There are cleaners made especially for DVDs, that don't leave a residue. More important is the motion you use to clean them. Most manufacturers recommend a radial motion, from the center toward the edges, rather than a circular motion. Discwasher makes a little machine that automatically produces the correct motion.

Scratches and dirt/fingerprints [In reply to] Can't Post

Doug.....have you used these gizmos regularly and do they work well??? Do they scratch at all???
SHort story -- I recently went to blockbuster to rent a movie.....after spending 15 minutes looking for something taht my 3.5 year old son could watch as well (with him in tow...talk about FUN!), I went to the counter and checked out....On my way out I decided to check the disk...all scratches and looked like someone left PIZZA SAUCE on it.....yum.
So I went back in and pointed this out.....turns out the second copy they had had the SAME PROBLEMS.....
I complained and they said "Well, we send disks back to be resurfaced if anyone complains about the playback." I got my money back and left.....bummed out....if all they need to do is run it through a gizmo like this why dont they!???!??!!?!?!
SO, now, I look at all my discs even closer than ever.....I was thinking about one of these gizmos but worried that they could cause more damage than they fix.....
Thoughts?

My Discwasher CD gizmo works fine, and doesn't scratch the disc or dribble pizza sauce on it (that's rumored as a feature in Version 2.0) :-)
I haven't tried the OTHER popular CD gizmo, the one that looks like a turbine and is supposed to remove scratches.

This is true about not wiping (the DVD ... that is) in a circular motion.
You may actually create scratch tracks and the laser will have diffilculty staying aligned. If a scratch is created the other way from the inner small hole to the outer part of the disc, the laser can recover easier and correct it's path.
I usually use the bottom of my fist (the part of your hand that makes baby foot prints...obscure desription, I know) and wipe debree off from the inner hole to the outer wide part. Skin is non-obrasive as long as your hands are clean. If there's sticky crap on there like pizza sauce than maybe I'll have to try the discwasher gadget. I fixed my sister VCR once and found a whole Ritz cracker inside and some cereal, so I can Imagine how pizza gets on Disney movies! (-:
