephews...and that's all I'll have to say about that. I'm pretty sure Kerry (being educated) would have figured out the 911 hijackers were not from Iraq simply by reading the newpapers.

OK, I also rule discussions on Florida voting booths and the merits of various candidates for public office out of order.

Take it over to the Off Topic Forum, please!! Smile

No big deal...we only submitted two entrees...one in Ceremony coverage and the other in highlights (which I'm sure is steep competition) so I truly didn't expect to see our name on the list....however I never expected to see the name of one company in five different categories. Who knows maybe the paid for and submitted hundreds of entrees to land those odds of winning in 5 categories. Maybe they're just that good!

It's actually kind of refreshing to see so many new names up there in the awards roster especially Jason M, Joshua Smith, etc. I remember that Randy said something about not entering now. Totally slipped my mind. I missed you guys in Vegas. Hope to see you at the other convention in a few months.

We had a very light year last year due to the construction of our new house. I took such a personal interest in it that I really put the business on hold for a year (only did like 5-6 weddings all year).

Look out next year though. I'm working on next years award winner now. This was such a great couple -- I can't wait to put up some clips for you guys to look at.

Isn't (A) a violation of the rules? I thought it had to be exactly what the client received.

You would think but I guarantee that there is a few tweaks, VO, After Effects that get added into many entrees and I'm sure they don't really verify anything with the clients. They'd have to mail the submission to the client and say "get back to us if there is anything different in this version compared to the one you got." Don't believe that's happening.

maybe Bluecore ran out of space on their walls and couldn't enter until they expand their studio! ;)

I thought that the winning Florida video was very good, certainly much better then the samples they show. I also agree that I've seen clips here that I like better.
