shooting editing costs Can't Post

how much would you split you prices between shooting and editing for example 50% shooting 50% editing?

Not sure what you mean by that, but if you're trying to determine profit ratios, consider the time spent packing to driving to filming to capturing to editing to output to delivery, and all business-related consumables, variables, and constants. In general, and this will vary a lot, the average wedding that I do, I'd say I'm out filming 20-25% of the total hours required to complete the entire project.

That's about right. 10 hours of shooting comes to about 30 hours of editing. Unless you are trying to be Joshua Smith who said in his seminar that sometimes he spends as much as 120 hours editing a video.

what i mean is, if you had to distribute the cost into 2 categories (shooting the wedding, and editing it) say a $1500 wedding, personally I would say 30% of the cost is shooting and the 70% of the cost is editing... how would you split your cost?

If you're basing this on the question of....what should someone be paid to either film or edit a project, that's quite different than when referring to the entire element simply because when running a real business, and I'm stating real because many folks don't seem to have a clue of what they're doing, there are many more factors than just filming and editing...thus, I can't give you any numbers based on those two categories by themselves, as I also factor in the time spent emailing the client, making phone calls to the client, doing all of the artwork and other things, going to my stockroom and getting cases and such and remedial office-related things associated with the particular project...it all adds up, and when looking at the business expenses to that of what it really takes in terms of time to complete a project, it's really not so simplistic between just filming and editing. I know that doesn't answer your inquire directly, but what can I say!

Oh, and if were to base it on a 25% ratio between filming and 75% editing, with a cost of, say, $2000, then $500 filming, $1500 editing......I state that solely based on my original post.

I'm certainly no Joshua Smith, but I doubt I've ever spent anything less then at the very least 100 hours editing any wedding.

See, the problem with this model is that you assume your package price has two components: how much it costs to shoot and how much it costs to edit. If you really get serious about this, you have to factor in a whole lot more than that.

Let's look at some specifics...

1. Do you spend time marketing yourself? Do you spend time in pre-production doing interviews with the clients or having preliminary meetings before the sale or after the sale but before the wedding? That's an expense that needs to be accounted for.

2. What about the equipment? You need to factor in a slice of the cost of your editing equipment and your cameras in every wedding you do. Those could be considered the cost of editing or the cost of shooting but I'm making an assumption that's not what you meant.

3. What about after it's edited? You need to factor in the time it takes to create the DVD menu, graphics, packaging, etc.

4. What about those variable expenses like the cost of batteries or DVD media? What bucket would you have those fall in?

My point is just that when I read your question I interpreted it to mean how much do you pay you (or other people) to shoot and how much do you pay for editing? If you think the information will help you then I'll answer this way. If you take the salary we pay our editors and the salary we pay our shooters then it's about 75% for editing and 25% for shooting. That doesn't take into account the graphic artist salary, office help salary, profit that actually increases the value of the company, etc.

It's a very complicated process so I guess I'd want to know what your goal is by knowing this information.

Geez Ron. 100 hours? Dude, at least your honest.

I'm sure I've had a few of those but mine are down to about 45 now (not counting naps, breaks for sex and drinking binges). That's mainly because I still shoot so much damned footage.

Yeah, I'm not sure where honesty has really gotten me after all these years, but...

Anyway, I guess it takes me twice as long as everyone else to produce a decent video. Maybe I just try to hard.?? Unsure

I'm getting ready to start a new edit and will be tracking every minute of my time via AceProject so I'll let you know for sure how much time I spend on an edit. It might not be as much because these are my last 2 weddings of 2007, an October and a December wedding. I got to find some short cuts. Crazy

Use one camera. Laugh

The best and "worst" thing I ever did was go to 3.

I'm thinking 1 camera would be twice as much work. Maybe my thinking is all backwards? It's the 70's that did it to me. Crazy
