I usually edit the whole wedding as one project file and then render the first hour (pre-ceremony/ceremony) and the second hour (reception) separately by using the select tool. In the render options, I save type as MAIN CONCEPT MPEG-2 and the template DVD ARCHITECT 24p WIDESCREEN. After this is all complete I simply import into DVD ARCHITECT.

I suggest getting the best glass you can afford at this time. It wouldn't hurt to invest in Canon's premium line - the L lenses - because bodies come and go, but the lenses are there to stay.

As a beginner, you should first purchase the lenses which you can think you will be using more. Here are the usual first purchases:

24-70mm 2.8L
70-200mm 2.8L
50mm 1.8 (nice and cheap)
and perhaps a 10-20mm for extreme wides

AS your skill set develops, you know can graduate and appreciate the prime lenses with very large openings (50mm 1.2, 85mm 1.2 etc).

hope this helps.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I definitely agree with buying the 50mm f/1.8, I use that the most when getting shallow depth of field shots which everyone loves.

It's seriously a steal, but be careful because it can dent easy: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/...l_EF_50mm_f_1_8.html

You can achieve that photo montage by using after effects or final cut pro. However, it may take a few tutorials to understand it completely. If you have a Mac, I find that iphoto has many templates to choose from, which will make things quick and easy.

Let us know about the glass you are selling from the Canon days. As long as they aren't FD mounts they work great for video on our DSLRs since we have to use manual modes anyway. Many of us here would be interested in the glass so give us a shot at it before dumping it on eBay. Then you know it all goes to happy homes.

I think I remember that discussion you mentioned a few years back. I wouldn't care if it really did turn into that full bore. I remembered one person mentioning the day may be coming where a team is hired to cover photo/video almost like a movie with a director calling the shots. I wouldn't care if I was part of that team covering video as long as I was making good money doing what I like. It would be the same but we would just have better tools. The day is still not here where we can just shoot video footage and take those super high rez stills from the footage. We are still limited to 1920x1080 stills directly from footage. We can take a still with a DSLR while shooting video but we get a momentary pause in our video so it is not always a good thing. Even if we had a Red camera and could grab stills from it in max resolution they would still be smaller than todays 18-25mp still cams. We are alot closer and heading the direction of your prediction but not quite there yet.

Hows business in the rocket science world. Good to see you around and still kicking.

Doug, great to hear from you again.

Remember to take a look at those old manual lenses that your fatehr in law might have had.

As you could purchase adapters for those old manual lenses and apply them to a new DSLR like the 60D. Great for video production and could save you a ton of money on glass.

I'm so glad I've stayed out of the camera/camcorder market for a couple of years. There are so many changes!
Now I'm looking (and drooling a little) over the EOS-60D.

Does anyone remember back about ten years ago? I said that someday we would all be "image professionals" and use a device that was a combination still camera/video camera. At the time, I was told by a professional, who worked for the video camera arm of a major manufacturer, that it would never happen. He even went into a lot of technical detail about sensors, etc.

Well...I told you so. :)

By the way, I have just been saddled with the job of selling about six BOXES of still photo gear that belonged to my late father-in-law. He was a Canon aficionado and bought tons of their cameras and accessories. No digital gear, this is all 35mm film equipment. Look for a continuing series of auctions on eBay...or maybe I should set up a Store.

Doug Graham

Although in SoCal, it seems that everybody is getting into the photo booth biz. How are you doing at standing out in a crowded field?

I'm doing goggle adwords, doing some free events around town, getting involved with local business networking groups, putting a local ad in community magazines. I'm doing OK considering my booth is already paid for and I might be buying my 2nd one soon. I just hope this Photo Booth stuff doesn't fade off like the Chocolate fountain will.
But I love it! So much fun and the photos are hilarious.

An upgrade from a previous version of Vegas is $235 direct from Sony.
Buying the full version with DVDA from videoguys is about $600.

The biggest advantages of Pro over the consumer version are:

unlimited A/V tracks
more fx
videoscopes
protype titler
xdcam support
gigapixel image support
4K project support (RED)
broadcast wave support
(other TV / broadcast stuff in 9d)
tons more pro audio recording stuff
envelopes
project nesting
SCRIPTING

Only you can determine which one is right for you. Do you need most of that stuff for "wedding video"? Maybe not.

I haven't tried shooting a wedding with Motion JPG. It will only do 720/30p in that mode, and has a 2gb recording limit. Probably a good setting if you were shooting video for a quick YouTube broadcast or something, and were going for faster/simpler post-production over a more cinematic look.

if I were new to this business, and was only going to be doing weddings, I probably wouldn't bother spending all the money on a pro NLE. I downloaded the consumer version of Vegas to my laptop, and it's just like the pro version.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

It's kind of hard to understand why the consumer versions are
like $40 to $70 and the Pro version is like $600. I took a
quick look at a comparison chart and the main thing that I noticed
is that only the Pro version has videoscopes. Now, I've kind of
gotten use to using the vectorscope and histogram so I think I
would miss it to do without.

Maybe I need to check out this Neoscene and see if it will do what
I want and allow me to keep working with my current Vegas.
So how easy is it to use Neoscene? Steep learning curve?

And what is this "transcoding" that I keep hearing about? You're
basically just converting media from a format that bogs down
your computer to one that doesn't? Is there any loss in quality
if you don't edit working with the native files?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, these big companies aren't stupid when it comes to a bit of software code that means the difference in whether it's "pro" or "consumer". The GH1 is also a good example...it's a consumer camera so they put a weak codec in it and sell it for $1200...and now they're releasing the AF100...which is probably essentially the same thing with a professional codec...and charge an additional $5000.

Transcoding AVC to Cineform AVI with Neoscene is super simple...just tell it which files to convert, where to put them, and it renders them all pretty quickly. And it also gives you the option to remove pulldown (required for the GH1, for example) to convert 60i back into 24p.

As for quality loss, I'd guess working with Cineform AVI really helps to maintain quality while editing/rendering. Actually, I think the footage looks BETTER after Neoscene, even when it doesn't require a pulldown. (GH1 1080 looks bad if you don't remove the pulldown.)

if I were new to this business, and was only going to be doing weddings, I probably wouldn't bother spending all the money on a pro NLE.

"For weddings people want a rose tinted record of what it really was and this is much easier with stills so I can't see video ever being in the driving seat here." - photog -

"I personally can't stand the video dslr set ups these days ... way too much - too static and just in everyone's way - mine, priest, and guests. The whole issue of them not having auto focus - makes it necessary for them to do rehearsal shots - and that takes up so much time." - photog -

"A photograph helps you remember an event in the manner you want to remember the event.
Video makes you remember an event how it actually happened... good or bad." - photog -
