Weddings with Style Can't Post

Awhile back I posted a bride prep clip that some found too
artsy, fancy, smancy. It was, but I didn't change anything
about it and the bride loved it, blah, blah, blah.
That's what it's all about anyway right?
But yáll got me thinking that maybe perhaps I do concentrate
too much on the "art" of the shoot/edit. I just can't help it.
I still do shoot for the "art" of the moment but I'm also
in a state of change in my way of shooting and editing.
As well we should always be evolving into a better shooter,
a better editor....to create a more emotionally charged
montage.
Which is what seems to be the selling point of my work.

Recently we shot a high end wedding that is going to be the
subject of a feature article in one of the wedding magazines
we advertise in.
The bride used all vendors who advertise in this magazine with
the exception of the band.
When the owner of the magazine saw that artsy bride prep I posted a couple of weeks ago she asked if we could
create something like that for her website with the featured bride's wedding on it.
So I threw the posted video together and sent her the link
this morning. She wanted a 1 minute piece but I guess I got carried away again. It's 1 min. 22 secs.
Waiting to hear her response.
The owner loves the idea of having video on her website but is afraid of it too, thinking that bride's won't be able to view the video and leave her website, so when all is done, the bride who clicks on the video on her site will be directed to our site.
How cool will that be?
Hoping it will be as cool as I think it will be.
Her magazine caters to the high end bride.
So the video posted is not anything perfect or anything I would enter in a video contest, it's just eye candy for the bride
whose life is consumed with her wedding day.

Very nice. Just curious, do you use a steadicam or stabilizer?

--And beeootiful eye candy it is, too! Congrats, Terry, this looks like a fabulous marketing tool for you. Only two very minor technical comments: To me, the cut from the opening "spiraling" shot was jarring. Would a longer opening shot, or a dissolve transition, smooth it out? And the shot of the rings on the cloth...it was kind of hard to see they were wedding rings because of the angle. They needed more light, too, for sparkle. A very hard "product" shot to get at a reception, 'tis true!
If you need to cut material, I'd think about trimming or losing some of the opening shots...the ones before the shot of the magazine. They look fine, but the later ones are even better.
Regards and Admiration,
Doug Graham

Hey Terry... [In reply to] Can't Post

Great work as usual Terry!
How do you get the "cool" flower shots? Are you using a steady cam device?
Same for the sun/tree shot?
Very nice...you are truly a leader in this industry!

I have a steady tracker or whatever it's called but my arm isn't strong enough to get good enough shots, so it sits in my trunk.
Maybe one day I'll bulk up and use it.
For some of those shots I'm holding the vx2000 above the flowers and just panning from one side to the other. I do it several times until I believe I get the smooth movement that I know I'll use.
For the sun through the trees, I rested the bottom end of the vx2000 on my right hip holding the cam lens toward the tree tops and panned again. did that shot several times also.
All shots with LCD open.
I don't think I can remember when was the last time I shot
through the viewfinder.
I do get myself and my camera in the oddest positions and I'm sure some folks look at me and think I'm weird (which is correct :-), but I know when they see the video they'll think
to themselves...."aaaahhh now I see what she was doing."
And perhaps they'll really really really enjoy the video.

I am always in such awe of your work: your smoothe transitions, your great close-ups and your steady movements.
Would you mind going through it with us again on how you accomplish that "signature" flash effect that you use. I am trying to accomplish it in something I am working on now but don't seem to be getting that same effect.
Good luck on the marketing with this clip! It is, as always, very impressive.
Respectfully,
Tammy

Hi Terry,
Great clip. What series of effects di you use onm the storm to get the bright white light or shine through the bride's vail in that black & white shot during the ceremony.

-------------------
did I say I used the storm to create that montage?
I'm sorry if I did, I actually edited it in Premiere 6.5 w/Canopus Storm2 card.
but anyway, that effect was actually accidental, as most of my effects are discovered that way anyway,
On every single clip was slo mo, sometimes 25% but mostly 50%,
AND I go into "old movie" effect, turn off all effects
EXCEPT under -Interlace effect- I choose -Blend-.
in my opinion it adds a smoothness to the slo mo
AND
I choose -Border Darkening- at 64.
2nd Filter:
Soft Focus @
Radius @ 20
Blur @ 45
Brightness @ 0
THEN,
I place the -Region- filter on the clip(s),
I adjust the size of the filter to highlight the subject I choose, i.e. the bride,
INSIDE REGION choose COLOR CORRECTION
and set Chroma @ 0, Bright @ 35, Contrast @ 23
OUTSIDE REGION choose HIGH QUALITY BLUR set @ 5
REGION is set with soft edge @ 50
and then of course the monochromatic filter makes it b&w.
So with all those filters combined, you get "that look".
When I find an effect that works, I simply copy and paste it to the next clip, and so on and so on, sometimes individually adjusting certain filters on that particular clip.
Make any sense?
With the Canopus Storm card I have teensy rendering or none at all depending on how heavy I am with the filters.

Flash [In reply to] Can't Post

Tammy wrote: Would you mind going through it with us again on how you accomplish that "signature" flash effect that you use. I am trying to accomplish it in something I am working on now but don't seem to be getting that same effect.
---------------
Greetings Tammy,
In Premiere 6.5 I create "color matte" white.
Bring it to Video 2 Track or above (any track with transparency),
open track and adjust the opacity to start out as 100% then bring down to 0%.
Make the matte 1 sec. (30 frames)
This will cause the white to "flash" then absolve itself.
You can be creative and use 10 - 14 frame mattes to create
a flashier effect.
Be sure to place 100% opacity section at the beginning of your
clip, or anywhere you desire the flash effect, i.e. right on the beat if you prefer.
Hope to see you in Vegas.
Terry T.

Where's the Groom? I know the focus of the wedding day is the bride and all
but I didn't find one close up of the groom's face. Make's the bride a bit selfish
looking. Nice but too much like a J-Lo video for my tastes (half naked groom
and all).

Inspired by Terry [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Terry,
You inspired me. The local wedding mag
had run a "Win your own wedding contest"
during the 2003 bridal shows. I never made
it to one since I didn't start my biz up
in time. Anyway, I was looking at the list
of things the bride won on the website and
guess what was missing?
I couldn't believe that not one videographer
offered to be part of the contest. (Yes, she
won a photographer). Anyway, I immediately
e-mailed the wedding mag lady and offered
to be included.
Then I read your post and
offered to do a video of the winner, sort
of a mini love story, documenting the big
win and stuff. The wedding mag woman is
ecstatic and can't wait. So is the bride,
who is now getting a free Love Story segment
on top of it all.
I'll let you all know when the segment is
done. I plan to shoot it and finish it within
the next 2 months.
Thanks again Terry.
-Cesar
