crying....no, sobbing groom Can't Post

Wedding Saturday and the couple read some stuff that they had written for each other. Well, the groom was choked up for the entire service, but when it came time for him to read his little note, he completely broke down. I don't mean just tears, I mean sobbing. It took him FOREVER to get through that. I guess it's touching and all that, but what I'm concerned with is the sound. Without getting too graphic here, let's just say that his tear ducts and nasal passages were quite connected. When he cried, his nose ran horribly. That meant on the mic, I got lots and lots of sniffing and....well, you fill in the blanks for yourselves. But trust me, it sounds AWFUL! Finally, someone handed him a handkerchief, thank god, which made it a little better.
Now, my question is: Do I leave it as is? Or do I edit out all the blubbering and "nose-running and sniffing problems" and such.
What do y'all think?

Why not ask the B&G what they would do, you might consider showing them the footage before your final edit.
My guess is, they will want it. As for the rest of the ceremony, did you have another mic on the officiant? That should minimize the sniffle factor. And yes, I am sure most of us have experienced this.

Yuk! that just sounds embarrassing. I think it calls for a tasteful mute, careful editing and maybe a short piece in slo-mo to some nice music or v.o.

my wedding last weekend, everyone cried. it took up too much time and
my stationary camera ran out of tape. Just remember, if the couple is
emotional, always record on LP!

I'd do what I could to make the groom look (sound) better, while not losing the emotion of the moment. Some ways that might work:
- lower the volume during the icky sounding parts.
- possibly dub in a background music track, and bring up the volume some to help cover the snorting.
- Dub in repeats of less icky-sounding (but still sobs, not distinct words) parts of the audio track. Be careful to avoid continuity errors.
- If the poor fellow takes a very long time to get it together, consider editing out repetitive material. Leave enough in to make it clear it was an emotional moment for him.

Doug Graham

DVDs are great for this [In reply to] Can't Post

We had this and this is what we did and the couple LOVED it. We made them a DVD. In the ceremony we showed a tear go down his face. Then we cut the blubbering out. We then added "Kris Cries" to their "deleted scenes" on the DVD. The copies the parents got did not have him blubbering. He really liked that, because he did not want people making fun of him. The bride liked having it because she wanted to remember the emotions of the moment!

The video I'm editing right now has a bride that totally broke down into sobs. I'll leave it all in because that's what happened and what they will remember.
