hdv preview out Can't Post

My graphics card has dvi output, but Im using vegas 7, and I cant preview mt2 files out to tv. What card do I need to have to do this, or is this a function only of the software and file type?

Thanks!!

If you preview out via firewire you'll get DV out. For HD out, you need to either use the "Secondary Monitor" option or one of the specialized cards that output SDI.

Re: [Edward] hdv preview out [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for replying Ed!! Do you mean that I should be able to preview out in dv through firewire as if the timeline wasnt hd files? I see the sdi cards are very expensive. I dont care if Im looking at hd on the monitor I just want to edit hd on the timeline and be able to see it on a monitor, are you saying that vegas should preview this? Is it supposed to take the hd timeline and preview it out in dv, because this is not working. Is the secondary monitor option part of vegas or my graphics card software?

Thanks

Well I guess that's one thing FCP has over Vegas- the ability to output HDV via firewire for preview. Well, it doesn't really output HDV persay- it downconverts it on the fly rather. Either way...works quite well, so long as it's 60i and not 24p/f content.

If you had Vegas8 then your best bet would be to purchase an Intensity Pro card.
It gives you the option to preview HDV footage via HDMI to a HMDI monitor or tv set. Or you can use the analog S-Video RCA audio connections for preview on external monitor.
Also, the Intensity Pro card will currently ONLY work with Vegas8 not Vegas7 or lower.
But it does work and well. I use it with both Vegas8 and FCP6 on a Quad core Mac Pro via WinXP and Bootcamp.

Michael, in Orlando I spoke with the guy at the booth about the Intensity Pro. He said it will work in Vegas but its not supported... that's fine. My question is, (since you use it) does it actually output HD even with the filters and fx being used? How is the framerate during playback? If in fact it does output 1080 HD, I will get one when I build my Quad machine in the next month or so.

That's EXACTLY what Vegas does as well.

Yeah Jerome, Black magic has said in the past that they don't support Vegas, because Vegas won't open up their coding to them.
The Intensity does support 1080i HD via HDMI. However it won't be at full frame rate, I don't remember what frame rate it is. It will output even with filters, just the same as if you wree using FW external preview. The speed and quality will depend on the display quality you chose.
I mainly use it for color correction purposes only via HDMI if I'm worried about having to go HD for output.
Most of the time, I go out via the Intensity Pro's component out to my SD production monitor for real time down rezed HD to s preview.

I also really loved the Intensity because I was able to ingest HDV footage via FCP and HDMI to Prores or DVCHDPRO codecs. I am in a migration (slow mind you) to switch from Vegas to FCP. I purchased a 2.66 Quad core last year and have bee running both via WINXP and Bootcamp. I love having the best of both worlds available.

If you have no need for analog SD out then just pickup the Intensity for HDMI ingest and preview.
