price for dvd option, as opposed to vhs??? Can't Post

just got a new philips dvd recorder 985 model. i'd like to start offering dvd's to future clients. i'd like to know if everyone else is offering dvd copies for a higher price. might there be an average price for the dvd option, among everyone here? might it be $50 higher? $25 higher? more? i'd like to make my money back, as with any business purchase, so i'd like to think if i charge a small fee for this option, that i'll be able to keep up with my investment return. might this be the wrong way to approach it? any advise from you pros, will be appreciated.
thanks, john.

I actually charge less for dvd because
1. I can write them quicker
2. It avoids the customer doing diy copies
3. I am going to drop vhs as an option from next month.

I'm with you on that. i'm about to change my packages to only DVD. If they ask for a VHS i'll sub one for them. On my demo request page they can pick either DVD or VHS. 99% pick DVD.

Be very careful on the assuming no copy issue. I have found twice in the last six months that projects that I normall would get orders for several tapes from got none. I found out that the person ordering the project took the DVD and using his stand alone DVD player made VHS copies for everyone. I am going to increase my prices for DVD to anticipate this loss of revenue.

What I should have said is that I already include a large fee for the creation of the dvd menu and have built in price rises so that the standard package gives them 3 copies. It is further copies that I do for a small profit so it is not worth their time pirating.

I charge $50 for DVD authoring. My basic prices are really low so for me it's a way to raise my price without raising my price since most customers willl get the DVD's. I dont have packages but have a base rate then there are add on options like DVD, Photo Montage, Love Story Interviews, Reception shoot, etc.

DVDs are super easy to copy especially if they don't have copy protection. All you need is a DVD burner, and Pinnacle Instant Copy. You don't even need DVD decrypter if it's not copyright protected like the Hollywood DVDs are.

I give 1 copy on DVD and 2 on VHS with all my packages. However, if they want some extra copies I would probably throw it in or do it for very cheap because the more people that see my work the more people that will talk about my work and the more my name gets out there! Advertising baby, pure and simple.

Wal mart? [In reply to] Can't Post

I just read a post from a bride on one of the bridal forums telling everybody not to order a DVD from your Videographer, but to order an extra VHS and take it to Wal Mart and have them transfer it to DVD for $19.00.

While an option, they have to remember:
1. VHS quality vs a DVD from the original master
2. Personalized Chapter points
3. Personalized menus

Re: Wal mart? [In reply to] Can't Post

This has been discussed by brides before and just shows what they don't really know. That is Walmart and Walgreens both use YesVideo. YesVideo will NOT produce a DVD that is professionally done without a release from the video company.
I know people that have attempted to try this and it's been returned. Yesvideo even resonded to a thread on the WEVA boards about producing videos for Walmart.
I'm not saying that no one can sneak one through, but I have to give the company high marks for turning them away. ALSO ... Walmart and Walgreens (at least around here) are pretty good at stopping brides from reproducing wedding photos as well.
Anyway ... don't worry about it. As noted, some of them aren't sharp enough to know that all they're doing is making a digital copy of VHS. In their minds if it's on DVD it will look better. My clients know their DVDs come straight from the computer.
My prices start at $1700 for a small rural area (2-cam, 6 hours) and the DVDs are built in. Of course if they want VHS too they can have 'em.
