What settings do I tweak for silhouette shot with the PD150? Can't Post

My Sony PD150 is usually in automatic mode. I got a beautiful silhouette shot at a bridal prep before the camera adjusted the exposure on me.
What settings should I switch to manual mode in order to shoot a silhouette for as long as I would like?

Thank you

What you'll probably have to do is expose for the background (point it to the background and lock in the settings), then reframe your subject.

Is this Jenny or Marco?

Anyways ... you need to first lock the shutter and gain and then
dial the iris wheel.

It's Marco

Brackish, what settings would you recommend for the shutter, gain and iris?

Thanks

Hi Marco,

I would start out by locking the gain at 0 dB, shutter at 60 and if it is bright enough, the neutral density on 2. You want to avoid closing down the iris too much. If you have your iris on f/5.6- f/11 any little specs of dust or smudges on the lens will show up, but you may not see it in the LCD screen on your camera. If it is so bright that you have to close down your iris smaller than f/5.6, then increase your shutter speed to darken the picture. If you can get your iris opened up to f/2, then you can get that really nice shallow depth of field look and at the same time, guarantee you will not have any specs of dust show up in the shot.

Thanks Mark. That explanation was very helpful.

Except I'm not sure what the neutral density is?

Hi Marco,

Neutral Density is marked "ND" on your lens barrel. It is next to the switch that sets the focus in auto or manual. ND 2 darkens the shot more than ND 1.

Blush I know exactly what your talking about, I only knew it by ND1 and ND2. I never realized what the initials stood for.

Thanks

Hey, Marco.

To get this straight ... once the camera adjusted the exposure on
you, the bride's face went dark? And you wanted it to stay
brighter? Or you wanted the bride to be dark and just
see her outline?

What was the background? A window behind her?

No, I was shooting the bride in front of the window from her waist up.
She was all dark (silhouette) in front of the window, shortly after that the camera self adjusted and lit her.

And you wanted her to stay dark, right?

Play your footage back, turn on the data (found on your remote control) and watch the footage and it will show you the settings for that particular shot. That doesn't mean that's the right settings for all situations, but it's a starting place.

Marco,

Is this a staged shot where you've got time to fool with the
camera? Or are you shootin' on the fly?
