music Can't Post

I'm reading all these messages and viewing these video's with all sorts of background music for a photo shoots and so on. Many of the songs are familiar artists...
How have you been getting around the copywrights?
... Gary

Gary,
Just curious, how do you know anyone is "getting around the copyrights"?

Tim, surely you know that most, if not all, event videographers who use popular music are doing so in violation of the copyright laws. In most cases, this isn't out of a deliberate desire to break the law, but out of economic necessity; there are no procedures in place to allow this kind of use to be licensed at a fair price.
So, while your comment is valid (Gary DOESN'T "know"), it's nitpicking. It's a 99.97% certainty that the folks Gary is referring to ARE "getting around the copyrights".
Regards,
Doug Graham

Nitpicking? Nah, not really. BUT, based on how you put it, I guess I should have replied, "What rock did you just crawl out from under"? ; ) It isn't like this subject hasn't been covered around here, yes?
Carrying on.....

Using the music without proper permission is illegal.
However...
There is no easy way to obtain the rights for something as small as an individual's wedding. Even if you have the best of intentions, it's not worth the time for a recording artist and / or publishing company to work out the deal.
To put it into perspective - Imagine you wanted to hire an artist to paint Disney characters on your children's wall. This is clearly a violation of Disney's copyrights. But it wouldn't make economic sense for Disney to work out a deal. Just the time alone to draw up the paperwork would cost more then it's worth. So, officialy I would imagine that Disney's response would be 'No'. But *off the record*, I can't imagine that they care if a kid has Mickey Mouse painted on his nursery wall.
It's too bad that there doesn't seem to be an easy solution to this issue.

Just a quick comment ...
Normally I don't get involved in the constant questions regarding music and copyright issues. Everyone deals with them in their own way.
However ... if there is one company out there I would never cross it's Disney. Now I'm not talking about mom and dad painting a wall, but I know that Disney has set up stores in a "sting-like" situation when it comes to even small things like cake decorating.
A mom and child will walk into a store with a Disney character image and ask the people to trace it for them on a cake. If you do, you're screwed.

Re: music [In reply to] Can't Post

I was watching some of the demo's people post and the music behind them... Some of it's great music, some of it very familiar, some say if the bride and groom give you the CD they'll put it on there...
I know the subject has been beat to death but I keep trying to find a way to do what I see others doing yet I can't find a way and it sort of gripes me that I see great work that I myself can't ethically do. I'm stuck with the royalty free music that I can purchase... It's good music for the royalty free music but I wish I could use some familiar songs that you hear on the radio...
Just last night I was looking at some demo's (not wedding) and someone used Star Wars theme music!
I wish we had the availability of some sort of license like clubs use from BMI that allows you to legally play music in a club...
