What method of archiving do you use/recommend? Can't Post

Hello! I don't post often but I am in need of advice. My completed videos usually run about 2 hours. I am trying to come up with the best way to archive them. We currently average about 40 weddings per year.I am trying to make my current operation run more smoothly, any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Re: What method of archiving do you use/recommend? Can't Post

LOL... here's a good one.... DONT!!!
I have the same situation at my place... A lot of weddings we make straight dvd copies off a panasonic dmr-t2020 (650$) and use the straight copies of the edit masters as samples to show customers when they want to see "that hall" or "that church" or "their type of people"... Just incase a recent customer needs an additional copy or fix something thatway I have a high end copy to use for the dub...
But we master to either dvcam or svhs depending on the package. And make copies off of them...
The customer is notified when they p/u the edit that the tapes will be recycled since its on digital media in 4 weeks after they p/u the tapes... So after 4 weeks we can't do dvd or fix something in their edited masters...
They can buy copies of the digital tapes at $85 per 2 hours of footage onto dvd incase we ever need to re-edit the tapes down the road...
This way the customer makes it worth our while to make those backups... rather than what we used to do and make vhs copies for all dvcam/mini dv tapes and would lock up my decks...
I agree it becomes a tough call to "get rid" of their tapes but when you have tapes from 92 sitting in a garage and never heard from the people in 11 years... I doubt they will be calling for those tapes...

Give the writen notice to your customers a try explaining that they can buy the footage if they wish as a backup for themselves and in even videography/news gathering it is custom to reuse dv tapes b/c they are so expensive and built for reuse and its a normal practice. (Friends of mine work at the major news stations here in NYC and they even reuse the dvcpro tapes until they wont play anymore!!!!)
I rarely get a customer now looking to buy the footage.
