Wireless mic woes Can't Post

Hello,
I just found this site and it's great! I am relatively new to the wedding video business (done 4 weddings so far). I am having a lot of problems with wireless mics during the ceremony (ie, the sound is blanking out--getting interference from DJ equipment, PA system, who knows what else...) I use a Sony PDX10 camera with a Samson 32 receiver/transmitter. I have done a search for this problem already, and apologize if it's already been posted. Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks in advance.

Re: Wireless mic woes Can't Post

Blair,
This is radio frequency interference. The DJ and the church PA system are using the same frequency as your wireless. This is double plus ungood.
Your only solution is to change the transmitter to a frequency that no one else is using. That's why the unit has 32 channels! Be sure to change the receiver to the same setting.
Avoiding interference with the church PA system is one reason we attend the rehearsal...to check for conflicts.
If you are in an area that's got so many users on UHF that you can't find a free channel, your only choice is to get a minidisc recorder and substitute it for the wireless.
Regards,

Re: Wireless mic woes [In reply to] Can't Post

Doug,
Thanks for your response. We have thought about attending the rehearsals and now I think we should start doing it. The last wedding we did the audio was fine up until the last minute and, unfortunately, I didn't have time to change the channels on the transmitter and receiver. I will also look into getting a minidisc recorder. Thanks again for your help.

I wouldn't count on rehearsal attendance helping much. I have yet to attend a rehearsal where the "sound guy" was there. Usually, they show up just before the ceremony and crank things up. I don't use a minidisk, I double up on the wireless mikes. Two vastly different frequencies (600MHz and 900MHz) so usually if one has interference, the other is OK.

I use the same mike system you use and sometimes it goes out for no apparent reason. I now double mic the groom with a Sony mini disk. All grooms so far have like the double mics!
Make sure you get a mini disk player with a mic jack! They are making some of the cheaper ones now without mic inputs and the line input will not work with a lav!

You definitely should attend the rehearsal, but dont count on that to solve your sound woes with the church system. As was already mentioned here, the "sound guy" is almost never there until the ceremony and nobdy else seems to know anything about the system. Minidisc is the best backup.
