YEEESSS!!! - no more tape...!!!! Can't Post

Well..other than buying some tape for my HC5s to use as an occasional tripod cam, !I am officially tapeless. I just bought my second EX1 and I am scared shiteless.

LaughLaugh

No seriously, its exciting but it will be a little scary at first but I think I have a pretty good game plan. (I will be explaining what that is in the very near future)

Now go buy all my V1 and other stuff listed for sale at the Trading Post so i can buy some food for my starving kids.

I keed. They LOVE Top Ramen.

Congratulations! I wonder if this is how all the photographers felt when they went from film to digital. (My pictures are being saved WHERE?)

I can only hope to get to reach that tapeless goal at some point in time. I hate tape.

Scary, but the future my friend. I think it is going to be great to finally be rid of tapes.

Kenneth has a point, Daniel, with 35 weddings in your backlog, are you going to just start buying hard drives and backup hard drives for all of your weddings? (EDIT: I see you're going to use DL DVD's!)

Actually, since I'm trying to get out of the editing business, and focus on doing minimally edited cheap videos, recording flash cards is very appealling. Since I have about 36 hours to get the video edited, burned, and dropped off at the post office, CF cards would save me a couple of hours of capturing tape...which normally isn't an issue with weddings in the backlog that can be captured while doing other stuff. I guess I'll wait until the low-end HDV cameras start using CF cards. Probably won't be long!

Dan, have you ever used a Firestore drive? If you have can you tell me what ones. I'd like to go tapeless with my FX1's and eventually go all tapeless myself.

Yes..used one for about 1 week with my V1s and it didn't work well with that camera so i sent it back. It was the big one..I forget the model number but it was like around $1800.

Re: [RustyB] YEEESSS!!! - no more tape...!!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

I honestly don't care if i had to spend more money on HDs than i ever have on tape. I freaking hate tapes. Period. Cool

That being said, i have over 6TB of space spread out over internal and external drives in eSATA and various RAID configurations and it didn't cost me all that much to be quite honest. HD space is dirt cheap these days and only getting cheaper.

I have 3 back-ups of all of my EX1 footage shot so far and also DL DVD backups. Once BR disks come WAY down , i will start using those.

As far as the footage piling up this upcoming year, I figure it is around 100 GBs of space that each wedding will take up ( I have only shot "half" weddings with them so far) which means over 6TB of space and DL DVDs should be more than enough to get me through this year.

Add to that the fact that I have quite a few SDE Onlys this year. This means i will not have to worry about any backup at all. Just get home, burn RAW DVDs and be done with it.

What do you do if you have two or three weddings in a weekend? Will you dump the footage off late at night when you get home, what if you have a computer problem? Also what if you have a double day? I'm just wondering your plan because i'm not sure what i would do?

Not doing 2-3 wedding weekends this year. I never do two in one day. Ever.

As i told you in our conversations, I dump and backup throughout the day for SDEs so it is no different for me even if i did do that many. Macs don't have problems, you should know that. Angelic

Seriously though, I havent had a serious computer problem since i don't know when but everything is backed up to HD anyways. If i havent even backed it up yet and it goes down..i have an iMac i bring to every wedding for backup.

Me too Monday. Tapes havent given me much problems over the yearS with dropouts or stuff like that. ( i only use tapes once and regularly cleaned my heads on cam) I love that you have the safety of always having a back-up.

Its the importing i hate about tapes. I hate staring at this huge case of tapes to edit. i cant wait til my backlog gets tO my EX stuff!

Good for you, Daniel.

However, for me, capturing tape is the easiest thing in the whole process. While I'm editing one wedding, I'm simply inserting 4-8 tapes on another computer and hitting 'capture'. I wish the rest of the process was that simple and easy.

I did get tired of capturing MiniDisc audio back in the day. That was another few hours that I preferred not to sit through.

Re: [Daniel] YEEESSS!!! - no more tape...!!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey Daniel...That is very cool. Congrats on the second camera. I am equally happy with my EX1 and have been really pushing HD video instead of SD pieces. I believe within the next 2 years SD coverage and delivery will be associated with a second string of vendors. My experience so far has been that almost all of our brides have widescreen HD televisions and when asked, want their wedding video to be future proofed in HD. They want it delivered now in widescreen SD and copies burned in blue-ray for the immediate future. It's becoming more obvious everyday that HD is the new format, so much so that I have resigned myself to acccept the fact that my 2 DVX100s will end up boat anchors along with my old betacam sp camera. I'm just blessed to have covered their cost along the way. I'll probably donate them to a school, etc. BTW check out the extended warranty for the EX1, I just sent mine in. $159.00 3 year coverage...it's a steal.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/...tended_Warranty.html
Also, there is a new matte box on the horizon that will work with the EX1. I've seen the prototype and it's very well done and extremely affordable...as in under $700. I'll keep you posted when I hear more about it's release date.
Talk soon, Best, Craig

You better calm down that HD rhetoric or you will be accused of using HD as a crutch to pass off your 2nd rate videos as top notch.

Don't you know that no brides are asking for it? WinkWinkWink

The point I that I was making with brides when asked "Would you like you wedding video shot in Standard Definition or High Definition and should you select High Definition we can also burn it to Blu-ray disc as well as Standard Definition DVD", they almost always choose High Definition.
Also, you don't need a crystal ball to see that the majority of televisions sold today are widescreen HD, the defacto standard for HD delivery is BluRay disc and more than likely within the next 2 years a large amount of young consumers will be shooting baby's first steps in HD. Consequently, is it any surprise that given a choice, they would select HD over SD for a video that hopefully they will enjoy for years to come?
Best, Craig

That post was 100% sarcasm, because I have been accused of using HD as a crutch. There was no malicious intent, I swear.

Re: [Kenneth] YEEESSS!!! - no more tape...!!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

Not a problem, Sorry as well if I over reacted also. Hey, I was originally from Fort Lee, NJ...and my first words were go #$%^ yourself! LOL.

I think the HD thing is going to be a costly one for vendors. I saw it happen in post houses during the early 90's when desktop video drove large firms like Editel and Post Perfect in NYC out of business along with pennies on the dollar for sale of their D-2 digital decks, etc. We used to post our commercials there when we lived in CT.
On the other hand, I face a market here in Key West with several vendors who shoot with very low cost DV palmcorders. The product is, to be kind, amaturish and by the time the bride is back in Cleavland, it's too late to complain. It's possible, at least for a while, the switch to HD may shake out some of the fly by night vendors until they start getting low cost HD gear as the prices come down. Who knows.
Anyway sorry for the reply, but it at least did get me fired up on a Saturday morning. I have a 6 hour shoot later today and we are currently having a squall...but no snow LO>
Best, Craig
