sales tax on destination weddings Can't Post

about to book my first out-of-country destination wedding, and i have a few questions.

do i charge sales tax? it's in nevis, west indies.

do i need a work visa, or am i a friend of the family?

what else do i need to consider? it's just me, and i'm shooting super8 film only.

Hi Chris,

Not sure about the other issues but in Wisconsin I am not required to collect state sales tax if the video is delivered out of state even if it was shot here. Just check with your state's web site for how it's handled.

I'm not sure about the sales tax issue. Call your state tax office.

BUT I would go as a family friend, not a working pro. Especially since you won't be bringing plenty of gear. You don't want the hassles, liabilities and possible fees going through the 'working' channels.

Hi Jones, Go as a family friend. You don't want any customs or work visa headaches. How much gear are you taking? If it's minimal then don't worry. As for taxes - as your accountant.

I live in California. When I shoot out of the country for a California resident, I charge sales tax. When I shoot out of California for a non-resident of California and make delivery outside of California, I do not charge sales tax.

When I shoot and/or make delivery in California, I charge sales tax.

Technically you need a work visa whenever you work in another country. Photographers have been refused entry into the US and other countries when they stated they were entering the country to shoot a wedding.

I have only obtained a visa once and that was for a shoot in Russia. The rest of the time, I travel as a tourist and never say anything during my travels to cause people to think anything different.

Steve,
Someday I will have to tell you about a videographer in our market who doesn't charge sales tax because he doesn't believe in itCrazy
He uses that in his sales presentations.
