I am often asked how I approach longform reality shows as an editor. With no other content is there MORE content. We often shoot several hours and wind up with a good 6 minute piece and there is no way around watching every frame that was shot.
...unless ya shot it.

Aint a thang wrong with going from memory and skipping stuff you know ya don't need. Now, you'll end up needing something and spend more time going back to the tape than if ya just threw it all in the computer but drive space does'nt always allow the freedom to grab all that was shot. Grab what you think you may need and begin the shot-scrapping process upon capturing.

Now, I start with putting every single usable shot on a timeline. I don't care that I may make a 50 minute timeline for what will be a 10 minute segment. If it's at all in the running as a keep of a shot... it stays, this pass.

Now, I am seeing the story...at least according to what I have. It's now that I'll decide if more story needs telling and I'll mentally make way for voice over, graphics or whatever I may need to do that.

I go from the top again , starting to add b-roll and I rearrange shots as needed to follow this story line. I discard many shots that were good but not quite flowing with this developing storyline.

Now, that 50 minute timeline is probably closer to 20 and is developing it's personality. Every piece has it's personality. You can create it but it's magical when it creates itself and you get to follow it, not lead it. It'll tell you what pacing it wants, the flavor of music it needs, and the color treatments that will bring it all together. Listen close. Each piece will talk to you.

Time for some polishing. Music is now added and all dialog is now cut to time so our final piece is that 10 minutes we were after.
Sweet. My favorite pass now. Again, from the top, we go with layers of love. Effects, transitions, graphics, animations, composites, heavy sound design... I do it all on these final passes. All the b-roll is tweeked. All legal levels are checked.

This is a very non-linear approach to reality-based editing. I have found it to be a more streamlined approach because this ensures a product could be sent out, should the deadline magicly be cut in half. Spend all your time on graphics and layering as ya go and you just may spend that time on a scene the ends up on the cutting room floor and that is waisted time.
The final shots get the final lovin'.

Multi-Cam Workflow in Adobe Premiere Pro

I've been working with multi-cam PP for a while now and I was just wondering about the workflow that others have adopted. Here is my approach. I'll use the ceremony for an example.

1. I first create a sequence named Ceremony Sync and sync up all of my cameras with their associated audio clips along with any external audio files to the timeline (i.e. iRiver, H2, R-4 etc...)

2. Once I have the entire sequence in sync, I'll then select all of the clips from point "A" to point "Z" that I want to use in my multi-cam sequence/edit. I'll copy those clips to a new sequence named "Ceremony Multi-Cam Sync"

3. I'll then create a 3rd sequence named "Ceremony Multi-Cam Edit" and import my "Multi-Cam Sequence" into this 3rd sequence. I'll then do my multi-cam edit. Once complete, I'll delete all of the audio in track 1 and copy and paste all of my original audio clips from my "Ceremony Sync" sequence and then start fine tuning the edit.

Using Adobe Encore's Playlist and Chapter Playlists

Well I feel like I've been through the ringer trying to learn the proper use of the Play lists and Chapter Play lists inside Adobe's Encore CS2. I'll post what I've learned here in a bit, but first I've got to finish this project. The bottom line is, it's a great function, but It's rather touchy if you don't use it right. Improper use of it will cause Encore to simply crash, and make you think you have bad memory chips or something. You get no warning, it just boom's out. But, when used properly, it works great!

Okay so now that I've got that project completed, I have discovered what the problem is that causes Encore to crash when using chapter play lists. Apparently if you have more than 19 playlists for any given timeline it will crash Encore and freeze up a DVD player when selecting the sub-menu remote control button.

So I decided to use Chapter End Actions to return the viewer to menu selections. However there is a drawback to method also. This is the bottom line ( extracted from this thread ) "IF the chapters do not fade to black, then there will be a noticeable pause at the point where each Chapter End Action is, because the player will freeze up while it reads the cell command & decides if it needs to act upon it or not. So, there is really only one option and that is to set up the Chapter/Scene Selection menus as "Entry Point Only". Otherwise you will either hit the bug, or hit a pause as the player crosses the Cell Command. "

Hi yall! I recently ordered the Total Training Series for the Adobe Creative Productions Studio Premimum . I've been using Premiere for quite a long time now, but decided I wanted to complete a structured course and see if this old dog can learn some new tricks. Come to find out, I DON'T know it all. That's pretty heart settling. So... I thought maybe I would clue you in on the new things I am learning, maybe you can discover something new and let me know!

Play In to Out Button in the Program Monitor has 2 Different functions - I did not know that!

I just learned that the Play in to Out button has 2 functions. In it's normal state, it does just what it says, it will play your timeline from it's in point to it's out point. However, if you pressthe the Alt Key (on a PC) first then hover your mouse over the Play in to Out button you'll see it turnes into a "Play Around" button (the icon even changes as well as the tool tip). The "Play Around" function is used quickly play back your timeline starting from a set amount of preroll seconds to a set amount of postroll from your current play head position. To set the preroll and postroll defaults click on Edit/Preferences/General and it's the first 2 options (postroll and preroll)

I read the following here on VidUni and am wondering if there's no XLR inputs then how do you get sound from a wireless mic with a transmitter and receiver?

Also, if this camera cannot record 24fps then what does it record at and what can you do to get it to look like film besides using software like Magic Bullet etc? Any help please, would be appreciated.

"On the negative side, no XLR inputs or independent audio-level controls. It has no 24P mode so cannot record progressive scan video at the 24 frames per second rate. No B/W optical view finder, although many really like the 3.5" LCD.The manual focus is a bit difficult."

Hi, I'm ready to buy an Mp3 for the following puposes:
-to back up sound at weddings and other events
-for personal use

I want 60GB at least. The Mp3 player needs to have a large storage capacity and a mic-in hole in order to record the vows etc at the church.

-Is there any particular lapel microphone that would go with the particular model(s) you would suggest?

-Where is the best place you've come across when it comes to buying Mp3 players?
-Looking for something around 400Euro (roughly 500 dollars)
-Are there any drawbacks you have ever experienced using an Mp3 player as a back-up device?
-Is iRiver the best there is or are there new and better models out there?

Would appreciate the feedback. Thanks.

When I edit my videos in Final Cut express on my mac and export the video to quicktime, then place it in iDVD, it seems that the finished product on the dvd doesn't look as well as it did on my monitor. I know my computer monitor (from apple) is much higher quality then my t.v. but even when I play the finished dvd on my computer, it doesn't look as well. Is it something about exporting to a quicktime movie that deteriorates my videos or is it that i'm using iDVD? Also my videos usually run about an hour and a half to two hours long. Any help?

Using filters when shooting as opposed to editing

Just a quick question for you people here with more knowledge and experience than I.

For some reason I'm thinking that shooting a film with filters and then maybe doing a little touch up is better than shooting a film or whatever without any filters and then getting the look you want when editing in Final Cut Pro or whatever it is that you use.

Surely adding filters to what you've shot in post production wouldn't be as good as actually shooting the film with real filters.

From your experience, does it really matter or is there a huge difference? If so, what are the differences?

I'd appreciate any feedback on this. Thanks.

Do I have to get a really good high quality VCR to do the transfer or can I use just a consumer VCR. Anybody have any suggestions?
